1 out of 5 eggsNEVER EVER BUY THIS

Pros: 1. Look and Feel
2. Easy setup
3. router administration can be done from any device including over WiFi
4. Dual band

Cons: Here we go:
1. Weak signal (yes I’m sitting pretty close to the router in my 1 bed room apartment)
2. Zero Reliability
a. Repeatedly internet connection drops! And had to restart router
b. Internet slows down all of a sudden! And had to restart router
c. Vonage phone calls drops! And had to restart router
d. Youtube breaks! And had to restart router
3. QOS settings are not self-intuitive. Setting it up only breaks internet…
4. Dual band for name sake

Other Thoughts: If all your devices works on internet, don't buy this. Ask for refund if you can.

2 out of 5 eggsPretty bad QOS , drops connection

Pros: Small size and easy web based interface

Cons: The performance of router is very bad. Multiple times, netflix hangs because of connection drops on wired network, VPN client drops connections when using this n/w. Except small size and web based setup, everything is bad. Worst router your money can buy. I did not buy fron newegg, but wish I had bought via them to resend it back for a different make/model.

1 out of 5 eggsBad quality

Pros: Takes up very little space
theoretical gigabit ports (don't really operate as such though)
White with nice blue LED's

Cons: I bought this router to replace a Linksys... BIG MISTAKE!!!

Intermittent lag spikes are a pain (didn't have them with other routers and do not have them when directly connected to cable modem).

The real pain about this router is this: about once a day, give or take, I will lose connection to the internet... or so it seems. A quick search will reveal a multitude of users experience this same phenomenon and they 'fix' it by rebooting the router.

Working in the IT field as a field engineer, I know a little more than the average consumer. This doesn't really lose internet connection, rather, DNS settings need 'renewed'. Although you cannot browse out to a website or such, your non DNS based applications will still work. So, you either have to reboot router OR log in to the interface and click on "advance settings" and RENEW the DHCP.

That is something you SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO DO with a router. First and LAST time I would ever buy a WD router. I would rather take the time to put Windows server on an old machine and make it act as the DHCP server (I'd get better results)

Other Thoughts: your funeral

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Unit

Pros: Great price.
Good Coverage
Great Features
Easy to Use
Easy to setup

Cons: I haven't noticed any yet. It's a great little unit. I don't push it too hard though.

Other Thoughts: Great little unit. One thing to keep in mind is the parental controls will block your streaming services, but you just have to add an exception via MAC address and you're good to to. I beat my head on the wall for a while until I figured that one out for my dvd player, but that's a PBCAK error and not related to the unit itself.

1 out of 5 eggsWhere do I even start?

Pros: Works great when it feels like it.

Cons: Constantly disconnects

Constant Ping Lag

Refuses to have more then 2 Windows 8.1 computers on it for more then a couple of hours then it stops working and I have to restart it.

Other Thoughts: This router works great when it decides that it wants to work. I am always having problems with disconnections and lags that its not worth dealing with. We bought 2 of them, one from Newegg Flash and the other from another site. They have both have their share of issues and I am completely annoyed with both.

One is being used at my parents house, and we are constantly having issues with 2 of the computers fighting each other for the connection and have no idea why since its something we have never seen. They are both using Windows 8.1 so I am not sure if this is the issue, but the darn things kick each other off if both connected after a couple of hours, then when we try to connect them both again, the router freezes until we disconnect both computer from it and then the connection refreshes itself and we are able to connect only one at a time after a couple minutes from each other. Sometimes this happens after a couple hours, then other times it will happen within seconds. The 5ghz range is terrible on that one and I can't even use it in the bedrooms. Yes I realize that the range is shorter, but the one I use in my apartment is able to connect to my computers just fine and they are much farther from the router and another floor up.

The one I purchased for myself worked perfectly for a while, then it started kicking me off the 5ghz until I updated. Once updated, it then started lagging out and when I would be in any of my games, it would DC from my games for about 30 seconds, and then would lag bringing me to a ping of about 400. I unplugged it since I was so frustrated with it and went back to using my old router.

