Total Purity Concept for the Finest Sound Quality

Total Purity Concept for the Finest Sound Quality

The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity pre-amplification, anti-vibration technology and independent pure power supplies. All models have a fully discrete power amplifier that helps to minimize distortion. They also adopt independent pure power supplies, allowing dedicated power supplies for the analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. The anti-vibration heatsinks are designed to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure. Independent power supplies for the DACs are designed to further eliminate noise on certain models. Down to every detail, these AV receivers are designed with full emphasis on the highest possible sound quality.

Extensive Audio Codec and Format Support

This AV receiver is compatible with many audio formats such as Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™. They are also compatible with FLAC/WAV 192kHz playback. You will enjoy excellent Blu-ray Disc™ sound quality and other types of high resolution sources.

Extensive Audio Codec and Format Support

Discrete Amp Configuration for High Sound Quality

Discrete Amp Configuration for High Sound Quality

This AV receiver was designed with a strong focus on achieving exceptionally high sound clarity. It employs a discrete amp configuration and a low jitter PLL circuit, which contribute to its excellent audio performance.

4K Pass-Through for Next Generation Super High Resolution Images

4K Pass-through for Next Generation Super High Resolution Images

This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI features including 4K pass-through. 4K refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display for image clarity far beyond present standards.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable with no need for an extra optical cable.

SCENE for One-Touch Start

SCENE for One-touch Start

Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can reset the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop.

*All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.

Network Functions

This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet radio, Pandora® and operate your system via WebBrowser Control. The AV Controller App (from iTunes App Store or Google Play) lets you control various functions from your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android devices.

HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker

HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker

CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.

Compressed Music Enhancer

Compressed Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

Adaptive Dynamic Range Control (DRC)

Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

4 out of 5 eggshdmi solve

Pros: if your hdmi output seems to have died, try this,
power off push and hold the straight button on the reciever (not the remote)
turn the unit on whilst holding straight button
use the program left and right keyus to move the screen over till it says
Init cancle, press straight will that says
init All
then turn the reciver on and off again.

Cons: the issue was that the system could not complete a full hdmi dchp handshake or something,
that some part of the setup the source / reciver / or screen thought that what it was playing was copyright protected or some such, so the receiver cut video.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat sound, great price, get it!

Pros: Clear sound at high volumes
High power per channel for price
Good features for price
Supports Pandora, Spotify, remote via smartphone app
Supports banana connectors
Runs relatively cool

Cons: No built in wireless (optional)
No built in bluetooth (optional)
Single crossover adjustment for all channels (not individual)
GUI Interface ugly/basic

Other Thoughts: Using this amp to drive:
(2) Polk Monitor 70 Series II
(2) Polk Monitor 40 Series II
(1) Polk Monitor CS2 Series II
(1) Polk PSW505

The amp drives this setup very nicely at high volumes in an L shaped space, 13 x 11 ft. open into a 10 x 19 ft. space (333 sq. ft). Drives the speakers fairly clear/well in full range mode (no sub), although it is a stretch. Can be pushed to louder than is comfortable with the sub and crossover at 60 or 80hz.

If you're looking for an amp to push a good sized set of speakers in a 5.1 setup, this is the best bang for buck IMO (paid $229 shipped). Last year's model (2013), but not many significant changes to the 2014 model.

5 out of 5 eggsYamaha RX-V495

Pros: Setup was easy ... 3.1 in a small living room. HDMI from ROKU, Dish Hopper, and Blu-Ray to receiver, HDMI out from receiver to 55" Samsung TV. I used the included mic to auto adjust the speakers, including the 10" Polk PSW10 sub which was included free with the receiver. I added a refurbished Netgear WNCE3001 for wireless ($30)...it plugged into the Ethernet port and USB port (for power) on the back of the receiver. Shipping was free and it arrived the next day after ordering (from Memphis to NW Arkansas). As always, a great purchasing experience with Newegg!

Cons: When a headphone is in use, the speakers can't be used. Seems common among the newer receivers. Digital (input) sound is not converted to analog (output) on the receiver. My husband is somewhat deaf and he needs to use headphones, but I like listening via speakers. So in addition to the HDMI from the Dish to the Yamaha, we had to run a red/white RCA audio cable from the Dish to a little bookshelf stereo, then out to his headphones. Our old pre-HDMI receivers allowed the use of headphones and speakers at the same time, if so desired. Why has that feature been removed from newer equipment?!?!?

Other Thoughts: The sound is great for the budget minded. $300 for the receive and sub, with free shipping.

Newegg is tough to beat !

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems in a year

Pros: This receiver has all the options I needed. Plenty of HDMI. It sets itself up extremely easy. Every single function works. I hooked it up via LAN (faster speed than wireless) and it easily recognized my computer. I can access all my folders to listen to music. The internet radio works flawlessly and it gets stations from all over the world. Iphones and ipads work perfect and the sound is pretty darn good. Airplay is a charm.

I researched amp/receivers for years before buying this one. I use it about 10 hours a day. It has never overheated. I have a PS3 and a WiiU running through it. All work great.

The remote is awesome. It controls everything. It even functions as a remote for Netflix on my PS3. I can use the stop, play, etc. commands just like a dvd player on Netflix.

One thing to note. Even though the PC Music search has a folder for VIDEOS on the screen, videos from PC cannot be played through the internet function. At least not to my knowledge.

Cons: I didn't get it 11/04/2014 when it was on sale WITH a free Polk subwoofer.

