3 out of 5 eggsIts an ok router.

Pros: It was cheap when I bought it. It was selling for 179.99. Not sure why its not considered an over 289.00 dollar router. I dont get it. Why did this thing jump over 100.00 in price?

It is a fairly fast router Ill give it that. Design isnt too bad either. Dlink setup is its usual easy to handle affair.

Its lasted a decent amount of time for a typical router.

Cons: expensive. There are much better options out there for the money. It runs HOT. I added a retired pc case fan that I spliced into a former AC adaptor outlet plug. It would get hot enough that the wifi would just flat out die. Adding the fan helped. If you are having issues. It may be getting too hot.

Firmware isnt being updated any longer.

Currently Im putting more data through the router than it can handle (6+ devices streaming) and another couple just connected to it as well.

wifi is starting to become flaky. Moving almost everything off its 2.5ghz band has helped to some extent, but its a temporary solution at best as even then it will still need to be restarted every few days at most.

1 out of 5 eggsGiving Up

Pros: This ran excellently for a few months...

Cons: I am finally giving up. This was D-Link's top router for a while but it is too much of a headache. Besides the inability to connect to Apple products, now the 2.4 Ghz band is becoming erratic with laptops as well as the phones and iPads. I must constantly (every two days or so) disconnect and reconnect adapters, reset them, etc.

As I look back on my ownership of this, I had problems with the 5GHz band, then constant problems with Apple products, now it is starting to give me connection issues on a laptop 8 feet away from it.

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my August review.

This situation is irritating because I still have a D-Link AP and a pair of switches in my configuration. I tried to stick with this since I am an OCD techie and a cheap skate but I can't spend 30 minutes every two days resetting a router, fiddling with configuration, especially when I experience none of these problems on the devices with a Linksys configured as an AP located downstream of the D-Link (via a switch).

FYI - we have a floor plan with lots of walls, windows, and mirrors obstructing my wi-fi signals but our neighbors are all pretty far away, so I have isolated the issues to the DIR-857. As the primary router - with everything else configured as an AP on variable channels I should not be experiencing these issues.

2 out of 5 eggsReally disappointed

Pros: Wired throughput is fast. When it works, wireless is pretty fast also.

Cons: I must reboot this approx. every other day to connect Apple devices to it wirelessly. I have tried every combination of WPA/WPA2 on this and it craps out on my iPhones and iPads. It also happens on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

I am at the latest firmware v1.4.I have researched everything from Apple boards I can to fix this.

I get that it must be something to do with Apple, but a router should connect to devices. I can't have multiple bad iPhones AND a bad iPad Mini AND a bad iPad. I don't have the same problem with either of my Samsung Tabs.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: not much pros relly

Cons: This router by far the worst router i ve ever owned. I got this router because I was very happy with dir 655. I tried any configuration and always upgraded my firmware when its available. No improvements so far. I can tell you without doubt that this router doesnt worth the money.

1 out of 5 eggsTrouble

Pros: ok when it works

Cons: drops connections, won’t connect wifi and ethernet simultaneously

Other Thoughts: When l spend this kind of money for a router, I expect it to work for years. I had problems configuring this out of the box. Now, 10 months later, I read reviews that describe my exact problems... the thing only intermittently connects, If you think D-Link support has got it together, you are wrong. Think their router tools are baroque? Try calling them for a similar vision of phone-maze hell: and then you are finally told to dial a separate number with its own phone-maze hell.

1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: None

Cons: OK, had a DIR-657 and while the cable tech was installing a new modem as a upgrade he informed me I should upgrade my router. Since installing the dir857 my Android devices wont see my network media server to upload our photos and vids anymore. My myPS3 has a slower connection and inconsistent speed when tested. Disabling the 5GHZ wireless effects the speed of the PS3 when using the cable making it faster but still 5Mbps slower than my old dir657 that indicates a weak infrastructure of the device either processing power or power supply in general, who really knows. Tech had no luck so ever trying to correct the problems I have now and have reinstalled he old 10 year old dir657 and all works fine as before. Two weekends on the phone with tech, firmware upgrade, resetting to default settings and dozens of resets and tweeks and no luck. This product it a peace of junk. For some it may be a upgrade but for me,,,, no.
If you have been using a cheap low quality router it may be an improvement for you but if you want to back up your photos and vids from your android phones it wont work unless you buy a new DLNA media server and get lucky. Just the fact the wired speed goes up with the 5ghz feature turned off raises a red flag.

Other Thoughts: Forget the instructions!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful Router

Pros: Very intuitive interface, power features. Dual band allows for simultaneous wireless networks at each band.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: At first, I thought the router had some issues. I had turned on remote access with graphical authentication over HTTPS. I immediately had problems logging in to the router. Turns out it was being spammed by bots trying to log in to it, so I could never get to the log in page without rebooting it. I turned off remote management and all works great now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router!

Pros: The router has a great design that better matches D-Link's newer style switches. The connection is very stable and features such as guest networks and simultaneous dual-band are great.

Cons: Price is higher than other routers so same may choose to go other routes because of it.

Other Thoughts: I've tried all the major brands, but have come to be a loyal D-Link customer. This router didn't let me down.

5 out of 5 eggsNot Again!

Pros: D-Link Tech Support was SUPER!

I'm sure this will be great and will do an in-depth review just as I did the Asus N66U adapter a couple of days ago.

Cons: D-Link Tech Support confirmed the reason for my worry upon opening the package.

Other Thoughts: When I called D-Link Tech Support and raised my concerns they asked me for the serial number of the unit and put me on hold. They returned and told me the unit was manufactured on June 17, 2011. Get that year. 2011. Further, it was a re-pack. They gave me a Case # and said they would follow it and I should call back with the new unit's SSN.
This happened to me a couple of years ago with Newegg but never before and I've been a good, buying, recommending customer for a dozen years.
Well, at least they paid the return shipping but I'm anxious to get the whole system up and running. See my review of the Asus N66 Uadapter.
