Sangean FM-Stereo/AM PLL Synthesized Pocket Radio

Simple quality, simple to use functions, and simply great design. Keep up-to-date on the latest news, weather, traffic, sports scores, & much much more with this ultra-portable pocket radio from Sangean.

Weighing a mere 3.9 ounces, the DT-210 is a small PLL-synthesized AM/FM stereo radio - small enough to fit in a shirt or jacket pocket and powerful enough to pull in those distant AM/FM stations. A built-in speaker affords headphones-free listening, and 90-minute auto shut-off lets you fall asleep to the radio without fear of waking up to dead batteries. With Phase Loop Lock Digital Tuning and Sangean's traditional radio sensitivity, built-in speaker and included ear buds, you will be able to enjoy your morning jog, your short trip to the beach or other outing without missing your favorite AM/FM station if you have the DT-210 pocket radio. You get 25 memory presets (and auto scan) to help you zip right to preferred stations.

The radio comes with stereo ear buds and a removable belt clip, as well as a trailing antenna. DBB (Deep Bass Boost) enhances the sonic low end, while a stereo-mono switch improves reception when needed. Measuring a mere 1.5 x 3 x 0.6 inches, the unit runs on two AAA batteries (not included). A low-battery indicator offers a helpful hint on when it's wise to carry replacements.

4 out of 5 eggsVEry nice w/irritating flaw

Pros: Comfortable size
Sleek appearance
Excellent sound with headphones in FM band
Quite a few presets in AM and FM
Good lock function
Pocket clip
Excellent reception
Digital tuning

Cons: Bass boost
Station recall

Other Thoughts: I use this radio only occasionally, and so far have had no problems with it, even though it once fell over a foot onto concrete. My biggest issue with it is preset station scanning. I often want to sample a station for awhile before moving on to the next favorite, but once in scanning mode (by pressing the “Recall” button) it gives you only seven seconds before locking onto the current selection. I end up having to frequently press the recall button to continue the search; manual cancellation, or more time, would be more efficient and less irritating. The only other issue I have is with the bass boost, which is very deep—uncomfortably so with some music when using headphones. The standard bass is decent and pretty much the only time I use the DBB (Double Bass Boost) is with classical music. If it were 40% less, I think it would work well with most all music.
On the up side, the radio has excellent reception and sound in FM, but I don’t really use AM much so won’t comment on that. The DT-210 has 15 FM and 10 AM presets, which are plenty for me. The “lock” prevents the radio from being turned on accidentally and running down the batteries in a drawer, and also can lock it on a current station to prevent an accidental frequency change. And of course, digital tuning is da bomb.

2 out of 5 eggsSangean DT-210

Pros: Easy to tune using the PLL. Easy to install batteries. Light. Small size.

Cons: Does not have internal FM antenna. Need to plug in furnished antenna. Poor reception on AM for distances greater than 30 miles. Ditto for FM stations

Other Thoughts: Radio has limited usefulness due to features listed.

3 out of 5 eggsOverrated

Pros: Large and well reviewed

Cons: This unit although nicely designed, is much larger than the Sansa player I was previously using. In fact the 2 AAA batteries alone are larger than my previous player. Unfortunately it doesn't perform better in any way, and I think most portable receivers in mp3 players will perform as well if not better for lots less cost. For those needing AM capability the DT-210 is even more disappointing. The unit's receiving capabilities are no where close to pervious Sangean table or shower radios I have used, and don't come close to Tivoli or the much reviewed GE/RCA Superadio. I think this model has been value engineered out of its outstanding status,

Other Thoughts: I was intrigued by the reviews of the previous version of the Sangean Pocket Radio FM/AM DT-210 and the need to have a portable radio perform as well as a car radio. I walk in an area 20-30 miles from my stations of interest, and have had lots of reception issues with previous portable mp3 devices with radio receivers; lots of fading and directional issues etc.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little radio

Pros: AMAZING reception from a tiny little radio. Perfect for running and listening to my local radio stations AND the big ones up in Atlanta. As good if not better reception than most cars.

Cons: Can't think of any. A rechargeable lithium battery would be nice, but the AAA's certainly last long enough.
