5 out of 5 eggsGood Hard Drive

Pros: This has been a good hard drive for a budget build 11 months ago. I chose it because of the 5Yr warrenty and the price at the time. The customer does not do photo editing or anything that would require a really large hard drive. His old PC had an 80GB PATA drive. We used a budget MOBO also, the Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L. Still available from NewEgg.

Cons: Non at this time

Other Thoughts: At the time the price/size ratio seemed to work for me, and I knew I wanted a 5YR warrenty.
The price has increased and now I would probably choose the WD6401AALS - 640GB at the SAME price (today) as the WD2502ABYS - 250 GB, seems like a no-brainer to me. Both are warrented for 5 years.

Even at 250GB we partitoned the drive. His O/S is Windows XP and it lives on the first partition - 80GB. The second partition is for DATA, and the third is for Acronis Disk Image of the C: (first partition). If he gets hit with a virus, he can just restore from the Image and be on his way. He does not have data of any great value, so no real need to backup to off-line storage.
The machine was built to surf the Internet, email, social networking. That's all they do.

5 out of 5 eggsGet One!

Pros: It works. I was sifting through my end of the year stuff, Newegg order history included, and saw that I purchased one of these drives 16 months ago. I'm ready to type my review now. It rocks. :)

It has been running in a RAID 1 array since the day I installed it with no problems. I do not run my machines 24/7, more like 12/5.

I have read other reviews griping about 'noisy'. Noisy is relative to me. I have two case fans and the CPU fan running in the same case. I can't hear a whisper from the HDD's. It has performed consistently and reliably for me. (Please don't jinx me please don't jinx me please don't jinx me knocks on wood.) :)

As long as WD sells these, I'll continue to buy them. I would recommend them to others too.

Cons: None that I have found yet.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P rev 1.6
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750@ 2.67 GHz
Zalman 750 gram copper finned air cooler
4 GBs of Kingston KVR800D2N5/1G DDR2 800

250 GB drives in RAID 1
Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS
SilverStone Strider SST 600 Watt Modular PS
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit

All running stock. :)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives

Pros: Very quiet and very fast. Single platter. Made for RAID. Newegg has stepped up their shipping practice on drives as I bought four of these and they came in part of a foam hard drive support that was probably sent to them in a ten pack format. Perfect. Four drives reports 935mb.

Cons: None, no errors reported.

Other Thoughts: ATTO Becnhmark, 4 drives in RAID 0:
All reads/writes over over 2mb = 320mb/sec
Max READ = 402mb/sec - Max WRITE = 389mb/sec
Supercache 4.0 reads these at over 4gb/sec.. Yes, 4GB/sec

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid Reliable Drive

Pros: These drives are fast, quiet and last. I like running my OS on the smallest drive, then store all the garbage
on extra 1 g drives.
I only run it as a single OS drive (ASUS M4N82-deluxe) and wish I had ran 2 of them in raid 0. The drive has been running continuously for over 15 months now, I rarely turn the computer off.
Never had a problem.

Cons: NOT a complaint but I would like to see a 32 mb cache version. I would buy two in a heart beat and raid 0 them.

5 out of 5 eggsNice HDD

Pros: This hard drive has not given me any problems for 6 months i've had this computer. I'm using it as my primary drive for my os. Plenty of space for games, music, pictures, whatever you want. It's quite too even on start up I don't hear anything except for the fans in my case.

Cons: None so far WD makes very nice HDD will buy from them again. Unlike seagate :(.

Other Thoughts: Using this with my Core i5 system its a very nice hard drive you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggs5-Month Update

Pros: Quick update on a review that I wrote some time ago on these drives. I have two of these RE3 ABYS models running separately in a low-power desktop, with two more on the way. The drives have seen non-stop use since they were installed in the beginning of March, one of which runs my OS and the other primarily for archiving/replaying video files burned from DVD and Blu-Ray. Though I am not using them in RAID, they have not missed a beat yet (knock on wood!) and continue to operate wonderfully. Still highly recommended.

Cons: Though I have an 80mm fan centered on them, operating temperatures (when in heavy use) are between 40 and 45 degrees centigrade. Though these temperatures don't quite fit the thermal profile I had in mind for this build, I have yet to see the temperatures adversely effect performance or, to this point, longevity.

Other Thoughts: HDTune Pro 4.5 indicates the following:
Max Read: 112 MB/s, Min Read: 55.9 MB/s, Average Read: 93 MB/s, Access Time: 12.3ms, Burst Rate: 165 MB/s.

5 out of 5 eggsBest drive purchase ever.

Pros: Very quiet and very fast in RAID 0, I get an avg of 180mb/sec in hdtune. Even as a single drive its still faster (about 90mbs) than my old caviar black w/32mb cache which only gets about 76mbs.

This is also a single platter drive, which lends to the reliability & longevity.

No reason not to buy this drive! Especially if you want a reliable, cheap & very fast RAID setup.

Cons: Only available in a 16mb cache, but I knew that already.

Other Thoughts: Sorry, didn't buy from newegg due to their lack luster drive packaging. Picked them up from ZZF. They pack them in a foam container surrounded by packing peanuts in a box, doesn't get any safer than this.

1 out of 5 eggsBetter off getting one alive!!!

Pros: Recieved Quickly and now getting a larger capacity and better HDD.

Cons: DOA Waiting for new one to arrive in the mail.

Other Thoughts: I wish they would test them before sending them out to the public.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy

Pros: Have two of these drives running simultaneously in a low-power machine, one for the OS and the other for data backup. Average sequential write measured with HD Tune was 94mbps with burst speeds around 175mbps. I would certainly use these drives again; the 5-year warranty doesn't hurt either.

Cons: Operating temps a bit high for my tastes, but with decent airflow it shouldn't be a problem.