After not using it for a while, I decided to try using it again, and go figure it works okay, but after a couple days, people are unable to connect to the 2.4ghz part of the router and we have to unplug and restart the router.

I have seen other reviews so I guess I can't be surprised that I am suffering from some of the same problems as others. Honestly though, I can't recommend these at all. With the problems I have had with both, which shows its not an isolated problem, I just can't say anything positive for the problems I am experiencing with the small amount of time of owning them. When I first bought them, I thought that they were both AWESOME routers, then after a couple months, its like they break themselves down and decide that they don't want to work anymore.

What a waste of money this was.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear TeckXee, we apologize for the continued inconvenience you have experienced with your devices. We always recommend ensuring that your router is up to date with the latest firmware, as this may easily resolve the issues you are experiencing. Assistance in how to update your routers firmware can be viewed on page 66 of the user manual provided by the following link.

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705072.pdf#page=70

If you have already done so and are still experiencing these issues, in the interest of troubleshooting, you may want to reset the device back to factory default, as this will remove any residual configurations that may be causing conflicts within your network from an update that did not fully reset upon reboot of the unit.

If the above recommendations to not solve the concerns you are facing, please contact us at (855) 842-5370, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en&ct=networking

1 out of 5 eggs5G stopped working after a week

Pros: Very good price / Easy Setup

Cons: 5G Wifi stopped working after a week.
After a wonderful week worth experience, 5G wifi quits working, regardless how you reboot it, cold warm. It'll work for a couple of minutes, then, starting rejecting connection requests and broke existing connections. Very frustrated, updated firmware to the latest, no help. Tend to think this is a hardware defect.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine for me.

Pros: Very easy to set up
Great UI

Cons: Lack of blinky lights on the front :(
(I love blinky lights.)

Other Thoughts: So I bought this router on sale and it was definitely an impulse buy. Honestly it has all the features I was looking for; gigabit, dual-band, and USB for printer sharing AND storage.

Set up was very easy. Plug the thing in tot the thing and log into it's IP address with the stock credentials and the it will guide you through the rest.

So I have not tried a printer with the USB, but I do have an external HDD hooked up and the setup for that was literally two clicks.

Overall it works. I have had no issues, I don't have a massive home network, I don't have a complicated set up. It just works.

5 out of 5 eggsbest router I've ever had

Pros: I purchased this in October at an obscenely low price on newegg. I wasn't expecting much but for the price, I figured I'd shelve my current netgear router and try it out. That way I have a backup router. This thing is amazing. I'm shocked at the bad reviews. I've not had a single issue with this. Rock solid connection, no drops after four months. Boots right up when I shut it down. Connects via wps to my range extenders without issue. I don't know what the issue is with other people, but then again I've had issues with networking equipment that got glowing reviews from others so I guess it depends on your setup. I'm just an average joe with average tech knowledge and this unit has served me well.

Cons: I don't like the white color of the unit, but that's aesthetics.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for what i paid

Pros: - it just works and a decent uptimes with good wireless connectivity
- Dual band is useful and the second band works well with my nexus 7 (2013) and office laptop
- Data speeds are decent in 2.4 and pretty fast in 5
- I have hooked up my seagate ext hard drive(1TB ) which has my movies, songs and pictures. it works almost flawlessly as a upnp server and a windows/smb share. from my ubuntu machine i can easily set up a backup script which will run every night and keeps my data safe
- upnp(dlna) functionality works great. I have tried with both iphone and andriod(bubble upnp app in android and Imediashare for iphone) works great in both

Cons: - you will have to reboot it once in a while(it has become pretty rare after i got my configs rt)
- the Fast track QOS is virtually unusable. if you turn it on it will start dropping connections(my advice: turn it off)
- the blue light is a bit distracting
- had to set my modem to static ip to avoid connection dropping problem

Other Thoughts: Be prepared to do a bit of configuring and tinkering with the settings if you buy this. once you do you will get a decent enough product with some good features. Remember it is WD's baby steps on the networking arena . if you want a plug it and forget it kind of router i would suggest pay a bit more an get a netgear/asus . For me i like to try new and cheaper products and is willing to push it to see if it works for me. if you are like me you would be happy with what this can give you.
