4 out of 5 eggsSolid so far

Pros: I was more and more running into a need for a solid performer Windows 7 box. After I compared the costs of retail Win7 licenses with refurbished Win7 boxes, the numbers were compelling: buy a refurb. Newegg had none of the 80GB units remaining, so I paid extra for a 3GHz/4GB/500GB box. The unit arrived quickly, well-packed and intact.

A USB keyboard and mouse were included. Looked new.

Initial inspection was encouraging: just a few scratches on the sides and front panel. I noted that the optical drive was read-only, not read-write as shown on Newegg's web site. One of the side panels is the "access panel", easily removable with the press of two buttons. The interior was dusty, a few largish dust bunnies were in evidence. I carefully brushed aside the bulk of the dust. I noted that two different brands of DRAM were used. The power supply and optical drive swung away on their respective pivoting frames, exposing the remainder of the motherboard and the hard drive (as advertised, 500GB).

The quality of the motherboard was good Chinese 2008 level. I saw no signs of rework. All electrolytic capacitors looked intact from above. The CPU heatsink was impressive.

Initial powerup and testing
Windows 7 64bit installed quickly. The system manufacturer was listed as Metro Business Systems, of Stamford CT. Required an hour or so to perform 98 of 100 "Important Updates". I ran a SMART test on the WD hard drive; showed 34000 POH, about right for a 5 year-old computer. Windows performance score was a bit disappointing, at 3.5; graphics was the limiting factor.

HP has an "Insight Diagnostics" iso available. I ran the Complete Test. Took five hours, due almost entirely to the 500GB hard drive. Outcome: all tests passed.

Cons: Documentation was sparse; just a sheet explaining how to select the Windows 7 install program.

No media included.

The read-only DVD is a minor disappointment (Newegg: Fix your web page!).

Other Thoughts: Conclusion
This unit fits my mission profile: hosting software-defined radio peripherals, debugging microcontroller firmware via JTAG and SPI. I would have preferred to get both 32bit and 64bit media; time will tell if being stuck at 64bits is an operational limitation. Newegg's pricing is fair; delivery is timely.

Pros: Awesome Prices, Great speed, smooth running, and quiet too.

Cons: Zero negatives so far (not utilized as gaming PC)

Other Thoughts: Note: you choose what additional software to install.
