Raspberry Pi 83-14421 Computer - Model B (512M RAM)

The Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It's a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing, and games, as well as plays high-definition video.

The design is based around a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC, which includes an ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU, and 512 Megabytes of RAM. This revision 2.0 board features two mounting holes for easy installation, a built-in reset circuit, and can be powered via the USB data ports. The design does not include a built-in hard disk or solid-state drive, instead relying on an SD card (not included) for booting and long-term storage. The Raspberry Pi is intended to run Linux kernel based operating systems.

Features:

• Broadcom BCM2835 700MHz ARM1176JZFS processor with FPU and Videocore 4 GPU

• GPU provides Open GL ES 2.0, hardware-accelerated OpenVG, and 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode, GPU is capable of 1Gpixel/s, 1.5Gtexel/s or 24GFLOPs with texture filtering and DMA infrastructure

• 512MB RAM

• Additional specs: 10/100 BaseT Ethernet, HDMI, (2) USB 2.0, RCA video, SD card socket, Powered from microUSB socket, 3.5 mm audio out jack, boots from SD card, Size: 85.6 x 56 x 21 mm

• Model B Revision 2.0 Board-only (no SD card, case, or cables)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat concept!

Pros: Purpose built system on chip that was designed and priced to meet needs more than wants. This is a great device for tinkering in different fields like programming, networking, robotics, etc.

You can turn this into a small server due in large part due to the entire Debian Wheezy official repository being compiled for Raspberry Pi. Between that git there is a plethora of software for this device.

Cons: Hearing people complain about the same things they say this is lacking, second nic, dual core, nics sharing usb bus. Basically all of the things that would price this out of reach for most of it's intended consumer base.

The device its self has served me well so far. One must remember, this was intended for children's education, anything that it can do in the hobbist / tinkerer realm is gravy.

Other Thoughts: I'll probably buy a couple more soon for some projects, turn one into a wireless repeater, dedicate another to being a transparent squid proxy / vpn.

Also I'd like to take two of them and see if I can set up a samba4 active directory domain for my apartment, complete with redundant dns, dhcp.

5 out of 5 eggsAppears well designed

Pros: Connectors seem to be located for easy connection once the device is embedded. Since I'm in an evaluation phase, bench testing, it wouldn't matter now, but I can easily picture how to mount the board for several possible projects which it may replace the little ATOM based mini-ITX boards I use for low volume builds (mostly volume is one).

Cons: Haven't hit any to date

Other Thoughts: Raspberry Pi and Arduino might agree on some form of expansion boards which would work on either.

4 out of 5 eggsRasp PI

Pros: Cheap price, Interesting Possibilities. Size Lends itself to many applications and lots of OS possibilities.

Cons: Limit of 500 megs of ram may be an issue in the future but does not seem to be a problem at this time.

Other Thoughts: So many possibilities the more research I do. I made an electronic picture frame from an old laptop screen and it works well but I may take it apart to experiment with other applications.

5 out of 5 eggsraspberry

Pros: kinda slow, but what can you expect. I really like it for a media server, gets funky on boot sometimes, I believe it is the case letting it get hot it is fun to mess with though... buy you one and see

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: its under 50 dollars try it out....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little ARM computer!

Pros: Works well and is relatively easy to use once you have all the parts it needs.
preset overclock profiles make it too easy to kick it up a notch.
takes very little electricity to run.

Cons: doesn't come with the power chord, but any micro USB seems to work.
Needs an SD Card or WILL NOT RUN.

Other Thoughts: Works very well for what I wanted it to do, run a minecraft server using as little power as possible, I was able to have 3 players online before any hint of lag.

5 out of 5 eggsOH MAN

Pros: Just got it in the mail, SD card is getting here after the weekend so such excitement, much impatience, wow.
I actually expected the SD card to arriave first because this wasn't sold by newegg, so I am pleasantly surprised.
The board feels incredibly sturdy, although I'm not going to try to see if it would survive a waist-high drop or anything.

Cons: Doesn't come with a power chord, but a micro usb should work, my phone power chord should work then, I just need to wait for that SD card cuz it won't post without it..

Other Thoughts: looks so cool and inexpensive.

4 out of 5 eggs2 day ship is really 7 day!

Pros: I got a Pi! Haven't built it yet but I'm excited. I think I will be making a case out of an old film camera....

Cons: Selected to go for the extra charge for the 2 day shipping, purchased 3 on a Wednesday (late) received a shipped on Friday email. In my hands on Wednesday the following week. Might as well call it "two days shy of 2 week" shipping!

Other Thoughts: Really really upset about the 2 day thing. I figure packed and out on Friday I could live with, I get the 'no Sat or Sun' but then I should have it in hands by Monday or at the most Tuesday. It's a screwing to say 2 day.

5 out of 5 eggsRPI goodness

Pros: I have several of these for various technical projects. Ham radio, XMPP chat server, etc. They are great little computers that use less power than normal desktop ATX computers.

For unix applications, they are no brainer.

Cons: The SDCARD slots require the card to stick out.
