2 out of 5 eggsA question for Jewel with Kingston

Pros: I have a question for Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. It has now been well established that Kingston is presently using asynchronous NAND in the 120 and 240 models of the V300. I have not been able to find definitive information regarding this 60GB version.

Please be straightforward with the answer to this question to help potential buyers in their evaluation:

"Does this SV300S37A/60G model also currently ship with asynchronous NAND components?"

Cons: See possible con above but I'll wait the Kingston response.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support, here to answer your question and add some clarification. As you may already know, the V300 model is an entry level SSD designed to balance price and performance to do this we source both Synchronous and Asynchronous NAND from various Tier 1 NAND manufacturers. What this means is that all capacities of the V300 drive are built with either type of NAND, not solely asynchronous. Currently, the V300 in all capacities is being produced with either synchronous or asynchronous 20nm NAND. Despite the type of NAND in the V300, it will perform at it's advertised specifications. In order to provide a clearer picture of expected benchmark results we have included additional results showing a worst case scenario from AS SSD and Crystal Disk Mark in the V300's datasheet. If your planned usage of the SSD is to run the OS and applications be aware that a majority of that data is compressible and would not be noticeably affected by the type of NAND used in the V300. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Datasheet available here: http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/SV300S3_us.pdf

For a better understanding of the V300 overall performance, please see the V300 Benchmark Brief: http://media.kingston.com/support/downloads/V300_Benchmark_Brief_MKF_586.pdf

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks As Intended

Pros: Pretty fast, slim, works well.

Cons: None really, other than what's in my "other" section.

Other Thoughts: I had a bit of an issue installing a fresh windows 7 x64 build on this drive, regardless of the drivers on hand and BIOS settings. Installed like a champ with fresh windows 8 though. I don't really feel this was the fault of the product though.

I had gotten this for a small project I was doing where I needed to mount a HDD in a really odd place with very little room. It defiantly does the job and hasn't failed on me yet.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm so Eggcited!

Pros: I just made an old Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H my fastest computer in the house. I have 8 computers of different windows,7,XP,Vista, Maverick. All of them built pretty good lots of ram. I had to make my wifes Window7 from XP so she would feel safe. She only does small things so I got this small SSD very low price. This computer with 4 gigs of ram blows away all my systems now. I will be doing most of them SSD soon as the price goes further down. With 256 units

Cons: Only had it a day and love it. Please see other thoughts to alleviate a few possible cons.

Other Thoughts: Did a little homework before purchase and install. #1. Turn off Automatic Disk Defragment. Apparently this will wear out a unit quickly. Youtube shows you. #2 Set the SSD to AHCI per many post and in the instructions for this unit. This is where I had to go into the Bios 14 times. Getting the Windows disc to boot and load 7. After 10 times I tried setting all to sata. That worked, but was slow and not correct. Started over and finally realized I had to Plug my Optical drive into sata ports 4 or 5. it was in number 1. That port gets changed to AHCI while 4 and 5 do not. So I hope this helps and it felt real good to figure it out . The System and I both feel awesome now. LOL. To make this clearer. My Motherboard has 5 SATA ports. Apparently a part of the bios says to set numbers 4 and 5 to SATA. These stay as SATA NOT AHCI when SATA, RAID or AHCI option is set to AHCI. I used 5 for the DVD/CD writer and I think I could have used 4 also. I used 1 for the SSD but I think 2 or 3 would have been fine also. WOW this things is fast. I will get another soon. Saw one on sale for 104 and it was 240 gigs ADATA.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Product but have had boot issues.

Pros: I've had this SSD running for about 2 months now. Was a steal when I bought two of it each at around $49.99. I probably would not buy it again at the current price. Rated speeds are about accurate.

Cons: Have had a few problems booting up a month and a half in. Really doesn't bother me much since I have these installed on mining rigs that run 24/7 but it can be a pain when having to reboot my rigs.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest the Samsung 840 series. A tad bit pricier but the build quality is better and they are more reliable.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi John,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer our assistance. We have a firmware update available for the V300 drive, available on our support page: http://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/downloads?product=SV300S3&filename=V300_525fw_Win . The latest version is 525, if the drives you have are firmware version 520 or earlier they could be experiencing an issue related to the COMRESET command that was fixed with the 521 version and subsequently the 525. The updates are not incremental, any V300 can be updated to 525 if not already that version. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow

Pros: Pretty cheap.

Cons: This is an underperformer -compared to the other V300 that I have! It turns out that Kingston has changed the kind of memory they use. Search 'Kingston Slower Micron NAND'

5 out of 5 eggsI love ssd!

Pros: If you have not gotten at least one SSD for your computer, you are greatly missing out. I got this for 45 bucks on here for a starter drive, and I already have plans on getting more.

Cons: None for the price.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest spending the money to get the biggest drive you can, its worth it in the long run. But this one was a great drive for running CS:GO, Rome:2, Arma:3 and Dayz on and basically be full. Loads everything in 10 seconds.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointing write performance

Pros: Great price point. Descent read performance.

Cons: Poor write performance. Not even close to the specs listed.

Other Thoughts: I knew these were budget SSDs but I was hoping for better write performance. While the ATTO benchmark shows close to the specified read/write performance other benchmarks like Crystal and AS SSD show seriously degraded write performance. I am getting in the neighborhood of 85MB/s with this drive and well over 350MB/s from either my Samsung EVO or an older Corsair ForceGT. I even tried updated the firmware to the new 525 version. That actually made thing a little worse for both reads and writes. I wish I could go back to the 505 version. If Kingston is listening please make 505 available for download.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. Please understand the speed of the drive is not greatly affected by the firmware version. The speed of the drive with firmware 505 would be essentially the same as 525, releasing an out dated firmware would not be viable as it would open the drive to the bugs that are fixed in the newest version. The speed ratings in AS SSD and Crystal Disk Mark are different from ATTO due to the fact that they use fully compressed or incompressible data in the testing workload while ATTO benchmark uses uncompressed or compressible data. The drive is advertised at 450MB/s as tested in ATTO Benchmark. The V300 is designed to be an entry level SSD for HDD replacement with a balance of price and performance. To do this we source both Synchronous and Asynchronous NAND from Tier 1 NAND manufacturers, currently shipping drives are being made with Asynchronous NAND. This variance creates a delta in performance while all V300 will meet our specifications, some will out perform. For a better understanding of the V300's performance, please check here: http://media.kingston.com/support/downloads/V300_Benchmark_Brief_MKF_586.pdf . For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.
