3 out of 5 eggsGreat sound marred by low quality manufacturing & menus

Pros: The AVR sounds great, hooked up to four Polk Monitor 55's.
It has a good amount of HDMI and optical inputs, as well as inputs for older devices.
Good configuration options despite the horrible UI (such as individual speaker levels, low frequency crossover, default name & volumes for inputs, etc).

Cons: The top negative is that the front display just up and stopped working 6 months after purchase.

They really didn't put a lot of thought into usability. The menus are outdated, as others have noted, and are clunky to navigate.

Switching between inputs is iffy. I had to program a macro to get the right combination of buttons just to turn on the DVD, Amp and TV, and to have correct audio & video channels. This kind of operation is a lot easier on a friend's Yamaha AVR.

No HDMI passthrough.

Other Thoughts: It's such a shame that a good sounding AVR is brought low by poor manufacturing & subpar return policies.

As another reviewer mentioned, I'm not happy that I have to pay to ship a defective product back for an exchange. Also not happy that I'm without any amp while mine is shipped, they take a few days to check it over, and then while the new one is shipped to me. Other companies will ship you a new unit as soon as they issue an RMA. You can return the defective one when you receive the new one.

Customer service is located in India. While they have much higher
English comprehension than other Indian call centers I've spoken to, there is still an obvious language / comprehension barrier. I'll give their staff props for being friendly & genuinely trying to understand what's going on rather than just reciting a script.

Responses are very slow over email & from the web exchange form (days).

As others noted, the only instructions included are the "Quick Setup Guide" which is pretty useless. Since I have a smartphone, I was able to bring up the full user guide in PDF while I configured it, but there are plenty of people who can't read an online doc in the living room, and others who don't have printers as well. Also, the Quick Guide has something like 4 or 5 languages in it. Rather than waste printing costs on a guide where 4/5 of the print is useless or redundant, why not just include the full printed User Guide in one language? Include the language the customer requests or at least the one dominant in their area.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome entry level receiver

Pros: Price.
Outstanding sound quality.
Design and looks.
Inputs/outputs and features.
Ease of setup.

Cons: Front USB port is only for firmware updates. You can't use it for device connectivity.
No WiFi/network connectivity.
Size - it's bigger than expected.

Other Thoughts: Got this baby for $149 at Black Friday sale with rebate. Best bang for the buck at this level. I knew what I was getting into so the cons were not that disappointing. The only draw back was the size. It's a bit higher than expected and it could not fit in my stand. Had to do some customization to get it in there. I'm very impressed with the sound quality of this unit. I have an old and poor 5.1 speakers and they sound great with this unit. The low quality Pandora from the TV now sounds awesome. I'd recommend this receiver without a doubt! Probably would have gave it 4 eggs if I bought it at the regular price though because it is a basic entry level receiver...

1 out of 5 eggsShoddy Product

Pros: Black is a nice color, I guess.

Cons: Unfortunately the thing died after the first week. It was just fine then suddenly stopped accepting either component or HDMI input.

2 out of 5 eggsHas its Problems

Pros: Price

Cons: Poor sound and Picture quality

Other Thoughts: I purchased this receiver on sale for under $200 so I wasn't expecting much. It has a lot of good features but not all of them work very well. When switching between HDMI ports you have to restart several times before it works. When watching television the picture will get bright and then dims. When the receiver works properly it's a great product problem is it hardly ever works properly. I'll be looking for a new receiver soon. The old adage "you get what you pay for" is correct when it comes to this receiver. I'm disappointed because I use to think highly of Harman/Kardon products.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat entry level receiver

Pros: Great price, easy setup, clean style. Sound is excellent. I have it powering Klipsch F10 Floorstanding speakers with a Polk SW10 Subwoofer and it sounds amazing.

Cons: Remote isn't anything to brag about. No programming codes for Hisense televisions.

Other Thoughts: All in all great purchase for my entry level home theater. All the features I needed. Got it on sale, couldn't be happier.

2 out of 5 eggsSounded good.. Mostly

Pros: Nice outputs, features and inputs, sounds really good with my Polk monitor 70s with one exception.

Cons: The front left channel crackles at all volume levels, all other channels work fine. Now I have to pay an extra $30 to return a defective product.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure why I need to foot the bill for receiving a defective product, and have to be without a receiver until they receive it and send another. Hopefully that one isn't defective as we'll.

4 out of 5 eggsdecent for sub $200

Pros: warm sound, nice cosmetics, easy setup

Cons: true wattage sounds more like 5x20 or 2x35w, good receiver for bookshelfs of a 5.1 in a box, limited power becomes obvious if connected to towers

Other Thoughts: not a bad choice for under $200 if you don't need a network receiver. would probably have spend a few dollars more on the avr1650 if i had to do it over

5 out of 5 eggsOwner

Pros: Once tweaked in. 5 star. You will feel the sound with this one. It'll put pressure on your eardrums. The sub-woffer when distance is at 30' (max setting), the neighbors know I'm home when I crank it up. It's overpowering with my MartinLogan MLT-2 5.1 CH Premium Home Theater Speaker System Black System. Too much sound pressure is ok with me. The floors shake, etc.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: 5 star power output.