Other Thoughts: Unless you're obsessed with HAVING to have every little bell and whistle that you will never use, this is THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK. I bought it through NEWEGG and it came fast and undamaged.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I was looking for

Pros: I decided after all these years to build a real system, receiver, speakers, turntable and HD TV. This unit is just fantastic. More than I expected and likely more than I will ever use. Still learning how to use all features. Primarily looking for unit that would handle my turntable and this is perfect, sound is awesome.

Cons: Will take me a while to figure out all the features.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product for Starters (when priced right)

Pros: I have been waiting ten months to write this review just so that I could prove I have played around with it thoroughly. I purchased this receiver for under $290 (with a coupon) back in June 2013. I believe that is a fantastic price for a starter receiver. I will purchase a 7.1 or 7.2 receiver from Yamaha when I upgrade to the next. I plan for this to last several years as I have not yet had any problems with this receiver.

I have had absolutely no problems with Yamaha. When I had to contact their customer service, they were well trained and very helpful. It comforts me that companies still hire helpful people that communicate clearly.

As for the receiver:

The Yamaha app is FANTASTIC! I absolutely love the convenience of an app with an on screen volume wheel for quick adjustment. I have only rarely had problems playing music from my phone, but this is more likely a problem with my router than the receiver. The app also allows you to utilize any music stored on the phone and allows you to quickly create playlists. The app is well developed to pause, play, and skip songs with 2 swipes and a click.

The receiver performs without flaw when updated properly. The option of needing to buy an adapter for wi-fi connection is inconvenient and pricey. I plug it in through a power-line adapter and have had no problems. The connections on the back of the unit are pretty standard with no special differences.

YPAO! What a GREAT feature! I lived in several dorms and the auto configuration makes my speakers sound great in any room size or shape. The auto configuration did require me to up the bass a bit, but that is just the way I like it. I was afraid to connect Bose speakers (301 Direct Reflect) to this system as Bose only really sounds good with a Bose receiver, but the YPAO makes it easy to make the speakers sound as if they were set up professionlly. As a side note, my center speaker is a Kilpsch C-20 and I have two small rear Bose surround speakers that sound decent.

I have watched too many movies on this system and I have to admit that it really is a decent set-up. I have not stopped shopping for a better set-up since purchasing this and I have not found anything significantly better that is a 5.1 system.

Cons: Not having a built in Wi-Fi hookup in a wireless age has been the most inconvenient, but as stated earlier, I solved this with Ethernet over power-line adapters. (about $20 on newegg on-sale)

Up scaling is a joke. There was absolutely no difference in video quality and you would do better to upgrade your movie collection anyways. No, I do not understand the science behind up-scaling other than digital computation and pixel averaging. This should not be a selling point for the product.

The on screen display reminds me of the Super Nintendo or the first GUI operating systems. It is blocky and old looking. This is not a problem but shiny things tend to grab attention more.

Other Thoughts: This is a great beginner system product, but I will definitely upgrade to the 7.1 or 7.2 Yamaha receivers when it is most economically viable. I love the product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a start-up system with a set of random speakers (like mine.)

I am a beginner as far as audio configuration goes. This product is really user-friendly and sounds FANTASTIC, just like a movie theater at home! It also has enough configurations for intermediate to advanced users. I have not regretted buying this receiver. I am VERY satisfied.

Pros: Very easy to use, sounds great, has more connectivity than you'll ever need at this price point. I like that it's not restricted to HDMI-only.

The "scene" buttons are really handy, especially if you have HDMI components that can receive remote commands (CEC). I've set up my PS3 and Sony Bravia XBR9 to turn on when using the "BD/DVD" scene. Perhaps the only drawback is that the cats sometimes step on the remote and turn on the TV by accident. Supports 24 Hz playback from my PS3 to the TV.

The Android/iPhone controller app is very nice! Lets you choose the DSP modes, inputs and such. Most useful when using the Network Radio feature, to select one of the bazillion available stations.

Has the option to select a different analog or digital audio input to replace the audio on an HDMI stream. Invaluable when you connect a laptop/PC using a DVI to HDMI cable, and have the laptop audio brought in on one of the analog stereo inputs.

YPAO is super easy to use. Plug in the included mic, position it near the listening location, and press "start".

The pass-through to the TV is very handy, for when I want to watch some TV without needing to turn on the amplifier.

Airplay audio is nice and easy to use. Works well with the girlfriend's Macbook Pro and iPhone. No video support though.

Cons: The on-screen UI looks very dated. The UI is not resolution-independent, and is simply displayed 1:1. This means that the menus look large when overlaid on a 480i stream, and tiny at 1080p. In all modes, the UI is not as slick as you'd expect from a 2013-era piece of electronics. Having said that, it is functional, and gets the job done. Most of the time, I prefer to use the Android control app instead.

The Android app doesn't take advantage of a tablet screen. It's optimized for phones. Not sure if the iPad version is the same (I don't own one).

The Pandora support is nice, but the setup process is quite tedious. I like that you can set up more than one profile. Would have been nicer if you could select those profiles with the TV turned off (with the remote, or with the iPhone app)

I'm completely puzzled why you need to create a login on some Yamaha website before the Network Radio will remember favorites.

The remote control is very cluttered, lots of little tiny buttons. Thankfully, the volume buttons are large. When sending commands to my PS3 (menu navigation), the remote is laggy. The PS3 remote feels a lot snappier.

Other Thoughts: Bought to replace an old Onkyo that had no HDMI support. I am driving a Polk Audio Monitor 45 front, CS2 center and TSi-100 rears.

Haven't tested the MHL functionality, since I don't have an appropriate cable.

Wish it supported Bluetooth audio streaming.

The girlfriend finds it very easy to use. The scene buttons and iPhone remote play a large role. Yamaha has stumbled on something great here.
