Electronic Arts lights the lamp as it builds on the success of their NHL 08 which earned the title of Sports Game of the Year. In addition to the highly acclaimed offensive shooting mechanism of last year's game you can now perform one-handed dekes to play past the defense. For its part, the defense has been bolstered with additional control abilities that let you intercept passes and regaining possession after checking your opponent. Improved physics sends players flying after getting slammed into the boards. And, since that would likely result in a fight in a real game, the fight mechanics have been retooled to let you throw down your stick and throw punches instead.

The new Be a Pro mode is another highlight of the game. Taking inspiration from EA's FIFA and NCAA football titles, you can now strap on the skates as a promising AHL rookie and create every aspect including his style of play from cross-checking defenseman to speedy sniper with your coach expecting different actions based on your position and teamplay.

Dynamic Skill progression improves your skills as your career progresses –a feature that is also featured in Dynasty mode where you build an entire team to championship caliber. Build a Play returns with the ability to design plays that take place across the entire ice rather than just the offensive zone. Online leagues and tournaments await with full six-on-six play with championships held to decide the top team.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: It's hockey, you can't go wrong with the best sport of all time. The game flows well with every minute of it, even when you're losing you have a good time.

Cons: Not free.

Other Thoughts: Looking forward to see what's new in NHL 10.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Sports game

Pros: It's a hockey game, and it's pretty easy to learn but hard to be great at. It's a lot of fun to play competitively. Interface is pretty good, graphics are great in HD, and overall, EA did a pretty good job.

Cons: There are some physics issues EA needs to work out. They have already patched many issues, but there are some issues with goals that still exist (mainly shots from the outside that would be pretty much impossible in real life happening more than once in a game).

Other Thoughts: It's a fun game and EA is continuing to patch it. I think it's a worthwhile buy for sports fans. Even if you don't watch actual hockey regularly, it's a good sports game that involves more engagement than Madden.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Game

Pros: The best hockey game for XBOX 360. The Be A Pro mode is a great addition to the game along with the international teams.

Cons: The gameplay is the same as last year's version. Also, it seems that everyone online knows the same shooting hacks which makes the game not fun to play online.

Other Thoughts: I play Madden and FIFA more often than NHL. Its currently collecting dust at the moment. EA needs to either space out the releases of their sports games better or release them all at the same time. I would save the $60 and not purchased NHL. Its a good game but I never play it.

5 out of 5 eggsFavorite sports game, ever.

Pros: I hadn't played an NHL game since N64 because I loved them and never thought I could get a better game than what I had. This game totally topped it. I love the joystick controls, and most of all, Be a Pro mode. Nothing like getting 5 of your friends online and playing 6 v 6 with everybody controlling their own character. It's an intense game, but even if you're not so familiar with hockey it's a load of fun and easy to learn.

Cons: The free shipping is "egg saver" and if you do not live near a Newegg center you might have a reason to buy a separate shipping option. I stuck with it because I live about an hour and a half from one. Some don't trust DHL, but this time I did.

Other Thoughts: Get your buddies to buy it too.
