4 out of 5 eggsQuality outdoor day/night network Camera

Pros: Solid design; quality construction using material that will stand up to the elements. The fragile electronics inside are well protected, even the memory card, as it is installation requires opening up the protective cylinder casing, accomplished by simply unscrewing the camera cover from the base. It took a minute to locate the slot for the memory card; ended up referring to the installation guide, it’s safely ‘hidden’ in just the right spot inside the camera. Excellent placement considering the type of data it’s recording.

While it’s nowhere near -12 degrees where I live, and I’m not about to throw the camera in my freezer, it has dropped into the mid 20’s a few nights the past couple of weeks, in between days of constant rain. Inclement weather hasn’t seemed to phase the camera. How long term exposure to extreme weather conditions will affect the device, I can only guess.

There are four web browsers D-Link says you can choose from to access the utility application, where you have control over a multitude of configuration settings, features, options, and such. This is where you fine tune the camera’s true capabilities. I used IE 11 and the latest version of Chrome. Both were somewhat problematic, but aside from one unresolved issue, both allowed almost complete access to the camera via web-based configuration, both locally (192.168.1.xxx or what have you) and through the mydlink website. The mobile mydlink app allows you to manage and view your camera on an Android, iphone or ipad device as well.

You may just want to keep it simple, install the camera, turn it on, and have a monitor somewhere at work or home that you can keep an eye on whenever you wish. But if you’re looking for more, the 7010L delivers. Three video formats to choose from, all three configurable, allowing you to change the video quality and transmission rates as you see fit. I didn’t record video onto a MicroSD memory card, as I didn’t have one available, but setting up motion detection and recording video or snapshots to my HDD was easy. You can also have it send email alerts whenever MD is activated, and e-mail snapshots as well. and event management supports up to 5 SMTP and FTP servers!
Bottom line: High quality, weather resistant, IR IRC filter low light (worked in nearly pitch black conditions for me) day and night outdoor HD security camera. DI/DO connection included, useful for connecting an alarm for example.

Cons: Initially I had some trouble accessing the camera via IE 11. Chrome didn’t have a problem. Was able to fix the issue with IE 11, which had to do with Active X not allowing the connection.

I’m able to use Chrome for everything EXCEPT the ePZT controls. A small window pops up with and error message stating this operation is available only when using IE. Um, ok. I just double checked… the exact message says “Zoom In/Out only can be used by IE”. I’ll have to do some research and see if anyone or D-Link has a solution to this already, or that they’re at least working on it, assuming it’s not just my PC that’s causing it.

Price. Yes, the camera has a ton of features that are easily configurable and powerful enough to be taken seriously as a security camera, not just some novelty network cam. But it’s still a bit expensive for a single camera I think. This is the sole reason I’m unable to give it 5 stars. There are three different prices at Newegg for this specific model (DCS-7010L), ranging from $275 (the product page for the one I have), to $366 and another at $395 (as of this writing). If this was over $350, I would give it no more than 2 stars, far overpriced. Drop it to $200 or less, and we have a 5 star product.

Other Thoughts: Almost forgot, supports POE, has 2 way audio and standard power adapter for those of us currently lacking a means of supplying POE. The cabling is routed out the back of the camera, where it is hidden behind the mounting bracket, allowing anyone to give it that 'professional' installation look.

4 out of 5 eggsEggXpert Review - D-Link DCS 7010

Pros: The mobile app (Android) worked wonderfully to view while away from the computer. You're limited to the screen size of your phone, however, but you still have the option to take a screenshot. Otherwise, since it's a cloud camera, you can access it from any internet-connected device. The mobile app supports two-way audio functions as well.

Great HD resolution is clear and precise.

Solid construction; This camera feels very, very sturdy. Even the metal mounting bracket is pretty thick. It's not just cheap plastic filled with electronics.

All mounting hardware is included, even drywall anchors if they are needed.

Motion detection with ability to take snapshots and send email alerts.

