5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice Microscope

Pros: In general it's easier to use than a regular old-fashioned microscope, but needs a steady hand. This difficulty is offset by the ability to take "snapshots" and save them to the computer's storage device(s) Is treated as a web-cam by the Windows 7 software. The lights around the lens are quite good at providing light for the object being observed.

Cons: Not much to complain about at this price level. However, keeping it focused and on the subject is a little tricky by hand. Some kind of "stand" to hold the microscope would be useful.

Other Thoughts: Works very well. This would make a great gift for a grade school child and is interesting for anyone. You can think of it like a super-macro camera lens that gets in many times closer than any normal digital camera.

Pros: None

Cons: Seller never said it only took videos using Windows Vista. Found out in instruction manual when I got item. Software is TERRIBLE for this product. Constant Pop up's and I ended up deleting it all. What a mistake. Newegg was no help either!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: - great price as a shellshocker deal
- good picture quality
- worked just fine with Win7 pro 64 & included software

Cons: - included software is poor. It appears to be just a generic freeware webcab app. very clunky, not intuitive, etc. Dedicated software would be nice.
-I've found that focusing on an object you can dial in on 2 different magnifications. Assuming one is near 100x & the other around 300x, but you manually turn a dial to focus & zoom. It has lines that should enable you to tell what the magnification level is but there is no index or reference line. Plus how far away it will change the true magnification level. Not a big deal, but you have to estimate/guess at what the magnification level is. Ok for saying "about 100x" but if that's really 75x or 125x you don't really know unless you want to fiddle around calibrating it with something.
-No stand & the cord is so stiff you have to hand-hold it or the cord will knock it over/move it around.

Other Thoughts: Overall, it's a neat toy/gadget but by no means a substitute for a real microscope. It will give you the ability to get good, clear pictures and since the light is coming from the top down instead of up through a slide like a traditional microscope, you get a different perspective of the object.
Don't let my cons turn you off. they're legitimate gripes, but very minor considering what this does for such little cost. Don't expect hi-res pictures - I want to say they're 640x480 or something close to that. Enlarging them just results in pixelation as does viewing in full screen (at least on my 24" monitor). But at the native size, they're pretty good pictures.

1 out of 5 eggsSTOP THE PRESSES

Pros: Makes an expensive USB flash light.

Cons: Does not work on XP or Win 7 as packaged.
Newegg will not refund it.

Other Thoughts: Seems as if Newegg would take more responsibility here. This is unlike their usually solid service.

Essentially you're stuck with a 3rd party seller who at best might send a driver upgrade disk for Vista. How ridiculous, Vista?

Pros: when it works it is cool

Cons: I can't get it to work consistently on Windows 7. Even on vista I have problems keeping it working. The software that it comes with sucks.

2 out of 5 eggsBehind times

Pros: Looks like beautiful design and concept and looked perfect for what I needed analysing and photographing agricultural pests.

Cons: I have yet to use it because all 5 of my computers are on Window 7 or Apple and their are no drivers available for them. support did not offer much promise for getting any drivers either.
