1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: Has the Bowflex name on it. Bought on sale at $30.

Cons: No returns allowed.

Like others have said, it's not as useful as it is advertised to be. After searching for the 60beat software, I found it online, as an .apk file that I could install! I will not say where because the permissions are awful...it gets permission to your camera, contacts, allows it to send messages, and make phone calls without your interaction...except to emergency numbers. The emergency number call would be the only thing useful in those four permissions...like it would call an ambulance if I stop moving and my heart rate stops or is suddenly erratic while out running. Camera? Why would this app need to see my camera or contacts? Ok, this is a con of the "supplied" software, which is not available in the USA, not a con of the hardware...which technically works.

I read another review which said that runtastic pro works with this device...I was leery on purchasing that just to find out it doesn't work with this device, but if it does, then that may be the way to go.

Other Thoughts: Mine does have a c-clip to disconnect the harness... another review said the strap was solid. I thought it was too, but finally found the clip.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None

Cons: Heart rate pickup on chest strap is large and uncomfortable. Heart rate doesn't pick up unless iPod is very close to my chest. Connection to the iPod is flimsy as the device swings freely.

Other Thoughts: Now I know why these were so cheap!! Don't make my mistake.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks alright, needs better software

Pros: Reports heart rate fairly accurately, easy to put on and remove the monitor

Cons: Terrible software. The software recommended for use in the manual isn't actually affiliated in any way with Bowflex. The iPhone software requires a newer version of iOS than my fiancee has on her iPod touch so that's entirely useless to us, and the Android software mysteriously isn't compatible with any of our Android devices (Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC Evo 4G, or rooted Nook Color). Ended up using a "fitness program" called Quentiq, but it only displays the heart rate in tiny numbers at the top of the screen... not terribly useful for monitoring one's heart rate while working out.

Other Thoughts: The monitor apparently uses the "60Beat" protocol, so in theory any app that can read that protocol will work... problem is, there is only one on the Google Play store compatible with any of our devices (why the other is listed as not compatible with a brand new Galaxy S3 in the US is beyond me) and it's not really hot for actually monitoring heart rate. The only one in the Apple App store requires a version of iOS that our iPod Touch can't run, so we're out of luck there too.

2 out of 5 eggsNo recommended Android App

Pros: User changeable batteries
Detachable sensor

Cons: Closed loop strap
Android app no available in U.S.
Bad instructions

Other Thoughts: I'll start with what I like. The battery in the dongle that attaches to your phone is replaceable, as is the battery in the sensor that attaches to the chest strap. I also like that the sensor can be removed from the chest strap so one can easily clean the strap. The sensor also works with my Star Trac S-TRc treadmill so that's a plus.

Now for the things I don't like. The Android app they tell you to install can't be installed in the U.S. You will need to purchase an app that can read this sensor. I bought Runtastic Pro and it worked. Also the chest strap is a closed loop, ie. no clip. You either have to stretch it out over your head and shoulders or step into it to put it on. More of a pain taking off the sweaty thing, yuck! Also the instructions aren't clear on what the 3-position switch on the dongle is for. It has block, A, and B. One would think that is some switch combined with on/off and RF selection. There is, however, no corresponding selection on the sensor, so I don't know. Lastly, the current price is not at all reasonable, but at the sale price of thirty dollars it is.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what is should

Pros: Replaceable battery. Sends to Polar receivers in gym equipment and such. Can send to smartphones.

Cons: The unit is rather bulky compared to the Polar chest strap. The chest belt is not very comfortable. It barely fit around my chest and I am not the biggest person (42"). I don't know how it would work for women.

Other Thoughts: It is a cheaper replacement for the Polar chest band senders. If Polar had replaceable batteries, I would not have considered the Boflex alternative. The design could have been a little smaller to fit under shirts...it sticks out on the front. You get what you pay for.

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid!

Pros: The receiver works with my Polar FT-31 strap

Cons: It has no app for the Android device even thought it is stated on their manual - if I can call the manual a manual.
The iPhone software is pretty bad. It has no way to store workouts and it is very basic.
I can not locate a software that would work to my liking on my Android phone.

Other Thoughts: The receiver is pretty good and it seems to be a multi-band receiver. You can use the switch on the bottom to switch between 3 potions. The manual says very little about the switch. I found that for my Polar FT-31 strap it needs to be in the middle position and for the included strap it need to be on the position farther away from the plug.
Overall, this is a case of what where they thinking!
