2 out of 5 eggsGood receiver but HDMI issues

Pros: Using HDMI to drive my home system Blue-ray, Cable, PS3.
Easy setup, Airplay works well with the network attachment, Nice sound quality. Drives my Polk home 5.1 system w/ no complaints. Good warranty coverage. Good phone support.

Cons: Major HDMI board issues. Unit worked intermittently after first month and then went out all together. Had to send to Yamaha repair shop to replace HDMI board and was told this is common on these units from Yamaha. Very concerned this will happen again soon and be w/o warranty coverage.

Other Thoughts: In general I like Yamaha and if it was not for the HDMI issue I would have no issue with this receiver. However the HDMI is the heart of the unit for my purposes (and most others I assume) so I cannot in good conscience give more than 2 eggs given the failure I had. Warranty service was easy but very disappointed overall.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointment

Pros: Had this receiver for a little more than a year...and I must say I was very happy with it.

Cons: Two weeks ago one day it just started acting funny on the sound volume...getting lower then higher...I spent all this money thinking I was getting a good product but I am very disappointed...I may discontinue anymore service at Newegg.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy...I read where there are failure components with in this receiver....all I know is it sucks and I am out over #350.00 Is a piece of junk

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Setup went easily enough. Things worked when plugged in the way I expected.

I like the remote. Buttons are laid out nicely, very intuitive. Much better than the Sony remote I replaced with lots of confusing acronyms on the buttons.

It has lots of inputs. This was a feature I searched quite a while for, to accommodate all the older gear I have. Still did not have all the inputs I wanted. There's no SVHS for my old VCR. No big loss. And not enough 2 channel audio inputs. Only one set on the back and one on the front. So I have to manually switch cables sometimes.

Includes Ethernet and optical cables. This was a surprise since receivers usually don't come with cables. But it meant I bought extra cables.

FM and AM reception worked surprisingly well with the included antennas. It was all but useless on my old Sony. Not too important since I don't listen to radio much.

Cons: I was hoping this device would take composite and component video signals and route them out the HDMI. It does not seem to do that. So I need 3 sets of cables to my projector: HDMI, Component, and Composite.

Tried to use this with an HDMI to DVI adaptor connected to a DVI to HDMI cable to a projector that has HDMI input. Does not work. I'll have to buy another HDMI to HDMI cable.

Can't find a way to connect my XBox. The component video out will plug in but the only ways to use sound with component video are optical or coaxial. The XBox has 2 channel stereo for the audio out. I was hoping for a mode where I could set the receiver to take video from one AV channel and audio from another but so far have not found a way to do that.

Other Thoughts: Got this for a good price. Much cheaper than the Sony I replaced.

I wanted an option for Pandora but those receivers were all much more expensive. However this one does have Internet radio with a good selection of stations so I don't miss Pandora after all.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Receiver

Pros: Good Sound Quality. YPAO seems to help sound quality on martin Logan Motion setup. Not sure if its quite as good as my old Yamaha HTR-6180. Air play is awesome.

Cons: Don't update firmware via network, this can kill the receiver. Only do this via usb drive.

2 out of 5 eggsJust Ok

Pros: Easy to setup. Nice features.

Cons: Can't seem to get good volume out of the receiver. I have to turn it to 30dB to watch a movie. I have an older Yamaha that fills the room with sound at 40dB with smaller speakers.

Other Thoughts: I spent too much time swapping out speakers thinking they were the problem. It just seems like the receiver just isn't as good as the older one I have. I will continue to search for a good configuration, and will update this review if I figure it out. If you don't want to have buyers remorse I would look at other models or other brands.

1 out of 5 eggsStay a way

Pros: Good sound

Cons: It is losing it setting every time I start the receiver, worst of all, the receiver looses the video and sound when increasing or lowering the volume and when changing resolutions loose the video for several seconds and no sound
need to power off the receiver to communicate with smart TV, with cable box there is picture and No sound , need to be very lucky to find out what relay work to start sound , very frustrating product

Other Thoughts: Don't Buy it

5 out of 5 eggsThis receiver is wonderful for the $$$

Pros: Power. Tons of Options for Sound Field (yamaha always does this) great enhancements that don't sound processed. Nice Speaker Wire Termicals that accept even my beefy 14 gauge wire.

On Screen Display coupled with Yamaha's mic to set up your configuration saves boat loads of time.

This thing makes my Allison CD-7's sing in stereo mode and surround. My pioneer center channel jams and my surrounds do their surrounding, they suck but its not the amps fault now is it??

Love this lil guy!

Cons: Vid Up Conversation is missing. Not the end of the world, click my LG Plasma's remote on the fast input setting to AV or I could use my Receiver's remote...im too busy (cough, lazy) to configure.

Other Thoughts: Easy up time. Having network connection with this power rating at this price is a steal if you know what you are doing otherwise. Simple setup, not overly massive. Nice display.

Clean design, clean power, clean sound, clean inputs. Buy it, stop looking.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far love it

Pros: Never been unhappy with a yamaha. Great quality, great sound. Powers my floorstanding speakers perfectly. The networking feature is great - I control the unit right from my phone.

Cons: None - I had my previous yamaha receiver for years without an issue. They make quality products.
