Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.
  • newegg Tell better stories The D5100 delivers exceptionally high-quality movie performance due to its full HD capability while the latest in Full-time autofocus takes the guess work out of tracking your subjects while in motion. • newegg Effects mode The D5100 incorporates an amazing array of special effects for use when taking still pictures or recording D-Movie Full HD movies. Selective Color isolates any color within the scene; capture details in places too dark for your own eyes using Night Vision; create bright, glowing images filled with atmosphere with High Key; emphasize the mood of a scene using Low Key; Miniature Effect makes a scene look like a miniature scale model; and Color Sketch creates color outlines of the subject that are played back as a series of stills in a slide show.
  • newegg HDR (High Dynamic Range) In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
  • newegg Vari-angle LCD Monitor Take pictures or record movies from a unique viewpoint, the D5100's 3.0 inch, super sharp, 921,000-dot Vari-angle LCD monitor allows for versatile high quality viewing and playback. Explore every angle, with overhead shots, waist level candids, ground level and fun self portraits; you will never miss a shot. This Vari-angle monitor allows you to be creative from any point of view.
  • newegg Capture your subjects precisely D5100's 11-point AF system provides flexibility to compose the shot you want ensuring your subject is captured sharply wherever it's located in the frame. Working together with the Scene Recognition System, the camera can keep your main subject in focus even if the composition changes using Nikon's exclusive 3D-tracking.

4 out of 5 eggsEnjoying This!

Pros: I bought this over similar cameras for the articulated (fully tiltable) LCD display panel which lets me take pictures of kids and pets at their eye level, or overhead event pictures in crowds. Not used a LOT, but excellent when needed. And almost indispensable for extreme closeup (macro) photography.

I am getting clearly superior images compared to my previous non-DSLR cameras. The D5100's extremely high pixel count is valuable when using very high-resoulution lenses. I generally recommend AGAINST pixel-count comparisons, but with this camera and Nikkor lenses, you CAN see image features being resolved even when they are magnified so individual pixels are distinguishable.

Other DSLRs are comparable, but this lets me use my ancient Nikkor F vintage 1970 (and newer) lenses, It is relatively light and compact for a DSLR, which is a plus for me.

VERY fast shooting. Fantastic autofocus. Fun in-camera effects I thought I'd never use.

Cons: If you are accustomed to a "Point & Shoot" camera, be ready for a nuch bigger and heavier camers. Borrow one for a couple of days to make sure it fits your life style. Not a shortcoming of the camera; just a general warning!

It can use old Nikon F lenses, but requires "AF-S" lenses for full functionality. Some features of more-expensive models were removed to reduce manufacturing cost, some only for marketing reasons. No deal-breakers, but a bit annoying.

Other Thoughts: This is an addendum to my earlier review which I wrote before I bought this camera because I was concerned that newbies needed to be clear about having to spend at least $150 for a lens for a "body only" camera.

Now that I've owned the camera for several months, I can address my very positive experience.

If my Pro and Con tags seem contradictory, it was done intentionally. Judgement of compact/light vs. big/heavy is personal. The D5100 is actually more compact and lighter than many other DSLRs, but be ready for this. In my youth, I carried a film SLR and SIX prime lenses with me, until I realized this made vacatios become work! I spent the next 30 years using a variety of cheaper, smaller, easier to use cameras. As a retired geezer, I got seduced by the FAR superior quality, flexibility, and speed of DSLRs. This camera is a good compromise in cost, wright, and size. And I an VERY happy with the image quality I am getting.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Price, but No Lens

Pros: Best price I have seen for this excellent camera body.

Cons: If you are a newbie in higher level photography, Think this through.

This camera body has no lens. That is as I want it, because I want a more versatile lens than the 18-55 mm zoom everybody else's kit includes. The combo Newegg offers includes a 70-300mm zoom. If you buy this, you will also need to buy a main lens in, say, the 24-50mm range. The Nikon 18-55mm is a decent choice. You will very seldom mount the 70-300 unless you are specializing in something like nature or sports photography.

Other Thoughts: Remember that a DX camera like the D5100 uses a smaller sensor than the old 35mm film frame, so it sees only the center of the image. Not a problem for most users, and a LOT better than most cameras. But the clipping means your image looks like it was taken with a more telephoto lens. You need to multiply the real lens focal length by 1.5 to get the equivalent image a 35mm film camera would see.

So the 70-300mm lens on the D5100 acts as a 105-450mm , meaning it is a medium tele to very long tele. It will be useless indoors, but great for sports.

Perhaps 90% of pictures I have ever taken were in the 35mm to 85mm (equivalent) range, with far more taken wider than longer. The 18-55 starter lens is equivalent to 27-82mm, a zoom range similar to most general-purpose digital cameras.
