The Western Digital Scorpio (WD800UE) 80GB hard drive delivers best-in-class performance with lower power needs when compared to other notebook drives. You'll get the quietest 2.5-inch drive on the market with real-time data protection technology to care for your records, games and pictures. This compact drive, with a 2MB cache buffer, rotates at a speed of 5400 RPM, but with a power curve of a 4200RPM drive. Its average seek time is only 12ms and average latency is 5.5ms.

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate of up to 100MB/sec, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off. This is a full-featured drive in a tiny package, and a great offering from Western Digital!

  • newegg Ultra ATA 100 (ATA-6) Interface The Ultra ATA 100 interface provides up to 100 MB/s throughput for fast data transfer.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Scorpio drives to achieve industry-leading shock protection specs.

5 out of 5 eggsFeel the sting of the Scorpio..

Pros: It fits the laptop, it's got enough capacity, it's WD. eNuf said

Cons: It wasn't free.. but seriously at only 5400RPM I would have rather paid 10 less.

Other Thoughts: I've spent over 6k with newegg.com in 2007 alone. They need to establish business relations accounts.

4 out of 5 eggsSmall Hickup

Pros: Great price, I prefer Western Digital drives. I do tech support and have replace many other brand drives with WD HDDs with great success.

Cons: I installed this one in an external drive inclosure and it did not work at first. I had to partition and format using a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB adapter then when I put it back in the external enclosure it worked fine.

Other Thoughts: I have not used it much since then so I will update later if I have any further issues.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Its a laptop hard drive, works in an RCA Lyra rd2780, until you spill monster into it, then it works in a nifty external casing

Cons: I always like things cheaper

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great bang for the buck. Purchased several, very few issues.

Cons: I've used around 70 of these, out of that 2 were DOA. WD promptly replaced them with a "recertified" drive. Other than that, no problems at all.

2 out of 5 eggsThe Jury is still out

Pros: Price was ok, 2.5 foot print seemed convenient for backpacks and as a laptop companion. I have been a WD loyalist. Not sure I should remain.

Cons: Drive died in less than 2 months. Although WD's support is good, my daughter still lost a lot of data she was counting on.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive and a Bytecc external enclosure case for my daughter attending college. It was a Christmas gift (only 2 months old). She brings it home and says it only clicks and is no longer recognized. My tests and the WD windows diagnostic tool validate the same. My initial thoughts were to purchase a 3.5 inch drive and enclosure, thinking that this (2.5 portable drive and enclosure) technology may not be mature enough and I would certainly get more for the money. I chose based on less weight and most portable, hope I wasn’t right? I have RMA’d the drive to western digital.

5 out of 5 eggsCLICKING!!!

Pros: Started out perfect, still perfect as far as data is concerned etc.

Cons: CLICKING appeared 3 weeks into ownership. Attempted to update (Check WD website, re: clicking scorpio) and still no good. The compressed file WD provides is no good, and computer will not boot from the floppy w files. If they have posts intheir FAQ regarding this, than obviously its a more widespread issue.

Other Thoughts: WD states that the clicking comes from the drive going into power save standby mode, for the wrong reasons... I hope the clicking isnt anything mechanical that would inhibit the drives performance / integrity. Also, when shutting down, the drive just "shispers" out of breath, as if disconnected abruptly (as in unpluggin USB enclosure at the wrong time...) I wonder what the longterm effects are of this "shutdown" trusted in WD for years. What is going on? RMA? replacement only form NEWEGG, same issue?

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent HD's for OEMver

Pros: You can expect high dependability on these OEM drives. Used one on the laptop and the external as backup with bounceback. Both are running Great!

Cons: Newegg Product quote: "rotates at a speed of 5400 RPM, but with a power curve of a 4200RPM drive."
POWER CURVE means: the experience on performance literally feels like the drives are running at 4200rpm, I kid you not!

Other Thoughts: You can't beat the price/perf. for 80gig storage. I owned a previous 80 gig from a overseas manufacturer and it only lasted a couple years, sooo, a great price helps total cost of ownership issues, i.e., if these break soon, they were still a lot less than 6x this price level.

2 out of 5 eggsCould be better

Pros: Good price, great performance

Cons: Caused my compaq presario 2100US to stall at bootup between POST and WinXP logo indefinately. Had to smack the area of the laptop where the hard drive was (with power off) to get it to snap out of it. Hard drive completely failed to boot after a month or 2 of use.

Other Thoughts: I have normally had good luck with WD, but I am hoping this is not normal for this hard drive. I know my laptop's not at fault here tho.

At any rate, if the replacement drive from WD doesn't work better I will give a seagate drive a try.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Pleased

Pros: This drive installed in no time. It is very quiet and access time is very fast. :)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I do not have the strange idle noise on my drive, that another reviewer mentioned. Mine is quiet all the time :)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!!!

Pros: Faster 2X to 3X than factory drive (SiSoft benched at 30mbs/9ms seek

Old oem IBM Travelstar 20mb/4200rpm/2mb ata is 16mbs/19ms seek--if old one was 1mb cache would be 10mbs/19ms

Quieter than a pin drop.

Low Temp,(48c, after stressing of benchmark)seems to be low power usage better battery life.

Computer now boots in about half the time, old HD was LOUD, nibbling and booting with crackling, this one whispers and you can't even hear it. My old Dell is very fast now, no need for the new laptop I was planning.

Very easy install, pop out old drive, (reuse adapter) pop it back in with 4 screws, 5 min total, XP Pro formatted and loaded in about an hour.

Cons: Didn't get mine at Newegg, needed to replace right away, paid more at BBox store. :(

NONE, no "clicking complaints by other reviewers, etc."

Other Thoughts: Dell Latitude C810 PIII 1.13mhz- 384mb mem running XP Pro. With the exception of lost data/files when old HD puked...I am now actually GLAD it did!! It's like a new laptop, VERY HAPPY with this hard drive. I had sworn by WD several years back but recently got away as I thought they had slipped behind in perf/value/quality to other brands but, in the past month I have purchased 2 WD's, this and a 320gb Sata for my Media Center PC build, both are excellent, in every respect. They are back on top IMO: I am back on board with Western Digital as my brand of choice. You will love this drive, buy it now.
