1 out of 5 eggsReminds me why I don't buy refurbished

Pros: None

Cons: I don't usually buy refurbished items, but the price was low enough to convince me that it might be worth it. I just wanted a simple radio to put in the garage. I figured I'd buy two since they were cheap, and if one didn't work, not a huge loss.

NEITHER radio worked. In fact, one was completely missing a knob (no, it wasn't in the bottom of the box.) When it was turned on, it blasted static at full volume regardless of the setting of the volume control nob, the AM/FM/Weather switch, or the tuning knob. The other one worked for about 2 minutes, then ceased to work entirely.

It's obvious that the quality control on the refurbishing process for these is either lacking, or non-existent. I have a feeling that they got them back from somewhere and put them in an OEM box without even testing them.

Other Thoughts: These were too cheap to make them worth sending back. The only plus was that I was able to pull an antenna off of one of them to put on one of the kids radios that had a broken antenna.

This was a relatively inexpensive reminder to me to avoid buying refurbished items. I've had more trouble with reburbs than the cost savings is worth.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks for my use, Not the greatest.

Pros: Has analog on/off switch and manual tuner.

Cons: Tuner is very touchy. Poor reception

Other Thoughts: I purchased at the "W" store for $20 new. They work okay. I use these during the holidays to broadcast music outside to my light display. They are on a timer that comes on and turns off, that was the reason I selected these radios. Some digital units will not turn on without manually switching the power button.

1 out of 5 eggs"Refurbished" turns out to be still broken

Pros: N/A - read "Cons" section to see why I cannot give any pros.

Cons: This used product didn't quite make it through the refurbishing process. Maybe it slipped through the cracks. Radio unable to find a single broadcasting station. All I hear is a steady static. The most annoying part is that once you flick the switch to "OFF", the sound of static gets much louder, which makes no sense. Nothing works.

Other Thoughts: I must admit that I hadn't tested this "refurbished" product right away. In fact, it sat on my desk for 4 months before I made the time to test it. But sitting on a desk unused for 4 months shouldn't render a product useless, refurbished or not.

1 out of 5 eggsSkip this one

Pros: Bought it to put in my office. Came on when plugged in. That's as nice as I can be!

Cons: Pitiful reception on FM- just a tiny touch on knob made huge changes. If you hit the WX button it blasts at max volume. Tuning indicator was useless. I went to the "W" store and bought a $9.95 clock radio which worked way better. If anyone wants the Emerson junk, I'll give you mine for cost of postage!

Other Thoughts: win some, lose some.... first time I've ever made a negative review on Newegg!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Refurb

Pros: Got it for free with a rebate. Shipping was free and Newegg fast. Great product as a rebate. No dents or dings and works like new. Good volume.

Cons: Doesn't pick AM up as well in my office and I'm pretty near a window. I don't want to say it's my building as I was able to pick up AM bands fairly well with my old radio. Picks up most FM stations just fine.

Other Thoughts: Decent radio to have at the office especially at the price.

2 out of 5 eggsAt least mine works

Pros: Cheap/nearly free after rebate. After a few hours, FM still works and hasn't blown up. Clock and backlight luckily work on mine.

Cons: Major con is I didn't extend the antenna until recently and found the top section had a burn/heat mark and a nice chunk missing out of it and blackened on the inside. No idea how it happened, but possibly the previous owner let it touch an AC prong. Basic radio still seems to work w/ normal reception so only negative is exposed sharp-ish metal in case kids decide to touch it when fully exposed.

The weather feature as mentioned in the other reviews is seriously lacking.
Even after rear knob adjustment, it barely tunes anything audible even in a major metro area. Pushing the weather button when the radio is off is an unpleasant experience and the way it reads in the manual and warning tag affixed to the unit doesn't really tell the story of full volume static if the power switch is in the off position. Maybe good as a trick radio for your parents, etc.

My guess is they had a 90% return rate due to the terrible weather feature and performance, so someone at Emerson got fired and now everyone good w/ rebates is benefitting as long as we have very low expectations.

Again, as a basic FM radio for background noise, it's doing it's job but if they even "refurb" at all, I'm sure they should have caught the fact that the antenna was missing a chunk and should have been replaced before resale.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes exactly what it's supposed to do.

Pros: Plays FM, AM, and weather band. Weather report is instantly available by pushing one big button even if radio power switch is turned off

Cons: Radio is basic quality, nothing special. You need to read and follow the directions compulsively. The radio arrived with its weather button pushed, and in this mode it only does weather. Furthermore, the weather radio has its own special black dial on its black back (hard to see) which must first be tuned separately to get a signal.

Other Thoughts: Either inadequate instructions were included, buyers didn't follow them, or some were defective causing problems reported by others. For me, it worked exactly as it should. Previous refurbished products sold by arrived DOA. Howeer, with the final cost being one postage stamp, I decided to risk it again. This time, it worked out.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat emergency radio

Pros: This is all you need to know. There is a button on the top of the radio that you push in. It clicks. When it is in, you get the local weather report, live, anytime. Simple and reliable. You could activate this in the dark.

You can tune into AM/FM like any normal radio as well. To that effect the radio works fine. Nothing special. But for an emergency radio that uses AA batteries this thing is super simple and just works.

Cons: If you do want to use this to actually listen to music and such, it doesn't sound the greatest. But that isn't really the purpose this is marketed towards.
