1 out of 5 eggsDead on arrival.

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Older 2 TB RE drives I have function well and have not had any issues. Hoped for same experience. Was actually packed well, although first time I have ever ordered just one drive from Newegg.

Cons: Dead on arrival. Spins up partially, makes a loud click, spins down, repeat. Tried on multiple SATA ports and power connectors in my Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 PC. Neither box would boot with it installed. Connecting it after booting did not allow it to be initialized. Going back.

Other Thoughts: Frustrating that quality assurance is still not assured even with expensive enterprise-class products. A WD Black drive I bought less than two years ago had to be exchanged. At least WD's RMA exchange process for it was smooth.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer, it is unfortunate that you experienced a faulty drive. Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses, and for this reason it is unfortunate that you have received a dead on arrival drive. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Drive, Bad Packaging

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -Low infant mortality rate
-Very Fast for a Spinning Disk
-Advanced RAID featuresets available
-SATA3/6.0Gb/s
-Feels sturdy (smaller drives are sometimes too light and poorly balanced internally)

Cons: Newegg consistently fails to package these drives properly, they are very heavy with all the platters in them.

I routinely see 1 in 10 damaged in shipping from newegg, other vendors are able to properly package these so I usually order these from alternate vendors to save the RMA headache.

Other Thoughts: I always keep at least one spare on hand for spinning or SSD in a business critical environment

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive...while it lasted

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large capacity, high transfer rate, good with heavy loads. I used this as my game drive.

Cons: Expensive, started corrupting files after about 8 month. At 10 months, I started up my computer & it ran a drive scan on this drive on startup, with a whole bunch of unreadable data. After about an hour, I just killed the scan & rebooted my computer, skipping the scan. Luckily I got a SeaGate drive from my friend for $150 the day before, so I transferred everything over to that drive & formatted the old drive. I ran a disc scan after the format to see how much of the drive was lost, but the scan come up with no problems. So at this point I don't know if I should attempt to get a replacement through WD or attempt to use it again & see if I run into the same corruption problems.

Other Thoughts: I expect the fact that I have over 700 games on my Steam account alone that were being constantly updated on this drive may be the cause for it's early demise. So while the drive does state that it's good under heavy loads, I can't say that it is good over extended heavy use.

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: warranty

Other Thoughts: compare the DOA HDDs from this site vs the site that is a river that runs through S america.... it's roughly 1:100 in favor of the river site.

4 out of 5 eggslarge price, large capacity

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Probably the best 4TB SATA drive on the market for SAN, NAS, or internal RAID storage.

4TB works fine with an iomega Storecenter PX2-300d even if it's not supported by iomega.

After a heavily jostled delivery these drives haven't thrown any errors yet. Even if they did I wouldn't blame it on Western Digital.

I didn't have the time to throw each of drive through the gauntlet to check for errors, so I just used windows error checking and selected the box to attempt to repair the errors. Each drive took over 12hrs to finish with just that test. I didn't see anything in the log that referred to errors.

Cons: So far no cons about these RE drives. whew!

I ordered 2x WD4000FYYZ and 2xWD3000FYYZ drives for an Iomega Storecenter PX2-300d. The packing from newegg for multiple bare drives totally bl0wz. It appears they use the same open ended Styrofoam as they receive the drives from the manufacturer. They wrapped it in one layer of bubble wrap then threw in a bunch of peanuts into the box. The drives were stacked on one another 2x2. the box arrived damaged and the bubble wrap that touched the bare drives was popped. I was very concerned since I paid for 2-day shipping instead of free shipping to try and avoid this, but oh well.

It appears newegg has given up on UPS and switched to OnTrac. all my orders in 2013 have arrived via ontrac. I won't post my comments about ontrac. do a google search for 'ontrac review'. It's not very positive. Ontrac doesn't require a signature, so you can't tell them to return a damaged box to the sender when you see they left a damaged box on your open doorstep worth $1500.

Other Thoughts: I would locate a retail boxed item for these drives if you can. These drives are worth spending another $100 each for proper packaging. Unless, of course, you like throwing away hundreds of dollars for DOAs and wasting a month waiting for 2 day deliveries and RMAs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat purchase

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large, fast and quiet. Also runs cool.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Used as a stand alone at the moment, this drive has enough space for me to consolidate all of my old 640GB drives down to one with space to spare. I'm very impressed with the build, and again with how quiet the drive is. I would buy more.

1 out of 5 eggsInevitable

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large Capacity

Cons: Purchased four of these drives to replace aging storage. 1 drive died within the first four hours.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Mechanical Hard Drive!

