2 out of 5 eggsNot as good as the BlackArmor series!

This review is from: Seagate STDM12000100 12TB Business Storage Windows Server 4-Bay NAS

Pros: Fairly small footprint
12 TB (but not really) - That's a lot of space!
Priced pretty low
Comes with some sort of USM port (great for warming hashbrowns)

Cons: Comes with a stripped down copy of Windows Server 2012
Only realistically provides you around 8TB (if using RAID5)
Requires you connect KVM to configure it
Weighs a TON!!
Huge external power brick with lot's of DIN pins
The iSCSI is "virtual"

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit because I was impressed with the old series of Seagate NAS units that this replaced. The major difference when you move from those up to this unit is that it now ships with this awful, stripped down, and SLOW version of Windows Server 2012 (think "Starter Edition" for Servers). The server OS was not designed to be run on an Atom processor. Seriously.

Because it runs windows, you will have to ignore that this thing can get right onto the network and grab an IP address, because you will need to run through a Welcome to Windows wizard upon firing it up. Have your keyboard, mouse, and monitor ready. And don't steal it from your main PC, because you will want something to do while you wait for this lengthy and unnecessary process to complete. Once you have configured a password for the administrator account and enabled Remote Desktop access, disabled the internal firewall, and muddled through the other horribly placed menus - you can then use it as it was intended - an appliance.

The former models supported iSCSI with a firmware update, and it worked extremely well. The new series also supports iSCSI. But it's "virtual". In other words, you set up your volume first. Then you carve out little file shares from it. To me - this is fake iSCSI and if you want to have different RAID configurations for different slices, prepare to lose your mind performing simple tasks with this. It's Windows folks. Did I mention it runs on an Atom processor?

They should also stop telling people that this is a 12TB appliance. The only way that you could achieve anything near that number would be to run your drives in a RAID-0 (striping, no fault tolerance). And you would be a fool to do that on giant SATA drives.

It performs about how you would expect (poorly). But you don't generally buy one of these for high speed file transfers, you buy them to store a lot of data very cheaply. Bear in mind that inside of this thing are four very large (3TB) hard drives. That's a very low number of spindles for a very large amount of files.

Next time we need another baby NAS, I will be trying a different brand.
