AudioSource AMP-100 Stereo Amplifier

AudioSource presents: the stereo amplifier. No digitally programmable toasters that sing in two languages, no holographic video projection, just a no-frills, solid 50W per channel stereo amplifier. Okay, it does have an auto-on signal sensor, but hey, they needed ONE frill, didn't they?

Now, because it's a no-frills device, there's not much to say about it. The specs cover the technical aspect, the pictures cover the visual component, and I'm not going to blow it all out of proportion. It's an amplifier, it does what it says it will do, and it does it pretty well. Now, if it happens that you need an amplifier, and don't want one that requires you to read the technical manual just to figure out how to turn it on, this is a marriage made in Heaven. You've found it, and it's right here.

Check it out and decide. I think you'll like what you see.

5 out of 5 eggsawesome

Pros: super low noise. with the volume all the way up, and a long rca cable plugged into the input, but not plugged into any source, i can't hear any hiss at all. auto off is great, sound quality is great. The knobs feel tight and smooth like high quality potentiometers. i dont hear any pops or hiss while turning the knobs.

Cons: it has a balance knob which i dont need.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little amp

Pros: This amp does exactly what you need it to. It doesn't have a bunch of channels you'll never use and fancy LCD displays you don't need. It powers speakers with ease and provides two channels for a little extra utility and a line out to connect all of the rest of your stuff. It doesn't run too hot either. The volume and balance knobs are stiff as hell so you know they'll never budge from where you want them kept.

Cons: None. Quality piece of equipment that does what it needs to do and nothing else.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Amp for the $$$

Pros: the amp will sleep after a few minutes of no signal. great for saving power costs. provides very clean signal in mono mode. I run 2 of these amps in mono mode. one is dedicated to right and one is dedicated to left.

Cons: they 'pop' when waking up from sleep. not an issue, but it makes my wife ask "what was that noise" after she turns on the TV.

Other Thoughts: the pop i describe only happens on one of my amps. the right channel one. might be something i did wrong in the setup, but the left one does not do this.

5 out of 5 eggsunbeatable for the price

Pros: everything for the money

Cons: Its an amp...what more do you want from it?

Other Thoughts: I did not purchase this unit through Newegg, but just wanted to let folks know, this thing is awesome for a multitude of solutions. For the price, nothing on the market tops it.

And to the user comparing this to an A/V Receiver...are you serious? Of COURSE the H/K sounds better...it has the capability to equalize sound! This is an AMPLIFIER. It does nothing more than supply power to the speakers! Nothing more, nothing less.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty Product

Pros: Works well if you only want to use it for 1 device. If so use input 2.

Cons: Auto power switching is intolerable. The sound will cut out in mid song or movie, just because the audio level dips below a certain threshold. There is a switch on the back that seems like it would disable this feature, but it does not. Only good for one device not 2. Use input 2 to connect to. Should work for 2 devices with out problems but does not. Only uses analog RCA connections.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend this!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat when use in Briged mode

Pros: I use two of the amp100 in bridged mode to run a L+R Polk M-70's pair in 2.0 stereo setup.
They drive these large floorstanding speakers with authority, pushing 150 wpc w/o any problems or clipping at high volume. The sound is neutral and warm.

I use a set of Emotiva XDA-1 & USP-1 as preamp with a squeezebox duet as transport. The system sounds fantastic. I listen to all sort of music.

Cons: None for the price.

In stereo mode it has it's limitations outside casual bookshelves powering, but when used as monoblock amps, they really shine.
No trigger inputs, just signal sensing. Oh well for the price I can not complain though.

Other Thoughts: I used the audiosource Amp310 (150 wpc) into the same system, and in comparison. 2 of these amps will do the same job, delivering 150 wpc, in bridged mode for less then half the price of the Amp310.

You need to read the manual, it is not detailed, but it suffciently explain how to use this amp.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat lower cost amp

Pros: Quality, basic amp.

Everthing about it has a soild, quality feel.

Excellent speaker wire binding posts.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: I got the "Amp 100" to use with a graphic EQ and a stand alone source switcher for a low cost, great sounding stereo, multi media sys.

It behaves well when driven into clipping.

5 out of 5 eggsIdeal

Pros: Auto on/off is a fantastic feature. I have it set up with my outdoor speakers, being fed by an airport express (Apple Airplay). Now, when I am outside, I can just turn the music on from my phone, and I don't need to go in the house to turn on the receiver. Plus any of my friends who are on my wifi can play their music as well.

Cons: I wish it were rack mountable like the AMP-102 model. Had I known, I would have gotten the upgrade.

Other Thoughts: Auto switching inputs does work. As does playing A + B speakers at the same time. People having trouble just didn't read the manual. For auto switching, the default needs to be in line 2. The one you switch to is line 1. As for A + B speakers, just press both buttons at the same time. Finally, some people have had trouble with the auto input switch back to line 2 when the music gets silent. The latest version has a longer delay to correct this problem.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Solid Amplifier

Pros: Auto On / OFF
Auto Input Switching
Two output zones

Cons: Small form factor, not standard rack size

Other Thoughts: This amp does what it is advertised to do. The complaint about the switching not working must be from folks that are to busy to read the manual. The manual clearly states that the primary input is line 2 and any secondary device should be hooked to line 1. While this is a little bit of backward thinking, it is documented clearly.
I have also learned that my new unit has a much longer delay time when switching from line 1 input back to line 2 input. When I called Audiosource support I was told that all of the units being built for the last year or so have a delay of around 10 seconds. This should help “FIX” the units of the people that don’t have time to read the manual.
I have also learned by trial and error (and also reading the manual) that to have speakers A & B play at the same time you just push the buttons at the same time. Not what I would expect, but works fine. The unit’s small size works for most people, but I would have liked it to be mountable in my rack of gear.
