Don't have room for five speakers and a floor-thumper? Convinced that you have only two ears for a reason? Bought a new home and you're broke? Sherwood makes a nice 100W per channel stereo receiver that should meet your needs nicely.

Remote control, sleep setting, preset scanner, and 30 station presets make this AM/FM stereo receiver easy to use, as does the fact you don't need enough speakers to fill the spots of two people to run it. Has all the essentials you normally need: bass/treble controls, quartz phase-locked loop tuning with digital synthesis to grab and hold your stations (without using a lockerful of crystals), and switching for another pair of speakers in another room. Expandable without being expensive.

This is a great main amp for the beginning audio enthusiast, or a solid subamplifier for serious sound tweakers.

  • newegg Phenomenal Sound Quality Rated at 100 watts per channel, the Sherwood RX-4105 significantly reduces distortion to less than 0.20% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz for phenomenal sound quality as it was meant to be.
  • newegg Remote Control The Sherwood RX-4105 features the ability to independently select up to two sets of loudspeakers via the supplied remote control. This relay-controlled switching puts the speakers in parallel, maintaining their individual sound qualities.

1 out of 5 eggsdon't do it!

Pros: nothing

Cons: Receiver just up & died after only 18 months. Went on line to see if anyone else had this problem, and found several others that had theirs die about the same time limit. Was playing it, and it just all the sudden more sound.

3 out of 5 eggsCheep and clean, but....

Pros: Clean, low distortion power for my small living room. Seems to run really cool. Initial impression is that this is a great bargain.

Cons: Tone and separation not controllable from the remote.

D'ya know that inevitable disclaimer: "specifications subject to change without notice"? Well compare some of the FM specs in the manual to those on the Newegg and Sherwood websites:

S/N: 55dB (vs. 68)
Stereo Separation: 25 dB (vs. 35)
IF rejection 65 dB (vs. 80)

Not a good trend!

1 out of 5 eggsDecent while it lasted

Pros: Cheap, good customer service

Cons: Didn't last long

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit and hooked it up to four 8 ohm speakers. It worked well for several months. It didn't sound bad for a cheap receiver. After several month, it failed to power-up. It was well past the return period but I contacted Sherwood customer support and they suggested I return it and they would repair it. I sent it back and to my surpise, they sent me a new (possibly re-furbished unit) unfortunately it failed after a couple of months. I considered sending it back but I realized with the cost of shipping, I might be thowing good money away. I decided to suck it up and buy a decent receiver instead

1 out of 5 eggsBroke after 4 months

Pros: This was cheap. It worked for a while.

Cons: All front panel controls failed after less than four months of light use. The display still lights up, but no controls will work, either the remote or the onboard controls. It is frozen in the power on mode, with the volume stuck at where it was last used.

Other Thoughts: Since there is only a 30 day RMA, and after that you have to go through the manufacturer, avoid this "deal." I expect lots of downtime as I ship it off to some service center and then wait for it to be fixed and returned. Not worth it considering this takes down our entire entertainment system. Spend some more to get something durable.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked Well while it lasted

Pros: Worked well with my Polk Audio Studio 70's most of the time. At times, the sound would go out and the thing would power down. Its seemed to push my Studio 70's quite decently.

Cons: I bought this in November and the right audio channel is now blown and it's only January. Not even three months for a hundred bucks. Sherwood's support website doesn't even pull up for this model anymore.

Other Thoughts: I didn't love the thing, but I was happy that it worked. NOw that it doesn't work I hate many things about it. Turned off on its own, no HDMI, kind of ugly, and lasts less than 3 months.

5 out of 5 eggsRX-4105

Pros: Does what it's supposed to do. Have it hooked up to an old Cre@tive 5.1 which seems to work pretty well.

Cons: The main reason I'm using it is to sync up am/fm radio with football and baseball games. The antennas that come with it for both am and fm aren't that good a quality, but then again nothing you get that's stock is ever good.

Other Thoughts: Going to make a new antenna for the system, which then I'll have no problem. Kinda fun making them too.

1 out of 5 eggsLeft channel blown.

Pros: Cheap and worked for a little while.

Cons: LEFT CHANNEL BLEW OUT!! I bought this thing as a cheap replacement for my JVC reciever that I play my drums to. I have large speakers and need to turn them up (around 48 on this thing) so I can hear the music I am playing to. I used this thing about 10 times in about 3 months and noticed the left channel is out. Good luck trying to find a repair center too, go to the Sherwood website and all it gives you is a listing of repair places in just about every state BUT the one I live in. Called the nearest one in the next state and the number is out of service.

Other Thoughts: I know this thing was cheap, but I do expect A LOT longer life than 3 months with VERY LITTLE USE! Very disappointed in this receiver, did not want to spend the extra $100 or so for the a better receiver since all I do is play my drums to it, wish I did now since this thing is a big paper weight now. Spend the extra money, this thing is VERY cheaply built and will not last the 25 years that my JVC did.

2 out of 5 eggsDidn't last

Pros: Worked well while it lasted. We just use it for parties in our basement so didn't really need anything special.

Cons: Lasted less than 2 years. The front panel went wacky and pushing buttons would just do random things, like pushing the power button would switch the source. We used it like this for a while, using the remote as much as possible. Now the left channel blew out so it's useless.

Other Thoughts: For the price i guess I can't really complain. Since it was used for parties, the volume was always cranked. That could be why it had such a short life. Probably going to pick up the cheap Sony receiver to replace this one.
