3 out of 5 eggsGood e-reader, but locked down and low battery

Pros: It's color, works as a great e-reader, supports apps that connect to my local library for e-book checkout, ergonomic, and lightweight.

Cons: Not very fast, but I don't know if it's supposed to be. Low battery life (about 4-hours between charges). Locked down on B&N's system. The Nook HD has an open Android system, allowing you to use apps from the Google Play store. But then again, it's a color e-book reader, not a tablet computer.

Other Thoughts: This product falls in the middle of liquid ink readers and tablet devices. The unfortunate part of compromise is that no one gets what they want. You don't get the readability of eInk in direct (sun) light, ease on eye strain, and long battery life. You don't also get a great tablet device capable of much more.

If you are looking for a dedicated e-book reader, I suggest e-ink versions of the Nook or competitor device. Or save your money and get the better versions.

5 out of 5 eggsBarns & Noble Nook

Pros: Worked great for me. I ordered this for my wife, but she did not like it- No problem with the nook just too hard for her to read at her age. Asked for refund & they promised it.

Cons: Writing a little small for old eyes

Other Thoughts: Maybe a 9" unit would be better for my wife

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Seller

Pros: Did not keep mdse, but they were very helpful in the return process. The nook was too complicated for my wife to use!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Seller called me to let me know he was issuing a refund. Good communication.

1 out of 5 eggsbad refurbished nook

Pros: None

Cons: Much slower than my other Nook Color. Has screen artifacts and random stalls and stutters. Refurbished products are supposed to be as good as new, but this one is still defective.

5 out of 5 eggsNice price for moderate use with CM7 mod

Pros: I am primarily using it to read ebooks and also to check the news, email and listen to podcasts while on the road. I am glad I don't have to take my laptop on short trips since this is much lighter.

You can install the CM7 mod on an external SD card (I recommend SANDISK branded CLASS 4) so you can dual boot and access the standard Nook ROM if necessary. I use a 32 GB card (which cost me about $20) and very rarely boot to the standard ROM.

Check the XDA developer forums if you need additional help with the mod.

Cons: It does not have GPS or built-in audio input. Without audio input, you cannot make phone calls through the net. It does not have a camera either (but that is a blessing for me since I visit buildings where devices with cameras are prohibited.)

Occasionally I get the 'force close/wait' screen when I first start up an application. If I click on wait, it is then fine. This happens very infrequently to be a nuisance (and it only happens with a couple of apps.) Also, near certain edges and corners, the taps can be a bit tricky. There are some free screen calibration programs which supposedly fix it. Again, this is not a major annoyance.

Other Thoughts: The Nook software is barely adequate and you need to install CM7 mod to get the full potential and access to the Android app stores from google or 'the river one' whose name shall not be spoken here. Installing the mod (aka rooting) is not difficult and google is your friend. The actual mod takes about ten minutes and reading up on it may take another 30 mins or more if you have never done it before.

3 out of 5 eggsNot a good Android device

Pros: The unit I received looked and acts like new. Good battery life as long as you're using it as a Nook (See cons below).

Cons: Yes you can root this thing and it's easy and cheap. But just because you can do something doesn't make it right. What they don't say is that if you install Ice Cream sandwich it's slow and the touch screen often becomes unresponsive. The battery isn't powerful enough to run a rooted android device so battery life is atrocious and the battery drains to the point where the unit won't work in just a few hours even while shut off for no apparent reason. You can overclock the unit but this makes the touch screen become even more unresponsive and the unit often freezes up and has to be rebooted to work. Video is problematic and although it played for a short time under android it froze and then after a reboot froze again. I'm not saying it's fun to learn how to root this device and it's interesting to play aound with it but it's really not powerful enough to make a decent android device.

Other Thoughts: As an e-book reader it's fine. Just don't expect miracles if you root this device.

5 out of 5 eggsDevice was great, but Nook Software ......

Pros: Price/Value
microUSB charging (using a different cable - see comments)
Touch screen is responsive
Screen very bright and readable

Cons: Refurbished box (couldn't really gift it) - not really a con
Though its microUSB cable, its actually a special cable
See comments

Other Thoughts: First off this review is in 2 parts: 1) for the actual refurbished device purchased from Newegg, 2) the actual B&N Nook software

- Despite being labeled a refurb, it was in mint condition (looked like a new unit minus the refurb sticker), except the retail box which was kind of beat up on the outside but had the USB cable and AC adapter included

B&N Nook Software:
- Sucks period
- Couldn't get Cyanogen Mod 7 to dualboot off SD card to work but I can root and install CM7 onto the Nook. However, I couldnt get Google Play to work. Plus I didn't like the fact it does not fully replace the stock Nook ROM but kind of "layer" over it.
- Stock Nook Rom, useless for apps. You can't side load, and B&N apps store is terrible.

Overall: as a refurb device, its great given the price/screen/etc. But unless you know how to root, etc, it may not be worth the trouble.

BTW I went back to the stock ROM (which was a pain to get back to too).

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful tablet with cm7

Pros: Great screen, can put a 32gig microsd to hold your content (the nexus does not have that) so when you do not have cloud access you can use it (try using the cloud on a cruise)

Cons: The power connector is finicky to push in (do it a little sideways). A little slow, but will play movies, games, and kindle. The kindle app will say non responding - just hit wait, it will come up.

5 out of 5 eggsNook Color is one of the best budget tablets out there and here is why-

Pros: Main things this has over the others in this class-

The original Nook Color has a beautiful 1024x600 Capacitive touch screen-better than the 800x480 ones. Using CM7.2, you have full video hardware acceleration so video playback is pretty good.

With Cynogenmod 7.2 you can overclock the cpu to 1.2 ghz. go to the xda-developers site for info. its as easy as creating a CWM sdcard, copying 2 zip files to it, rebooting with the card in it and installing the 2 zips to the internal memory. it;s well supported on that forum because it was one of the least expensive yet most capable device out there so everyone bought one.

using 7.2, you can get access to full Market

You can;t brick this even if you tried because it boots off the SDcard(like a floppy disk) first making the most modder friendly tablet out there.

Battery life is surpringly good-atleast 8 hours continuous usage for me, atleast 8 DAYS in standby.

can put up to 32 gb microsdcard

Cons: its only a single core cpu so it can bog down

uses non standard microusb cable to charge. be careful not to break the cable or the port.

battery not removable

back speak volume a little low-need headphones to enjoy sound fully.

ics 9 ports don;t support hardware acceleration yet

Other Thoughts: I didn;t buy it from Newegg but I have 2 of them. i may buy more.

Nothing wrong with refurbished if you are going to mod it(you voided the warranty anyway).

I am only posting this review to help fellow shoppers out and to let them know that generally, there is nothing wrong with refurbished nook colors. they are a great deal.

I use this tablet primarily for watching korean dramas using the Viki.COM android app and other media streaming applications. It also runs flash websites.

i am waiting for a more powerful tablet like the Nexus 7 or Asus Transformer but in the mean time, I haven;t found any reason to get rid of this one.