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This is probably the best and most expensive hard disk drive I have ever bought to date--and it seems to be worth it so far. I know there are other much cheaper drives but those are notorious for failure and unreliable. Soon after receiving this hard drive, I installed it in my PC and formatted it using GPT and run benchmarks. Using ATTO Disk Benchmark, it was apparent this is also the fastest mechanical drive I have in my system even though the other ones are also rated 7200 RPM SATA III. ATTO shows fastest write of 155765 and 182196 on fastest read. That's fast for a mechanical drive! But all this would be worthless if the disk fails or have bad sectors so I used Western Digital's "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool" and I run an Extended Test which took over 8 hours on this 4TB drive. Results shows absolutely no errors! But to make sure I run another 3rd party program to check again (Hard Disk Sentinel) and run another Extended Test that took 8+ more hours... same result.. NO ERRORS! Also I was able to verify using that program that this is indeed a brand new drive that hasn't been used. Temperature is also pretty good. Doing a long extended test only raised the temp to 42℃ (Ambient temp in room is 33 ℃). I have a big case though with decent ventilation.

Cons: Well... its expensive but you get what you pay for (only more time will tell). So far this HDD have a lot of good reviews. This is an Enterprise class drive and is 4TB is size so we are paying for that premium. The drive is not completely silent--it makes some audible sounds when transferring files or seeking but its expected. Other mechanical drives also produces this sound. On silent PC cases like the Antec P280, I'm guessing it will be hardly audible at all. There's really not much cons for this HDD. If you know what you're doing, you know you have to use GPT when you format this so you get just one 4TB drive (3.63TB after formatting using NTFS). If you format using regular MBR, it will split the drive using 2 or more drive letters.

Other Thoughts: I'm PC enthusiast and an avid gamer. One of the reasons that led me to this drive is that my OCZ Vertex 4 512GB SSD is not enough to hold all of my games--especially my Steam games. I needed something better and reliable. For my set up, I have the main Steam app and games installed on this WD RE 4TB drive. I use SteamMover app (Google it) to move the games I play the most on the OCZ Vertex 4 SSD. If I don't play it much anymore, I can just move it back to the WD RE drive and transfer another one in. Works great for me. This app retains all file associations and locations even after moving the games using SteamMover. Other use for this drive is I have stored some of my encrypted volumes here that has my banking records, resume, and other sensitive files that I cannot afford to loose. So far I'm very satisfied with the performance of this drive and hopefully it last long as the WD RE history suggest it would.

My PC Rig:
Corsair 600T White Edition PC Case (using Antec TrueQuietPro fans)
PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III 1200W Platinum Certified PSU
Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 Motherboard
Intel i7 2700k CPU OC'ed to 4.5Ghz (Stable up to 4.8Ghz)
Samsung 840 Pro SSD 256GB (Main OS)
OCZ Vertex 4 SSD 512GB (Selected Games and Programs)
Seagate 3TB SATA III 7200RPM HDD x3 (Storage Drives)
Western Digital RE 4TB Enterprise HDD (Important Files)
Thermaltake Extreme 2.0 CPU Liquid Cooling
EVGA GTX 680 Classified x2 in SLI Config (both stable @ 1293Mhz OC)
G.Skill Ripjaws X RAMs 2133 @ 9-11-10-28 1T timings
Asus PB278Q LED PLS Monitor @ 2560 x 1440p
Plextor PX-LB950SA Bluray burner CD/DVD/Bluray drive

Running Windows 7 SP1 x64 bit OS

*Yea, I want a GTX Titan too.. but not with this setup.. I have to wait now.. lol .. plus my SLI 680s still beats the GTX Titan on benchmarks for about the same price point. GTX Titan wins in terms of having lower power consumption and lower noise though.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive BUT......

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: First I'd like to say this is a great drive. I purchased two of these drives with a Synology 412+ and the mach has been flawless ( The second time, see cons below.). The total system wakes up a little slow but not too slow and i am able to steam movies to remote locations. not once has either drive had any issues and both usually run at around 90 deg F. Noise is not an issue either. Great drive.

Cons: The only con doesn"t have to do with the drive directly and hopefully Newegg will be on top of this issue. When I recieved my NAS and two drives I opened the box and my wife knew something was wrong when I said "YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!" the sever was fine as was one Drive having been wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in its own little box. The second drive however looked as though it had been flung into the main box without any wrapping at all and had made a nice little nest for itself bashing about in the box ( I took a picture of it). It was DOA. and had to be sent back. An efficiant but week and a half long process. The replacement drive was packed properly in a saddle box in bubble wrap and works fine. As I said hopfully Newegg is on top of the issue, nothing can ruin a Good rep faster than a disgruntled Employee.

Other Thoughts: Expensive but worth it for 24x7 operation over time. The four egg would have been five without the mess up but would have been a Two or three if I hadn't waited to review.

5 out of 5 eggsThey keep getting better

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Dependability, assurance of quality delivery condition.

Cons: Just don't get much of a break Terabte to terabte upgrade

Other Thoughts: Been ordering the RE models for years. Slowly moved from 500 gig to 1000 to 2000 and now 5x 4000 gig drives for my 'puter setups. I've yet to have a failure. Literally have some 500 and 1000's sitting aside as too small, but still good 5 years later. With NewEgg's now improved packaging, I don't even sweat possible shipping handling problems.
