4 out of 5 eggsEA2700 Router

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The router works beautifully when fully set up. It meets all of my needs for both a wired and wireless network.

Cons: The set up process was a little different from what I'm used too. You need to use the included cd to set up the router, which is a bit of an issue if you don't have a cd drive. I imagine you can download the needed software from the Linksys website but this adds a little hassle. Another issue was with the Linksys Smart software. For reasons unknown to me, the router would duplicate a device and give it its own mac address. This issue was strangely resolved when i turned off the SSID.

Other Thoughts: It's a great router for those who are looking to enter the Wireless market and don't have the know how to manually set it up. The software pretty much takes care of all that.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Home Router

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Simple setup - just took a few minutes from opening the box to connecting my laptop to the network.

Decent functionality/setup options.

I had no problems with connectivity/signal strength or speed. The router had sufficient signal strength to connect my laptop or phone to the wifi anywhere in my house.

Dual channel 2.4 & 5 GHz is nice and almost a must-have feature these days given how cluttered the 2.4 GHz band can be.

So... easy to set up, plenty of functionality for home use, and sufficient signal strength/speed for home use means this is a solid router option!

Cons: No signal boosting antennas. Not a huge deal since I didn't have a problem with signal strength or speed, but it's worth mentioning - especially if you have a large house, I wonder if you'll have problems.

Price is a little high for what is a basic router with some additional app functionality. I didn't use or nee any of the "smart" apps, so I didn't think the price was justified. -1 egg for being a bit expensive

Other Thoughts: Decent option for a home router. Doubly so if you do see some use for any of their "smart" apps. Recommended.

4 out of 5 eggsLinksys Reliability

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The Linksys EA2700 is part of the latest router series from Cisco Linksys. The Linksys EA series routers are not to much different than the other Linksys E-series routers, other than changes in software, The EA lineup is optimized for "Cisco Connect Cloud" which means you can have remote access and control of a home network from a browser or mobile device. This is a dual-band router, getting up to 300 Mbps on both bands.

Cons: This is the entry model for the EA lineup so it does have a USB port which I would liked to see, and I also did not like the fact that It can not be used in a Vertical position.

Other Thoughts: The Linksys EA2700-NP worked very well in my weeks of testing, as I had no real problems with It disconnecting or slow transfer speed with my Network Attached Storage Devises, which It did actually very well , I was getting my maximum 80 Mbps that I am use too. The EA2700 price point is fair In my opinion, It is very to use and was very easy to set-up, the rage is accessible I had no problem getting all 5 bars at the farthest reach of a 1600 Sq/ft home. For me It is just a basic router with Linksys Reliability.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Family Router

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: High speed (up to 300 + 300Mbps) ,
◦Gigabit Ethernet , IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab
•Ports: 4x 10/100/1000M LAN Ports, 1x 10/100/1000M WAN Port,Frequency Band: Simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz, 4x Internal Antennas@Transmit/Receive: 2 x 2 for 2.4GHz, 2 x 2 for 5GHz
,Linksys SMART Wi-Fi Software: Yes, App Enabled

Cons: no external Antennas, Hard to hang on wall, gigabit connection, power and buttons are at the top of the router so it make it upside down if you Mod a hanger on the wall. Maybe too much control in one person's hand but if you are a concerned father or mom this may be great for you.

Other Thoughts: Modding a hanger is as easy as crimping a small zip tie and fishing it through the air vent in the bottom of the router then using a nail to hang it that way. Maybe great for ultra controlling out of control children on the net while parents are away. The control for this router is open to the owners smart phone commands via Apps that can do most all Parental control functions. but its a great router for 6 or less wireless devices being run all at the same time.

3 out of 5 eggsPersonal Experience tells me to move away from Linksys (YMMV)

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: This device is one of the many new "Smart" routers from Linksys. They have some added functionality/interaction with apps on other mobile devices. Generally this is limited to basic functions such as rebooting the router or making minor settings changes. This can be helpful if you are not near your router or it is mounted in a hard to access location.

Setup is fairly easy, following the setup wizard. The range is acceptable, though through a few walls in my house, I was no longer able to get more than a bar or 2 of signal strength.

Cons: The price is high. I believe Linksys has starting making all of their routers "Smart" routers in order to increase the price for the same level of products they've had the last few years.

The convenience of a few apps does not justify the added cost. The range on this router is lower than several cheaper Asus routers I've tried.

Linksys software is almost always riddled with bugs that they take forever to fix (if they ever do). One of the issues I've had is with the software settings randomly being reset. It appears to be a known issue for a quite a while with multiple Linksys models and there has been no fix. You'd think a "Smart" router would be able to be fixed MORE often, not less often.

Other Thoughts: Having now had a higher end EA5400 and now lower end EA2700, I am convinced that I will no longer be purchasing Linksys for a while. The price keeps going up, but without the quality and performance that should accompany those increases. The software is becoming less user friendly (in my opinion) and more glitchy. I'd much rather they return to a standard web based setup and management with local IP address.

4 out of 5 eggsAbove Average

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Easy set up, interface is simple and user friendly. Low profile design that doesn't shout "look at me" and that is a good thing. The activity lights are also in the back so you do not notice is blinking away out of the corner of your eyes. Mobile app for managing your settings. The router also has parental controls and priority settings.

Cons: Lets start with the interface. You cant communicate with the router by entering a default IP you have to install the provided CD that configured the router for you. The only settings are in the Smart wifi app/web page. The settings are basic to say the least and this might be a plus for user's who are not familiar with advanced router settings. The priority settings give you two options, preferred and normal. I would like more control over these settings.Another issue is the poor range of this router but if you have a decent extender then it's not a issue.

