4 out of 5 eggsAbove average but not spectacular

Pros: Black in color, been waiting for an option other than white. AM sensitivity above average especially during day time due to the large ferrite bar antenna. AM selectivity is good but nothing out of the ordinary. FM performance and sound quality equivalent to "chique" radios costing much more. RDS works as it should and the same as any other Sangean I've owned. Automatic gain control circuit on AM is nearly perfect, even better then my ATS-909 and produces a more pleasant and listenable signal during quick fading in/out. It appears to not drain batteries very fast. Build quality is OK. It has AUX in if you want to use it as a quick set of speakers. Got mine for $59.99 with free shipping after $10 promo code.

Cons: Front control buttons are funky and have an overly predominant cheap feeling to them. They remind me of dragées glued to springs (Google it). Switching between 9 and 10 kHz tuning steps on AM instantly wipes any memories you may have programmed. AM audio sounds a bit hollow to my ears; a tone control would've been a great addition. Although I prefer the black color it's a fingerprint magnet out of the box. The MSRP of $99 is grossly overpriced as is $70. I think $50 or somewhere there about is more fair.

Other Thoughts: I’ve probably owned nearly 100 radios in my lifetime ranging from Sony, Panasonic, Zenith, Sangean, Drake and Grundig. All of them have had their strengths and weaknesses in terms of AM performance. The problem with supposed ‘great” radios of today is a lot of newcomers don’t have anything to compare it to, other than maybe another cheap Chinese radio. The PR-D5 is an excellent choice for hard-core AM/FM listeners. I’d say it’s very close to any high performance radio made in the 1980’s and I’d certainly give it consideration if you’re looking for a more affordable option over Tivoli or CCrane.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Radio

Pros: Very sensitive, selective am, above average fm.
Solid, well built look and feel.
Big sound from the two small speakers. No distortion when cranking it up on fm. It sounds good.
The Cords feature is nice. It identifies the song, station and you can set the clock accurately too.

Cons: More favorite saves wouldn't hurt. Five on am and five on fm is standard.
A handle/strap would be be a nice addition.

Other Thoughts: I got it less than three days after ordering it through Newegg. Everything works as advertised.
The new black color looks great.
I have about a dozen or so of various radios including Sony 7600GR, Tecsuns, Grundigs etc. This is my first Sangean and won't be my last. It's uncomplicated and is fun to listen to.
I recommended it.
