Flirc learns from any remote control, not caring about different vendor protocols. Just walk through the super simple setup - pairing individual remote buttons with 'Media Centre Buttons' and you're done. It's basically a universal IR receiver, so can be used with any remote you choose, old, new or Universal! The best part about FLIRC is that it can be used to mimic a keyboard so every media center application understands it without any drivers. FLIRC runs across all platforms, Mac, Linux, and Windows.

Want to use your remote control with an XBOX or Playstation? No problem. Pair flirc on a PC, and use flirc on any USB device without any additional software, it just works.

Don't bother using another remote control for your raspberry pi, flirc allows you to use your same television remote and is such a perfect companion for the pi, that we started selling them and even offer them together at a discount. Program the flirc on a PC, and use it on the pi without any additional software. Or download the XBMC plugin, which also runs on the pi, and pair your remote in just a few simple steps.

There are a number of firmware updates that will enhance the future usage of flirc, and we have the best community, check out our forums for useful tips and tricks.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Peasey

Pros: It works
It is easy to program
Works with any remote

Cons: Will not work as an off and on switch.

Other Thoughts: Being a USB device, you cannot turn on and off the device, with out doing some specialized wiring to your 24 pin power connector. I am not willing to do this. The dongle is small, and I hid it under the HTPC chassis (it has feet).

I used a universal remote.

It will shut the computer down to a S3 suspended state, but not any lower.

Once you get it, go to the manufacture's website, download the drivers. You can then program it.

Everything worked the first time. About 10 minutes to set it up for XMBC.

5 out of 5 eggsIf you think you might want this, you do

Pros: Tiny, easy-to-open packaging

Super simple configuration

Well supported on Linux (the FLIRC people maintain their own apt repository so you can add it to your repo lists and get automatic updates, install in a harmonious way)

Works great even with very dumb one-device remotes; you can reuse any remote that doesn't also affect your TV, etc. or buy whatever one you like

Way cheaper than USB CEC solutions, bluetooth devices or fancy remotes

Sends generic keypresses so you can use it with any application you want, including XBMC, Windows Media Center, simple computer games, or even at a console

Programming is stored on the firmware; program it once and use it anywhere

Good receiver, you don't have to be too precise about where you point your remote

Can link remote buttons to multiple-key combos

Cons: None. This device is really great and it's cheap enough that you seriously might as well just try it

Other Thoughts: The product came in minimal packaging (a small disposable plastic case around the dongle, no tools required to open it), and took next to no time to get set up. The thing didn't come with a manual (just an insert smaller than an index card) and didn't really need one! Their configuration utility really is easy to use, and it takes just seconds. The utility also comes with a pretty powerful command-line tool for inspecting and configuring the device (status, firmware version, settings, etc.).

5 out of 5 eggsFLIRC is what you want. Stop looking

Pros: Small
Easy setup
Not even a hint of an issue so far
Great free app on the FLIRC site that allows you to customize your remote. Again, very easy.
I like the clear shell it's in.
Flawless so far.
Great distance (Mine works fine at ~15 feet, and my living room is too small to try it any further)

Cons: Nothing.

Other Thoughts: This is used with my Rii i13 4-in-1, and primarily used in XBMC on my HTPC setup.

I cannot say enough good things about this. I've searched for a fairly cheap (<$100) option that meets all my needs. This with my remote met that criteria. This completes my setup, and I've tried several other remotes in the past. I bought this on a whim with my new build and didn't know much about it. I don't know why more people aren't using this.