Other Thoughts: For a N600 dual band router with this price range it is a good deal. I will run this router as my main router and see how it grows on me.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Router for Novice

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: This is a good router for a novice as anyone with a little knowledge could set up his/her network using the supplied CD. Range is good for internal antenna. I get a full 5 bars upstairs on both the 2.4 and 5Ghz band. Wi-Fi apps available for managing router, sharing media and files, and monitoring network. I used the setup on the CD because I often get asked by persons with little or no knowledge of routers or wireless about what router to purchase. This is a decent price for a dual band router with the features built in.

Cons: Now that we got past the pros, lets look at the cons if you are an experienced geek. First off, I could not get this router to connect to cable gateway through the web interface. I also constantly got a 502 Bad Gateway error. After trying several times and power cycling my router and gateway, I finally gave up and used the CD. With the CD, I was able to get the router configured and connected to the internet.

Guest Network is turned on by default. It did not allow me to turn off the Guest Network using the setup CD and it did not provide the password for the Guest Network anytime during install. I had to go into the web interface to find the password and to turn off the guest network.

No USB. Most mid range routers now have USB ports. I have gotten used to them and my other routers have 2 USB ports. USB ports come in handy when used as an FTP server and Print Server.

For the price, your are not getting anything special. Just a decent dual band router with some bells and whistle such as Cloud access, apps, and parental controls. Price is kind of high for what you get.

Other Thoughts: Okay, here's the bottom line. I gave this 4 eggs because it is the perfect router for someone who knows little or nothing about setting up a router and wireless. For the novice, this is a 5 egg.

For the experienced user, this router basically gives you the features of a low end dual band router. Someone who likes managing a router through the web interface would probably give this router 3 eggs.

Nothing special and most home experts would never use the as parental control, Wi-Fi apps or setup CD. The web interface is okay, but I prefer finding all my options in a menu rather than clicking on a section menu and looking through pictures or icons.

Bottom line: A Wireless N router with Gigabyte ports, Dual Band, and N600 is a decent but for the price you can find better. On the other hand, it is cheaper than having some squad or big box set up your wireless network. Just about anyone who got past 6th grade can setup this router.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Router I've Ever Used

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Powered on.

Cons: Cloud based setup. Unable to configure router (stuck on "Waiting..."). Cisco/Linksys firmware flash utility unable to flash router. Old DSL modem ran 192.168.1.1, unable to connect the router until it could be configured for a different IP, which it would never let me. Wasted an hour trying to get this unit to behave.

Other Thoughts: I'm a computer technician, I setup routers on a regular basis, I've configured hundreds of routers. I've NEVER had such a poor experience with a router as with this unit. I've used $20 routers that provided a better experience.

3 out of 5 eggsJust not good enough at this price point

This review is from: Linksys EA2700-NP SMART Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless N600 Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The router looks nice and seems well built. It is extremely easy to setup if you are someone who doesn't know a lot about network configuration. Web interface is very smooth and responsive.

When setting up the router, everything is easy to find and the layout on the UI is quite nice.

Product design is nice and it is fairly compact.

The router immediately was able to detect my network setup and start working (for test purposes this was connected to my gigabit switch within my existing network. The switch was setup as "internet provider" if you will.)

I feel like anyone would be able to set this up without issues.

Cons: I'm all for saving trees, but with it kill Linksys to at least include a slip of paper with the default router password?

One of my many gripes is that I was forced to use the CD that came with the router just to get the default admin password for the router. The only disk drive I have around still is a USB portable one. I feel like we've probably gone past the world of setup disks at this point.

The router requires you to sign up with Linksys if you are on the older firmware. After signing up, and then updating the firmware this ceased to be an issue. However, this was just another annoyance that cut into a speedy setup time for someone like me who already knew how to set it up.

This router isn't breaking any records. My internal network speeds were about 250 mbps between computers before the firmware update. This only increased to just a hair over 500 after the update. This is pretty unacceptable considering my Buffalo router is capable of much greater speeds for a lower price point.

As far as internet access goes, I was disappointed. I am running gigabit internet from Google Fiber and the router I have in place as my main router (Buffalo Wireless N Gigabit router) manages around 785mbps up and down speeds on any given day. Putting this router in the same place on the network (at first, I wondered if my switch was slowing it down) yielded only around 400 mbps to the same hosts under speed tests for both up and down.

If I'm paying this much, I expect better.

Another problem is that the wireless range is pitiful. I have my computer setup for a range test as I type this. The computer is 5 feet away from the router and is registering at around 4 out of 5 bars for signal strength. If I take my laptop into the living room (40 ft away through several drywall walls) the signal is down to one bar and cuts in and out. This is after the firmware update which was supposed to resolve the poor range issues. Compare that to the generic GoogleFiber router Wifi (down in a concrete basement) which I can pick up signal outside and my Buffalo router which will allow me to access Wifi out by the street (approx 60 feet away through metal siding exterior). There just isn't an excuse for this performance from a Cisco product.

I will add this as well, I feel like for 100 bucks I should at least get some mounting hardware for wall mounting this router. This, however, was not the case.

Other Thoughts: I think this has the potential to be a good product but it just falls short. Perhaps if it were much cheaper I would have rated it differently. The fact of the matter is that it is over priced for what it can do. I have several routers here at home that are able to perform much better for a lower retail price.

I really expected this router to be good being that it was a Linksys/Cisco product. Unfortunately, this just didn't impress me a whole lot.

I'm also quite surprised that there isn't even one USB port for print server or file storage capabilities.

It's still a really simple router and great for beginners. Just don't expect the range to be stellar if you are in a dwelling bigger than a large apartment. Which I suppose would be good if you are concerned about your neighbor stealing your internet.
