4 out of 5 eggsGood upgrade from nuvi 205

Pros: Large screen
Bright screen
Clear voice directions
Split screen at major intersections

Cons: Battery live can be a bit longer
Screen sometimes is slow to refresh
Question it's logic on the routes is sends me on.
Touchpad doesn't always work on the first try.

Other Thoughts: After reading all the reviews, I was a bit worried when I got the nuvi 40LM as a gift.
But after a test run home & a trip to Baltimore, MD, it got my to the desired destination without any major problems.
Good GPS for the first time buyer, or someone looking for an easy to use model.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother Disappointment

Pros: If you never care about updating this product, you'll be alright.

Cons: Another failed update, I purchase the Nuvi40LM because after updating the firmware in my Nuvi1490 I was unable to update the maps. After this purchase, I updated the firmware on the 40LM and then the 2.6GB map software with a message that update completed successful, not so, the message on the nuvi40LM when attempting to use was no map data available. This was my third nuvi and updates to firmware and maps has always been time consuming and not reliable.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Ever - Do Not Buy

Pros: NONE - Oh - cute little voices and icons you can download.

Cons: Major flaw in routing. Takes off major safe highways onto dangerous rural roads and mountain passes. Refuses to stay on major highways.
Has choices for shortest time, or shortest distance, (off-road ???). Has no option for most use of highways (like another well known brand).
My family has been taken on dangerous routes. We got to where we had to check maps first, then only use the Garmin in the last few miles or blocks as it has serious problems over long distances.

Other Thoughts: Have spoken with tech support numerous times. The Garmins we purchased always trying to get us to exit and takes us on less traveled often impassable back roads. Or slow moving side streets.
Ultimately increasing the time or danger levels. If you are a delivery driver working in your own small neighborhood then this might work. And poorly at that. Long distance or to unfamiliar places - NO WAY.

3 out of 5 eggsinformation incorrect

Pros: Its a gps and its low cost

Cons: Newegg lists this gps as including both maps for the US and Canada but later in the spec section say its only the US version.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't update

Pros: Like my nuvi before it, it navigates great and is easy to use...that's why I bought another one.

Cons: I paid close attention to making sure I got lifetime maps too...except when I try to update it, it errors out every time. I'm no genius, but I work in IT so I know what I'm doing with this stuff

Other Thoughts: Anyone else have this issue?

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The device itself works as expected.

Cons: In this day and age, the map update software is an absolute joke. Maps appear to be multiple gigabytes in size, but I can't really be sure because it doesn't display the download size or speed. All I know is that I allowed it to download for 8 hours overnight and still wasn't finished in the morning. Since I had other important things to do and couldn't have it slowing my connection down, I paused the download (with the button clearly labeled "Pause") only to discover later that pausing actually cancelled the whole thing and now it's started over from the very beginning. It's 2012, for Pete's sake. Surely the Garmin programmers can make a decent downloader with proper pause/resume support.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I love the Garmin I recently purchased from Newegg. Not only I got a great deal on the price, the Nuvi 40LM was better than I expected. It's has some of the features that Tom Tom has for example when coming to a major inter section the screen splits; It shows the route which is on the left side and on the right it shows exactly which lane to be in to keep straight or turn on.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsRead small print: No Canada maps

Pros: It works. Resonably friently interface. Maps are Ok.

Cons: - Canada maps are not included. There are 2 versions of this device, and this is US only maps.
- The touch and drag to move map is annoying: device is slow to react and frequently registers just "touch" instead of "drag". Got to slow down and press rather firmly. Annoyng when you also own tablet/smartphone and are used to nice screen sensitivity. And no multitrouch of course.

Other Thoughts: When I have data connection, I prefer Google Maps on my smartphone for navigation. This is just a backup.
