1 out of 5 eggsShort-lived

Pros: Can mount as Linux drive and then backup with rsync.

Cons: Slow (even menu pages take several seconds to display & backups take hours). Firmware upgraded eliminated advertised features (like encryption). Died after 9 months (all data lost).

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed Performance

Pros: Very easy to use. The appeal of the "Plug and Play" feature was what made me buy this product over other brands. Also runs very quiet. And based on several other very positive reviews, it appeared this product was a safe bet.

Cons: Did not perform as advertised. First 3 months, it worked like a champ. Then, everytime I turned it on to archive data, the Windows Hardware Wizard came up prompting me to install software for the drive. Made 2 attempts by phone and 3 attempts by e-mail to contact Simpletech regarding the problem and have been unable to get a response from them. I will be returning this product.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive

Pros: It's been over a year since i got one of these, and having been subjected to both high vibrations and subzero (C) temperatures several times, i'm pleased to say it still runs like the day i got it.

Cons: This drive vibrates. I solved the problem by putting a few pieces of cardboard (later i upgraded to rubber) under the feet. Also, the detachable feet can be somewhat annoying when packing to travel.

Other Thoughts: Origionally purchased as storage for my laptop (when that was my only computer), its now sitting on my desktop case fufilling the same purpose. It's not a *perfect* drive, but still an excellent choice.

2 out of 5 eggs

Comments: When I installed this drive on my Win98 system, it showed only 9GB of storage. I called SimpleTech support they said it was defective, return it. I RMAed it and got a replacement. Same problem. Before returning it for a refund, I decided to try it on another Win98 computer. It worked. So I decided to keep it. But it is hot and it vibrates. It buzzed so bad I put it on a softcover book under it to dampen the noise. Forget this drive.
I later bought a FXXXXX TFDU16072 from Newegg. It costs less and I had no problems.

5 out of 5 eggs

Comments: Very nice. It arrived 2 days after I ordered it. You don't even have to install drivers with a cd. Very fast transfer speeds; uploaded over 40 Gb of anime in less than 20 minutes. It's quiet, though it get pretty hot with prolonged use. Definantly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggs

Comments: Just a quick comment on Taylor's review to remove any confusion -

This drive is USB only - no firewire connection. Just check the photos that show the back of the drive enclosure. Other than that, it's a great drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, works fine

Comments: I bought this drive right before it went on sale. So far so good. It was truly plug and play just as advertised. The only drawback to this drive is that it doesn't have a fan, so it can get a little hot if you transfer files for several hours/days. Overall though, I'm happy.
