5 out of 5 eggsSecure and stable connection w/VPN

Pros: I bought this router primarily to secure my network through a VPN service provider, not for site-to-site although I hear that it works fine. The other thing about this router is that it has network protection, detection, and defense settings, in particular against ARP spoof and DoS attacks, a main concern of mine.

Cons: With my VPN service provider, I am not allowed to connect at anything greater than simple PPTP, which is reasonably secure but not terribly sophisticated either. I can't really blame this router for that though; I guess it all depends on what your VPN provider you use.

Other Thoughts: This product only came with a cat5 cable (no surprise there) but you need at least cat5e or better to get gigabit speeds on your LAN. The WLAN signal strength is really good at this price, two large antennas; I'd rather have a strong connection to my devices than faster internet speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works fine!

Pros: No cons at all! Plug and update the firmware! No drops what so ever!
Re config it and it's holding out just fine. Solid and heavy and not a cheap product. Want the best then get the best! want something that will break buy a router for $20 bucks then.

Cons: None. It's fine! Just update the firmware and sit back and Re config it

Other Thoughts: YUP! when you get the product just update the firmware First! plug the Ethernet cord in the computer and type the ip address of the router and update! Be careful not to unplug the router when updating it as you will brick it! when it's just wait 1 min or 2 before you power it off and back

1 out of 5 eggsVPN Doesn't allow same subnet

Pros: Can't list any pros yet since I bought this exclusively for VPN functionality and VPN is not working.

Cons: I've used Linksys/Cisco VPN routers for years and thought I'd give this TP-Link one a try. Bad move. I should have gone with the tried and true.

The problem: The PPTP/L2TP VPN server forces you to use a different subnet for VPN clients which means even if you can connect to your remote LAN over VPN you can't access devices on the remote LAN.

This limitation is written up in numerous TP-Link forums and other reseller reviews and some people have made it work by editing routing tables and assigning static routes on the client (windows) but that doesn't work if you want to connect to this using devices such as phones or tablets.

So far no official answers from TP-Link that I can find. I also opened a support case with TP-Link and haven't heard back. I will update this review if/when I do hear from them.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to review our Router.

The majority of VPN connections will make you use two different non conflicting subnets - this is usually to prevent conflicts among the two LANs.

Even though you are on two different subnets you can still access the remote devices. There may be some issues with access shared folders as they use DNS to traverse the VPN, but this is still possible with more configuration on the VPN.

Creating Static Routes will not be necessary and the Routers will be smart enought to route from Lan to Lan.

Here is a a FAQ for more information on creating a PPTP connection: http://www.tp-link.us/article/?faqid=411

If you have any issues then feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Tech support ever!

Pros: Works sometimes!

Cons: I am a CCNA, I have configured many VPN routers, from Cisco, and Netgear. I decided to give TP-Link a try because of my client's budget, but the VPN does not work. I tried calling tech support several times, but the people who answer the phones, have no idea how to configure the router! Most times, no one even answers the calls. Stay away!

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: It just works

Cons: Load Balancing is not perfect, but I amy not have the settings right yet
No good way to monitor throughput

Other Thoughts: I have never rebooted the router in over a month, I have 2 low quality internet conncections, and this router keeps me connected 97% of the time. I occasionally have to refresh a page when one connection drops, or lags, but it is working.

I would like more control over the load balancing, and more info on the data sent through easch wan port, but so far it is working as advertised.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Router Ever

Pros: I installed this router 4 months ago and I haven't had to reset it once. Quelled all the complaints from my family that the wireless was slow or not working.

Cons: A little difficult to configure the software. The basic stuff was easy but setting up port forwarding was a little cryptic

Other Thoughts: I own a IT consulting business. I will be buying these routers from now on for my clients.

1 out of 5 eggsFake gigabit router

Pros: It looks pretty.

Cons: When you buy a gigabit router, that means that router can get up to 1Gbit from the LAN to the WAN, as well as all plugs (WAN and LAN) are 1Gbit. This router is not. It is capped to 125Mbit. This is roughly 10% of your available bandwidth. Tested on Cat6 cables. The firmware the router came with is the only one available for the router on the TP-Link website.

To warn anyone who is looking out for gigabit routers ... if the throughput/traffic between the WAN/LAN is not 1Gbit, then it's a fake gigabit router. Unfortunately, this weeds out the majority of the "gigabit" routers on the market,

Other Thoughts: I hate false advertising companies.

4 out of 5 eggsGood router

Pros: lots of features; easy configuration; running fast

5 out of 5 eggsJust Sayin'

Pros: Easy to configure. Bought to support a family member to provide help via VPN.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I had the head scratcher with Verizon not connecting via DHCP. Saw a note on the net that if you do not release the DHCP connection with the prior router, it will take several hours to provide the new router with an IP address.
