5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: still working fine after a year of heavy use.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: the bottom plastic piece kinda sags in the middle, no big deal though.

1 out of 5 eggsCrash and Burn

Pros: Quiet, convenient, easy to use.

Cons: It died, taking 5 years worth of graphics work with it after only 3 months of having it.

Other Thoughts: After moving ALL of my graphics portfolio and backing up my entire C drive, I had only used 6% of this drive's capacity. I was thrilled... that is until I tried to access my files about two months later and my PC no longer recognized the drive. I called WD tech support and after only two steps of trying to troubleshoot the problem, they said I would have to take it to a data recovery center and pay to have the data extracted (if possible) myself. The device is also only warrantied through April (I received it as a gift for Christmas) one year from the date of manufacture, not the date of purchase. They will replace the drive under warranty but what about my data?

I'm livid. The whole point in having an external drive is to safeguard your data from catastrophic computer failure. I never even thought about drive failure. Now I'm up the creek with no data. What a bummer.

3 out of 5 eggs50-50 success

Pros: fairly good speed.
like the enclosures for ease of connecting other drives - although the replacement (big card) doesn't work some of my seagate drives.

Cons: there are 2 styles of internal connectors and they don't work with all drives.
no power switch.
plastic insulates and retains heat instead of a metal enclosure helping passively cool the drive's heat.
one of the drives starting dying 10 months after i bought it - no corruption, just at 10% speed.
1 year warranty on sole-self-sourced enclosured drives is lame

Other Thoughts: RMAd the drive with a week to go in the 1 year warranty. WD's rma process is a pain. you have to find the link on their website and then input the serial #. the warranty period is initially dated from manufacture date not purchase date so you might have to email a copy of the invoice to reset the warranty date. after that, it's pretty straightforward: cross-ship a replacement and pay for return shipping of the dead drive - they do offer a discounted shipping option.

you'll get a refurb back.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat External Hard Drive

Pros: No software, Good design, Lots of Space

Cons: Nothing

Other Thoughts: This is a great external hard drive, this is my first Western Digital hard drive. The other external hard drive I had was a Seagate Pro 750GB, that one filled up in a year and half. So this one should last me more than that as this one has double the space than that one. Right now I am using one of the things that came in the packaging and using it to stand up the hard drive. Has some good transfer speeds for a usb 2.0, as I don't use esata even though the Seagate Pro has one haven't bought the cable and I'm ok with those speeds as I don't transfer more the 10GB's and that doesn't take that long to transfer. This is a great hard drive and would recommend to anyone.
This was my first newegg.com purchase and newegg has won my allegiance, I will be buying from them again. They were real nice when I bought this hard drive. I bought this on black friday and they were nice to pricematch their own price after they lowered it a week later.

Pros: Smaller and more compact than the mybook.

Cons: I never use the western digital software as it sometimes corrupts the software.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good overall

Pros: Very sleek design. Runs extremely cool under load

Cons: Even though its a 1.5tb harddrive, it comes formatted with 14gigs gone, not a big deal with such a large drive, but still a significant amount

Other Thoughts: am please with it, although 2 days after I bought this, it was on sale for $99

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Runs pretty cool, just warm to the touch after a rull chkdsk /r
Works with the Wii (homebrew channel plus usb loader gx)
Transfers at speeds around 30-44mb/s
The light is in the back (FANTASTIC DESIGN)

Cons: A power switch would be nice but its not really an issue

Wish it had e-sata as well.

Other Thoughts: I got this on the cheap (~89) from a newegg holiday deal with free shipping. Could not pass that up. Awesome drive.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Sleek Quiet Drive

Pros: WOW, this external drive looks good. I especially like the plastic since it doesn't add weight to it. It sits very nicely with any desktop setup. I just moved over 500GB of files over and it's warm to touch. It doesn't vibrate loudly like an external drive I bought last year.

Cons: - No e-SATA (I thought it's standard stuff nowadays)
- therefore slow

Other Thoughts: It's a very good value backup external drive. I will be installing Allway Sync to help me out.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Huge capacity, very quite compared to my 500GB WD My Book. The simple form factor is great. It stays very cool compared to my 500GB My Book. Great price.

Cons: Slow transfer rate for very large amount of files.

Other Thoughts: I like how it goes to idle after use so the lack of a power switch doesn't bother me. I don't mind the slow transfer rate because my initial backup for my WD 500GB HD (Ran out of space) took about 5 hours. But that's a one time thing since you most likely won't be transfering 400GB files often. And even then the slow transfer rate may of been due to making a backup of another external hd.

As an example, I can transfer a 200mb file in about 5 seconds. This works well since it contains my backups of dvds that I play through my media center pc.
