1 out of 5 eggsnot the product specified

Pros: na

Cons: na

Other Thoughts: I ordered this drive because it has firewire connections which I need for a video project next week using a mac. the model that arrived did not have firewire ports and instead had usb 3. If they were out of stock or this was a newer model I should have been informed before shipping. I now look like I have no clue what I am doing to my companies CEO. needless to say I am not happy

4 out of 5 eggsintended for Mac use

Pros: The drive is designed for use with Mac. It's formatted for Mac (HFS+J). Very fast with USB3 (145 MB/s read/write).

On a Mac, very simple to setup since its already formatted for mac. No software needed, can be used immediately by time machine (the built in backup software on OSX). However, it does include some useful utilities, including the SMART software to read the SMART status (it passed), a quick disk test, a full disk test, a full erase utility, and a password lock utility that includes full disc encryption option. None of them are required, but they are all useful. Some portable drives don't support SMART, so it was nice to see how easy it was to access the SMART status (2 clicks).

Cons: No windows software included (but can be downloaded from wd.com). Instructions for reformatting drive for windows are on a PDF on the Mac-formatted drive. And even then, the instructions say to go to wd.com and read knowledge base article 3865, which is the Microsoft instructions for using Disk Manager in Windows. Also, there is no firewire connection or cable as shown in the Newegg pictures. It's strictly USB only.

Other Thoughts: If you don't have a mac and bought this for a windows computer, you wouldn't find any instructions how to reformat the drive. The BOX says "for use with windows, disk must be reformatted". But the "instructions" in the box is a piece of paper with 3 pictures: plug in, insert USB cable into computer and drive, and start using it (drag files to it). So, be warned that you need to know how to format a drive in windows (also, how to delete a mac partition, which shows up as 2 partitions in windows disk manager).

The software I downloaded from wd.com for windows includes a backup software suite that does real-time changed-files backups, as well as manual backups. The files it creates are readable from any windows computer, but the folder structure has to be navigated a few levels down before you recognize your files.

Overall, if you intend to use this with a Mac, it's a 5 star drive. Wicked fast with USB3, ready for use with time-machine or for just dragging files to it.

For Windows, it's a good drive but you need some technical knowledge to reformat it for NTFS, and make your way to the western digital website to download backup software (if you are into backup software for windows), or you can just copy files to it. Therefore, 4/5 for Windows users.

The reason I keep repeating this mac formatting thing is because, from what I can see, it's not totally obvious that it's intended for Macs.

Final thoughts: the pictures on Newegg show a firewire cable. That's from an old version of the My Book Studio. The one I received was NOT firewire at all, but USB3, with the new USB3 cable. So there is NO firewire, only USB. It is backwards compatible with USB2 but will operate at the much slower USB2 speeds.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost a miss..

Pros: I received this as part of the newegg eggxpert review program.

My first impression was nice, it was a small heavy box, and everything was packaged well,, to the extent shipping would have a hard time damaging it.

The hard drive comes in a thick aluminum casing, which is premium in my opinion. after an hour of copying files it was barely warm to the touch.

I would like to list more pros but,,

Cons: My second impression was not so good.

the provided 3ft usb cable had a real hard time fitting into the back of the drive. This connector is far from new to me,, and I was really concerned and then it finally went in. I have yet to take it out.

Then.. I plug the drive into my computer, and (as i have many drives) I have to go to disk management to change the drive letter,, as im used to...
but no,, when I get the it says I need to initialize the disk.. which I do,, which of course means they failed to add the software at the manufacturer and shipped out a blank drive.

so i dont get to test or use any of the features, one would be buying this for,, as opposed to a generic one without software.

Other Thoughts: At least the drive works.. but the software is supposed to be what you are paying for. the aluminum housing is great and because of that and the fact that it works for my needs I give it 3 eggs.

In comparison to a similar seagate drive i received last week,, I like this ones housing better,, other than that. the seagate was a little faster and came from the factory as intended.

I have watched WD reviews slowly drop over time if you watch all of their products,, and I now get to personally contribute to that.

If I needed the software I would be very upset.

4 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital My Book 1tb External Hard Drive

Pros: Aluminum Case looks really nice and should allow the internal drive to run cooler. Drive is fairly quick reading and writing transfered some jpg. files and some mp3's to it from an internal drive about 6gb of music took about 2.0-2.5 minutes, jpg files took about 1.0 -1.5 minutes to transfer about 3gb of them. External drive to External drive one USB 3.0 and the other USB 2.0 took about 1.5-2.0 times as long as did the internal to external drive this would be a normal situation due to USB 2.0 being slower transfering data! Drive has it's own power supply which is a plus for those that have alot of USB periphials as this will be one less drag on the system power.

Cons: This drive came to me formatted for use in a Mac and so it had to be reformatted and installed into my Windows 7 PC, not much trouble for me but to a new user it could be a nightmare for them!!So I deducted an egg for this .

Other Thoughts: I really like this drive it looks sleek and is very quiet! Very competitive pricing considering the outer case is made of aluminum and don't forget the 3 year warranty! If your in the market for an external drive take a really long look at this series of drives also it comes in up to a 4 tb size from Western Digital! Thanks

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful fast external hard drive.

Pros: Beautiful aluminum enclosure
Multiple connection options.
Optional password protection
Hardware encryption
Software included (utilities and backup)
3 year warranty
Runs cool and quiet

Cons: Formatted in HFS+ for Mac users, needs to be reformatted for PC users (NTFS)
Formatted space 930gb.
Power brick.

Other Thoughts: I actually have a slightly different version of this drive. The version I have comes with USB 2 and 3 and not usb 2 and firewire like this drive. However I have so enjoyed my drive that I decided to post here to help you make up your mind. Both drives contain the WD Cavier Green hard drive which runs cool and quiet and this drive is pretty speedy in usb 2.0 and 3.0. Tried some real world testing with Sandra and PC Mark and when connected to my pc using native USB 3 and a 1.4gb test file, I created, I was able to copy the file to the drive in a little over 21 seconds (51 seconds with USB 2) and observed write and read speeds of 87 mbps and 108 mbps (opposed to 25mbps and 27mbps using USB 2). I would expect the firewire 800 connection to perform even better than USB 3.0. The drive is beautiful in brushed aluminium comes with hardware encryption, can be password protected, is cool and quiet and reasonably fast. This drive is currently connected to my WD TV Live + via USB 2.0 acting as attached storage for my movies and music and is working flawlessly as a NAS. The drive comes with software that is basic but workes perfectly (I actually use Acronis for my backups, but have tested this software and can confirm that it works well enough).
I really can't think of anything bad to say about this drive. Perhaps it might suite the Apple fans out there more than the PC guys as the brushed aluminium will match the airbooks perfectly and it comes pre formatted for Apple. Much recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsHurray for Hardrives!

Pros: It's shiny! It has 1TB of storage space! It works! It's quiet!

Cons: Clanked and sounded loud on first spin up, but otherwise none.

Other Thoughts: Latest versions do not include the Firewire 800-to-400 cable. This unit is USB and Firewire 800 only. Was disappointed, as the Mac it was going to be attached to is a FW400 unit. But otherwise, it's a standard FW/USB External HD. Store stuff on it, use it for Time Machine.
