1 out of 5 eggsUpdate from 11/04/2014 Review

Pros: None.

Cons: The third replacement 450 GB raptor died right after a fresh install of Windows 7. The fourth and fifth replacements passed the WD Lifeguard Diagnostics, but failed to accept a fresh install. I ran the diagnostics a second time and it indicated a dead drive on both of them.

Other Thoughts: All of the replacement drives are labeled recertified. WD told me that the original drive cannot be replaced with a new drive. WD has told me the standard corporate phrase, "rigorously test and verify all of our drives, prior to shipping, with burn-in and diagnostic tests" many times.

Before the flood at their HDD factory a few years ago, the raptor drives I purchased were rock solid. After the flood, the longest a WD drive I owned lasted about one year.

I'm currently using Windows XP on a creaky, old drive that's barely chugging along. I hope to buy a working drive before alzheimer's kicks in and I forget how to install an OS.

4 out of 5 eggsFaster than SSD for normal computing, and...

Pros: After I "upgraded" to the Raptor sata6, and Consolidate defraged with Auslogics Free...-
My computing is Much faster!

Cons: No 3 1/2" desktop cradle, and no Newegg prompt to add to purchase...!
For this price, they should include one!

Other Thoughts: CCleaner has a default option set called "Wipe Free Space", that ruins a SSD drive (too many writes).
It takes "hours" to complete on the Raptor, with No performance improvement-

"The wipe free space option creates a Huge file that takes up all your space, then it deletes this huge file, in turn overwriting all deleted information so it is, in theory, unrecoverable. It can take a substantial amount of time".

5 out of 5 eggsGreat File Server drives

Pros: Great performance and value for small business's trying to run a file/app server. Sata III connection is like the cherry on the pie
5 Year warranty!!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Running two of these in an HP 5750 desktop turned into file server. I have the drives configured in a mirror array for redundancy and a hot spare saved onsite for quick array repair.

With the lack of the heat sink (obviously to make it fit in 2.5" bays) i was slightly concerned about heat build up within the oem desktop, but with a carefully placed EverCool System Cooler fan in the top 5.25" bay, I am able to have a solid stream of air passing over the hdds and out the front of the pc. No reported problems with temps since Jan 2011.

as always, feel free to gmail my nickname with questions or comments

1 out of 5 eggsFAIL

Pros: None

Cons: I have had 18 file corruptions that caused system failure and required a re-imaging in 2 days. Now waiting on an RMA to fix my computer. Enterprise level my rear every time I shutdown windows normally I lose 2-3 files, generally system files.

Other Thoughts: Here is hoping the replacement works. Poor WD quality control. An Enterprise level disk should never have shipped with this level of failure.

Pros: faster than my old Raptor 300gb, low noise, work very good on AHCI configuration, plus the added capacity is welcome.

Cons: none, price is right for this product.

3 out of 5 eggsMake sure it fits your application...

Pros: Very sturdy construction, top cover does not flex like the standard laptop drives I have sitting here. It is pretty heavy though, that may be an issue to some users. I would guess it is almost twice as heavy as most "standard" drives, more on this below...

Cons: This is a 2.5" drive as stated... But Newegg failed to note or provide dimensions that it is quite a bit taller in height than any laptop drive I have encountered. I wasn't even awhere that they have different heights.
The height is 0.56", (14.5mm), all my other laptop drives are about 0.36", (9.2mm).

Other Thoughts: Hopefully Newegg will publish the dimensions for these. This is my first issue with anything purchased firm them, and have been a long-time customer.
I was looking forward to try the 10K drive in XPS1530. gave it 3 eggs although it was not hooked-up.
