Not only does Nikon equipment take great pictures, it makes great scans of the negatives. The Coolscan V ED-LS50 film scanner has an incredible 4000x4000 dpi resolution and uses red, green, blue and IR LEDs to capture an amazing 14 bits per color. The fixed film, movable plane scanning system has a new Nikkor ED glass lens. This setup protects your negatives and allows the scanner greater precision.

It has a USB 2.0 interface for high speed data transfers to your PC or Mac. Once they are in your computer the images are handled by the Nikon Scan 4 image software. Then the Digital ICE Advanced takes over.

This image correction system consists of four main components. ICE takes care of surface defects and scratches on the film. Then the ROC algorithms restore faded colors to their original vibrancy. Film grain effects are minimized with Digital GEM and Digital DEE compensates for exposure errors and reveals details that were hidden in highlights and shadow.

  • newegg Outstanding Image Quality The Nikon Coolscan V ED-LS50 features an impressive scan resolution of 4000 x 4000 dpi and A/D conversion at up to 16 bits for detailed and vivid scan outputs.
  • newegg Digital ICE-4 Advanced Digital ICE-4 Advanced Technology automatically removes dust, scratches and finger prints from scanned film or slides and restores faded images to true, brilliant color, minimizing costly retouching.
  • newegg Film Scanning Made Easy With the direct film loading feature, the Nikon Coolscan V ED-LS50 scans 35mm film or mounted slides without the need for film holders.
  • newegg Simple Installation The Nikon Coolscan V ED-LS50 scanner features a USB2.0 interface for fast data transfer, simple connection to your computer with plug-and-play functionality.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: There isn't any other scanner that offers the quality for the price. If you want extreme quality, send your slides out.

Cons: Using Nikon software is slow. ICE is OK and even necessary but it doesn't always work the tricks you want to have quality scans. ICE can change the basic color of the slide, i.e. sunset scenes look like blue/gray rainy days.

Other Thoughts: The scan is slow and noisy. But for some unknown (to me) reason, when you use the program Vuescan, the scan time is cut by 60% and the noise of the scan is gone. The quality of the scan is also superior.

5 out of 5 eggsProfessional results

Pros: High resolution, good image adjustment tools, professional quality results. I am scanning several thousand slides out of my collection and this scanner is the just ticket. Digital ICE is good for removing scratches, dust and emulsion defects, but so is Photoshop. The build quality is first-rate. The optics are excellent. Scans Kodachrome pretty well. Scans color positives and negatives very well. Handles some of the older Fuji slide film formulations very well.

Cons: Not the best solution for those who are impatient. Photoshop does a better job at image correction in some cases (color restoration, contrast manipulation in particular). The scanner is noisy when scanning. Probably faster to scan without ICE and use Photoshop for defect removal.

Other Thoughts: Lots of people on various sites give this scanner low marks because they think it is too slow. If you want things to go fast, do not get a scanner. Pay a professional service to do the scans for you. But good scanning is expensive and the customer has no control over the outcome. Lots of people also complain about the fact that it seems to reveal lots of scratches, dust and defects in the original image. 4000 DPI scans will always detect scratches, it is after all a high-resolution scanner. That is why I bought it. Just turn on ICE and scan away. Or buy Photoshop and do the scratch removal in batches. I use the scanner with XP SP2 so I have no comment about Vista or OS X compatibility.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Scanner But No Vista 64 bit Support

Pros: I have had this scanner for 2 years and it always performed well. Adjusting different parameters gives exceptionally good scan, possibly better than the original print.

Cons: A little slow but using the faster processor can speed up. My real problem is that Nikon has no plans to support this hardware for the Windows 64 bit Vista. I purposely have upgraded my computer to run 64 bits Vista for the speed but now the effort was worthless.

Other Thoughts: I hope Nikon changes their mind and begin supporting software/driver for the future OS (such as 64 bit Vista) if they want to sell their entire scanner product line.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Piece of Equipment

Pros: Makes high quality scan of 35mm slides/film. With optional adapter can also scan IX240 (Advantix) film. Using slide mounts without glass can also scan single 110 negatives.

Cons: Not as fast as scanning an 8x10 at 300dpi on my CanoScan.

Other Thoughts: There are a lot of reviews stating this scanner is slow. While it is not as fast as normal scanning of a document or photo consider what it is doing. Taking a tiny negative or slide and turning it into a roughly 20 Megapixel image (It can remove scratches and dust, reduce grain, and restore color). Amazing.

5 out of 5 eggsFor 5.xx bills, can't be beat...

Pros: I got a quote from my local darkroom guy for scanning a project I shot in the mid-east, he quoted a grand for my project (about 50 rolls of black and white). I decided to take it on myself and have been watching these come and go on a popular auction site with a name that rhymes with flea-bay for about a month...all going for 510-550; no thanks I'll take a new one instead.
The results have been incredible, the software very powerful and able to draw out detail I never thought I would see in my negatives. I keep my negs clean but scanning at this resolution finds every flaw, digital ice cleans up all the dust beautifully.
This scanner, coupled with my trusty old musty film-slr is my new digital camera! I have a Can0n G9 for the convenience of direct digital, but for quality...it's not even a race. Didn't have to invest in any new glass either.
Buy it, if you don't like it, sell it to some succor on flea-bay for about what you pay here.

Cons: It is not the fastest process, but considering what you get: 22 megapixels and up to 14 bit color depth, and a pro-grade software package (same software group as the 5000ED my lab guy uses) you can hardly fault this scanner. If you need the speed get the 5000ED. For the amount of data this little thing spews out I need to twist-up an new 'puter to keep up...more business for newegg.

Other Thoughts: Ordered it on a Saturday, it was on my doorstep by noon on Tuesday, not bad for standard shipping. Newegg treats it's customers very fairly. Had the thing up and running over my lunch hour (well a half-hour longer than usual) had usable results that same evening within a couple of hours.

4 out of 5 eggsSuperb Scanner - Terrible software

Pros: Stunning resolution, great options for APS, 35mm and mounted slides, built-in Digital ICE for scratch and dust removal

Cons: NikonScan is next to useless, has no Intel Mac version and is very difficult to work with. Not the speediest of scanners

Other Thoughts: The Default scanner settings scan at 4000 dpi and this takes an age to run. My advice to anyone that buys this scanner is buy Vuescan and be very happy. Scanning at 2000 dpi is WAY faster and good for almost every occasion.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Scanner - depends what you want

Pros: Superb resolution, excellent color reproduction, available APS adaptor

Cons: Not for those that want things done quickly!

Other Thoughts: The scanner itself is extrenely good with both USB 2.0 and Firewire options with both Windows and PowerPC mac scanning software.

On the whole the scanner performs wonderfully and produces great, sharp scans. The Nikon Scanner has scratch removal built-in (DigitalICE) and can handle APS, Slide (including Kodachrome) and 35mm film strips. I like this scanner and would recommend it if you have the time

2 out of 5 eggsPainfully Slow

Pros: Scans your negatives.

Cons: So slow that I just abandoned the entire project of digitizing my old negatives. Even though I have taken good care of negatives, the scans show a lot of scratches and dust. Correction is possible but just too much hassle to go through.

Other Thoughts: Invest the money in professional digitzing services instead, is my advice.
