1 out of 5 eggsDead, like Samsung service

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast when it worked.

Cons: Died in just under a year. Locked up computer / won't POST.

Other Thoughts: After registering the failed unit, ALL of the Samsung support functions stopped working, the screen just froze every time I attempted to contact service or send an email for support.

The warranty is useless if you can't contact the manufacturer for service or warranty support.

The Samsung support for SSD seems to be separate from the rest of the Samsung products. Can't even chat with a rep. Speaks poorly of how Samsung feels toward their SSDs.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor, poor support, lousy performance

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Reasonably priced when on sale. It has no moving parts (like all SSDs).

Cons: the support is non-existent. Never answers the phone, can't chat for SSD support and their website offers no support on this model. You select it and what is renders is NOTHING.

Performance stinks. I can't get help to see if it is a defective device. Gave up trying. Shame on Samsung. Shame on me for not being determined enough to get through somehow.

Other Thoughts: Installed in a T500 laptop, this SSD has very mediocre performance, not much better than a HD in many cases. I have a Crucial M4 in a desktop that runs CIRCLES around this product. Granted, it has a Sata 3 interface on the desktop, but it is not even close. AS SSD benchmarks show how lame it is.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdated review with 4 months use

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It still reads pretty quick. I think it's biggest feature that gives it an edge over other brands is the SMART support but you have to use Samsung Magician to get the SMART statistics.

Cons: The sustained and random write speeds have completely tailed off. That's a bit of an understatement to be fair. When I first got this SSD, the sustained write was hovering around 235 MB/s while the random write was about 57000 IOPS. Now after 4 months of use (a couple of complete wipes and re-installs of Win 7 due to some upgrades), the sustained write is 135 MB/s and random write is 11100 IOPS. I also due run between 80-90% capacity all the time though. It seems like the closer it runs to 100% capacity, the more the performance tails off on write speeds.

Other Thoughts: Overall it seems to be hanging in there quite a bit. I wasn't expecting write performance to take such a hit but at the end of the day, this is a boot and game drive for a pure gaming rig, write speeds don't need to be real high. When it comes to booting up and running games, read speeds is what matters the most and the read performance has decreased a little but the bulk of it is still there. Massive thumbs up for that. I was thinking about getting another soon to put into RAID 0 but if prices still remain high for an older product then I'll probably get a 840 Evo. I'm still going RAID 0 because I would like the extra capacity. Also I was planning on writing a updated review after 1 years of use.

1 out of 5 eggsSamsung 840 Series 2.5" 250GB Sata III SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - SSD speeds, While it Lasted.
- Data Migration Software CD Included.

Cons: - Failed 24 Hours after Finishing Installation.
- Totally Non-Recoverable Data Loss.
- Wasted 14 Hours of Tech Time.

Other Thoughts: I had just finished doing an install in a Lenovo TS140 Thinkserver. The server was Loaded with Windows 7 Pro and all the Software to make the clients Uber-Media Server. I had the box sitting there for 24 hours turned on. When I went back to check it out prior to boxing it up, the system was crashed. The BIOS would Post but the server would not Boot the OS.

After troubleshooting everything else, I switched out the Samsung 840 SSD with another SSD (OCZ) that was already preloaded with an OS and Software. The server booted right up and was fine.

This is clearly a case of infant mortality and can happen to any manufacturer. I am just a little disappointed since I had spent 14 hours worth of time to Load the OS, Software, and all the drivers particular to this build. All gone! I have never had a failure of an SSD before like this.

I started another install with another Samsung 840 (120GB this time) SSD and I had problems getting that one to be recognized by the TS140 server.

I contacted Samsung and they sent an e-mail with request for more information before they would issue an RMA.

I have used OCZ, Sandisc, Crucial, and Intel SSD's without any of these problems. I have had OCZ Vertex 3 SSD's running in servers that run 24/7 for more than a year with no problems at all.

The Samsung SSD's are not inexpensive compared to other SSD's so I really cannot recommend them to anyone since they don't seem to have the reliability or features that make them worthwhile over other brands. I do not think I will be purchasing more Samsung SSD's in the future.

3 out of 5 eggsMUST FORMAT BEFORE ACCESSING

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: TBD. I just got my laptop to recognize this SSD
Samsung tech support was helpful in getting this drive running on my laptop.

Cons: To someone who does very little hardware swapping or has little experience with formatting drives, it may not be immediately apparent that simply plugging the drive in as external storage or for data migration does not allow for access to the drive. The drive is not accessible until it has been formatted.

Other Thoughts: I initially purchased this as external storage but recently decided it would work better as a primary drive for my new laptop. Im stubborn and most of the time a DIY'er so I was frustrated when I couldn't get my old or new laptop to recognize this SSD. I feel like a moron but I haven't had to format a hard drive in years and this being my first experience with a SSD, I figured it would just pop up like a flash drive if I plugged it in as an external. After trying for more than a few hours this weekend and lots of googling I got myself nowhere. It came down to a call to samsung tech support to figure out that it just needed a quick format. I'm also new to windows 8 so they told me where to find disk management to format the drive. The manual for this SSD just shows how to plug the drive in for data migration, but no reference to formatting prior to that. I just feel like it wouldn't be that hard to have a quick windows/mac formatting walkthrough, or at least a mention of formatting prior to use. I was also disappointed to hear that after all of this, their data migration software cant handle a drive with a recovery partition and will fail to clone. so now I will have to download a separate migration software in order to install this SSD to my new laptop. I will update or rerate the actual performance of this product after I have some time to evaluate it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive for the money.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: One of the least expensive drives for the money. Good read speeds with Samsung reliability. Samsung software.

Cons: Not that much cheaper than the superior EVO. Write speeds are pre SATA6 levels.

1 out of 5 eggsBad SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Somewhat faster than a conventional hard drive - when it works.

Cons: Started spitting out errors and failing to boot Windows after about 8 months. I have been having continuous issues but now I can't even reinstall a fresh install of Win 8. This SSD has really lowered my view of Samsung.

Other Thoughts: Will update review if my Samsung replaces my SSD (as it was under warranty) and it works out. But for now I am feeling very negative toward this product.