Night mode works well, and the 30ft estimate is about right; That's it though. Even at 30ft you can't tell a whole lot, but you can see movement.

Cons: There is an audio delay when using two-way communication, both to and from the unit. However, it is only a second or two, so it's not a terrible delay.

The night mode seems a little too sensitive, as it will activate even when there's plenty of light, taking it from the color day-mode to black and white night-mode. This can be seen as positive though, as you will always be able to see, even if it is in black and white.

Advanced options ONLY works properly in Internet Explorer. I tested using Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer, and IE is the only one that is really usable.

I can't find the MicroSD card slot. No, seriously: WHERE IS IT? There's nothing in the instructions relating to SD card, and no visible slot on the camera itself OR on any of it's connections.

The included CAT 5 cable is laughably short, but at least the connections from the back of the camera are kind of long.

Other Thoughts: One thing is for sure, you will need a proffessional to install this for you if you lack the skills and knowledge to do so yourself, especially if you plan on using it outside and there isn't an existing camera location. The camera is weatherproof, but it still needs power and a network connection, which need to be in a dry location.

You can designate motion-detection areas as well as schedule times for it to monitor those areas for movement, from there it can take a snapshot automatically and send you an email alert so you can monitor the situation, if you so choose.

There are two methods for viewing online from PC; One is the basic, easy to use cloud stream that the mobile app shares the functionality of, including taking snapshots and using 2-way communication. Then there's the advanced options, which requires you to log in as an admin with the password you set up. This allows many fine-tuning options and scheduling for motion detection and events such as email alerts.

I can't verify if this camera stops working in very cold conditions, as where I live it never gets too cold, maybe a few days below freezing in the heart of winter, but that's usually it.

This is still a great outdoor surveillance camera that offers outstanding picture quality, but I suppose you should be wary if you live in an area that gets very cold during the winter and plan on using it outdoors.

Pros: Nice looking camera, aluminum housing.

Cons: Stops working as soon as it gets cold out (-5°C)

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't buy if you are using it outdoors.

2 out of 5 eggsLocal Viewing, Sort of...

Pros: Camera is easy to set up in a local-only mode. IR quality is good. Viewable from browser (tested Firefox and IE), and from 1 of the Android Apps (MyDlink Lite)...see below for problems with other apps.

Gave it two eggs for limited usability.

Cons: Summary of two major problems:

1. The DCS-7010L auto-installer seems to have major (insurmountable for me) problems (as compared to the DCS-932L).

2. The MyDlink+ Android app, useful for viewing more than one camera at a time, and taking snapshots, won't work if a camera cannot complete the auto-installer function.

Details:

Spent approximately 8 hours in total troubleshooting issues with the MyDlink+ Android application, since it would not recognize my DCS-7010L (as compared to the MyDlink Lite app which works fine)

Troubleshot with DLink business support and the troubleshooter became frustrated with my lack of progress. The root cause seems to be that the DLink installation software absolutely will not connect the camera to my MyDlink account, which it needs to do in order to use the MyDlink+ app. The DCS-932L, which I own is on the same network and goes through this process just fine. However, if I block the cameras from Internet access, the MyDlink+ app will refuse to see the DCS-932L, event the MyDlink Lite app continues to work just fine. The problem is, MyDlink+ gives you multiple camera views with the ability to take screenshots, while the free app (MyLink+) does not.

Also, the troubleshooter would not give me the ports that cameras use to connect outbound to DLink. When I explained to allow the cameras to connect outbound without restriction is a bad security practice, I was still told that they won't give that information out, so they insist you open up the camera to all IP outbound. Also, they will not release a list of the MyDlink servers that the cameras try to connect to, so you cannot limit what they can attach to outbound.

Other Thoughts: The requirement for the cameras to access DLink's servers even if the end-user desires to use them in stand-alone (no Internet connection) mode, seems a bit intrusive and unnecessary, to say the least.

It's important to point out that these cameras can be connected to and configured without the use of the auto-installer. The auto-installer is apparently used just to register the cameras with Dlink and support the remote usability functions.
