2 out of 5 eggsPainfully Slow

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: *) Small form factor, fits easily next to other USB devices and plugs.

*) Reliable, no issues with data integrity

*) Partitioned and formatted just fine with NTFS in DISKPART

*) BOOTSECT worked just fine to make this flash drive bootable

Cons: *) Horrible performance. When these drives get be painful slow! When new, they're still rather slow, but at least manageable. And this isn't a USB 2.0 issue, as more expensive USB 2.0 flash drives from Kingston are much, much faster.

*) I can't stress the bad performance enough: horrid when nearly full (less than 1GB free). Write performance can drop down to single-digit KB/sec. Seriously. For example 18MB of xml and ini files copied to one folder can crawl at 8KB/s and take minutes. Unacceptable. I have a feeling this is due to cheap ICs/buffers/whatever inside the flash drive that doesn't reclaim partially written flash cells quickly enough. Because performance on a fresh drive for this model is a little slow, but not this painful.

*) Sometimes the drives can stuck in their own permanently mounted condition, meaning that no amount of waiting for the drive will let you safely eject it. I have to reboot a system just to eject the drive sometimes (may be 1 out of 5 times) of writing data to it.

Other Thoughts: We bought 6 of these USB flash drives from Newegg to use with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to run scripted installs of Windows 7 on client systems. They served their purpose, but very slow.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi there - Thank you for your review and we apologize for your experience with the USB. We'd like to clarify that this drive is designed as an entry-level, cost-effective USB drive. A USB like this is most well suited for small sized data transfers and general data storage.

If you're looking for fast write/read speeds this drive is definitely not for you, but you can take a look at some of our other models like DTLPG3/64GB, DTR30G2/64GB, and HXS3/64GB which have write speeds of 40MB/s vs 45MB/s vs 180MB/s respectively. We like having a variety of options for our customers to choose from so you will see the wide range of speeds vs capacity vs price.

Feel free to contact us for support and to explore your warranty options at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT or chat with us online: http://geni.us/KingstonSupport with the following case number: SR358083.

Thank you for choosing Kingston Technology,

5 out of 5 eggsLowish transfer speeds. But INCREDIBLY RUGGED

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: - This drive is generally cheap
- Looks good in my opinion
- This drive CANNOT be destroyed. Mine went in the washing machine and dryer twice, yet it still works as new and I've had no data loss.

Cons: - Transfer speeds are lowish. Not that I care since the drive is USB 2.0 anyway.

Other Thoughts: Very useful to carry around on a keyring.

4 out of 5 eggsA tank

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: -Durable
-Reliable
-Small
-Perfect on a keyring

Cons: -Mediocre read speeds
-Terrible write speeds

Other Thoughts: I own one of these, as does every technician in the office. They're beautiful, sleek, small, basically breakproof.

The only drawback - don't use this flashdrive as a data bus. The write speed quickly plummets to a pitiful 1-2MBps as it heats up. It reads at a reasonable pace, 15-20MBps. This flash drive is great for carrying around some emergency boot images and tools wherever you go, but it is far from a performance device.

3 out of 5 eggsSlowwwwww

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: Reliable. I have both a 32 GB and an 8 GB DTSE9 and they've both been reliable for a couple years or so now.

Cons: Very, very slow. I have both a 32 GB and an 8 GB DTSE9 and the write times are so slow. Takes a great deal of my patience to wait out a write on these.

5 out of 5 eggsBest thumb drive EVER!

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: -Actual metal construction
-Nice big loop

Cons: -Nothing

Other Thoughts: I had snagged an 8 or 16 gig version previously just because, I can not tell you how impressed I was with it. The metal construction means it doesn't get crushed or broken in my pocket. The nice big loop on the end means I can hook it onto or hang it off of dam near anything and I won't lose it because some dinky little piece of plastic broke. I seriously can't see how anyone else ever manages to sell any other thumb drives.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfect

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: Had this for 2 years, half of the time on a key-chain getting bumped around and it reliably held all of my school work.

For the last year I abused it, leaving it plugged into my xbox1 to watch movies off of constantly, it gets hot doing that but it has never failed me.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing little product

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: Very sleek
Doesnt scratch easily
Good up/down speeds

Cons: Small and difficult to put into a USB slot (unless on key chain)
Gets quite hot after transferring a couple GB's of data

Other Thoughts: It is by far the best USB flash drive i've ever owned. If it did not get so hot it would be 5 eggs. Looks great on my keychain and can hold all the info i will ever need on the go. Great for work/school projects!

2 out of 5 eggsBurnt out fast

This review is from: Kingston 32GB DataTraveler SE9 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZ)

Pros: I enjoyed the large amount of space for the price, and didn't mind that it wasn't incredibly fast with the transfer.

Cons: The USB heated up incredibly quickly when transferring data or being accessed by the computer. After about 3 months of using it, the device was no longer recognizable by any of my USB ports. I have other flash drives that work wonderfully after extended periods of use.... but not this one.

Manufacturer Response:
