4 out of 5 eggsI Have 5

Pros: Fast, clean UI, firmware updates address issues
FAST SMB and NFS
Can join windows domain

Cons: USB functionality limited, there is a slider in the webUI to adjust, it does not install a usb network adapter like previous versions of lacie products

Other Thoughts: Using these with free ESXi and NFS to create a second datastore via NFS. write times are fast, and windows and linux guest OS's can access VMKD's on LaCie network drive

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working after one day

Pros: Nice design, looks like they put a lot of effort into the management interface. Sturdy all-metal case.

Cons: Stopped responding after a day. Web admin hangs at log in. Shares can't be accessed. The provided network setup utility can't find the box. Tech support is baffled. Fantastic. I think my data is toast.

Other Thoughts: LaCie spent way too much time making this thing look cool, and not nearly enough making sure it would work. Moral: if you need NAS, buy Synology. Everyone else is second rate or worse.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked for 29 days as advertised...

Cons: It died on the 29th day, just stopped working with a blinking light. Contacted L@Cie support, who mailed an AC Adapter, still bad and requested N3w3gg to replace the item with a new one or a refurb from L@Cie. What??? A refurb for something this new??? Contacted N3w3gg, they were considering a "one time" offer since I had documented proof that it died within 30 days and was waiting for shipment of an AC adapter but at the last minute they asked if I had the original box, as if it was a necessity of the device use. Uh, who keeps boxes? For those that passed first grade math, lets think this out, if we kept every box of every item we purchased in order to fulfill a possible future RMA then how many rooms of boxes would we have in our lives??? Mind you, N3w3gg tracks all devices by serial number but uses the technicality of having everything, yes everything, in order to RMA a device. Other companies use the common sense approach of asking for the simple device but N3w3gg wants ...

Other Thoughts: ... the box in order to use a fishing hook to blind side us. Sorry N3w3gg, you lost my long time, many purchases for others respect. A sincere proof that the few extra dollars spent in a local vendor is worth gold when something goes wrong. I'm really getting sick and tired of online companies using the "company policy" as an escape goat for problems. N3w3gg didn't design the drive, but they are a store and a store honors its word. Not try and micro text the technicalities in order to save a $250 return. Hope the "corporate savings" was worth the loss of a reseller.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible power supply & customer support

Pros: Works intermittently, and eSATA has great throughput

Cons: The drive cannot be powered up while connected via eSATA or Windows 7 won't recognize the drive. Power up the drive, connect the eSATA cable, and it *might* work. When it is recognized, it is fast.

However, I have gone through 3 power supplies. The most recent, they refuse to warranty replace and want to sell another (probably refurbished) for $34 + shipping.

I specifically asked if there has been a re-design due to the number of issues with the power supply, and the support staff said no. With only a few months of intermittent use per power supply, this is an expensive external storage option to maintain.

Other Thoughts: I have this drive connected through a surge protector + a UPS with a surge protection fuse. This is the ONLY unit that has had any signs of tempermental behavior in my entire office.

I will NEVER buy another product again.

1 out of 5 eggsSave your time & money!

Pros: Nice design and feature-rich backup software included.

Cons: It doesn't work! I took it out of the box expecting UnP compatibility or at least a simple installation on my network. WRONG! It was assigning itself a static IP that was not within the same domain or subnet as the network (and, before you ask, yes...my router is setup as a DHCP server). I tried to get in touch with LaCie tech support, but a phone call will cost you $14.95 and you are otherwise stuck to going back and forth with their tech support via a blog/forum they setup for your ticket.
