2 out of 5 eggsGets really hot

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: Compact form factor - fits within USB vertical stack on laptop without crowding the other port.

Nice metal finish.

Cons: This thing gets super hot! Just plugging it in, it gets pretty warm - when reading or writing, it gets uncomfortably hot. I don't really use it, I get worried about permanent damage to either the drive or the USB port it's plugged into.

Other Thoughts: I've used Kingston flash drives for years, and this is the first drive I've had that got this hot. I don't trust it not to cause issues with my hardware, or to be reliable. In fact, I'm just going to toss it. I wouldn't want anyone else to have issues because of the heat.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue experienced with the DTSE9 flash drive. The drive can be warm to touch when used as electricity will build up heat which is more noticeable with the metal casing. If the drive is becoming uncomfortably warm there may be an issue with that particular drive. If you still have the drive, we can replace it under it's five year warranty. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

1 out of 5 eggsTwice Bitten!

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: Light, small, compact

Cons: Just like the first one of these I bought, it lasted about 45 days and died on me. Has a ton of junk files that you cannot delete even using disk part. I have tried to talk to customer support and all they said is if I cannot fix it using disk part, then I need to send it in and get another in the mail. Waste of time IMO, and I will NEVER buy one of these again in my life. If it is not bad enough that these things take a millennium to transfer big files to and from, they also have a lifespan of less than 2 months. No way, never again!

Fool me once, shame on me! Fool me TWICE, shame on YOU!

Other Thoughts: If this device were much faster, and had a decent lifespan then it would be nice. However, this is twice now I have purchased this exact same memory stick, and twice now I have had the same exact problems. Perhaps it is due to bad manufacturing, or just bad luck. Either way, it left a bad taste in my mouth for Kingston and I don't think I will ever give their products another try. Even with a lifetime warranty, I can't trust their products with my files that are crucial to me, so why bother.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Jeramy,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue that has occurred with the two DTSE9H flash drives. We perform 100% testing on all of our products to ensure quality and reliability, as detailed here: http://www.kingston.com/us/company/testing . Although, with all electronic components there is a small chance of failure. It is odd to have two drives in a row fail and we may be able to further investigate the issue. As you found, we stand by all our products and can replace the faulty drives under their five year warranty. For further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: Small, metal uni-body construction

Cons: Modest speed, generates a decent amount of heat during operation but not enough to be a concern

Other Thoughts: I also own the 16 GB version and, as noted in other reviews, these aren't speed demons. Writes are at 5.2 to 5.3 MB/s and sustained reads seem to hover around 19 to 20 MB/s. I just wanted some cheap "sneaker net" storage and these drives work well enough for that purpose but people needing high reads and writes will be better served with something USB 3.0 or an SSD with a USB adapter.

2 out of 5 eggsYou can find better deal

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: High quality metal design that should last forever.

Cons: Terribly slow. 5 megabytes per second write speed for large files (1 - 2 GB). This is not because of USB 2.0. USB 2.0 can transfer up to 30 megabytes per second! Test your USB 2.0 external hard drive and you will see.
If you want to copy 2 GB video, you will need like 7 minutes. Imagine if you would like to fill the whole disk. You would need almost 4 hours for 64 GB model.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for any issue created by the DTSE9H drive's performance. This drive is an entry level USB 2.0 drive and does not provide performance USB 2.0 transfer speeds. If you are looking for a performance drive, please consider one of our USB 3.0 performance models which are are backwards compatible to USB 2.0 such as the DTU30G3 that offers 20MB/s in USB 2.0 and 70MB/s in USB 3.0 ports. For further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

2 out of 5 eggsDEAD after 2 weeks of use!

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: Seemed like a wonderful device! I reviewd it about a week ago and gave it 5 EGGS!

Cons: 2 DAYS after I gave it 5 EGGS in my review, the device completely DIED! I cannot get Windows to see it any longer and every time I plug it into the PC it tells me to format the device. Then if I choose to format it, it stops telling me that the device cannot be formatted! Then it once filled with a bunch of files that look like alien jargon writing, something I have NEVER seen anything do before. It filled itself with 50 files that were HUGE in file size filling the entire memory stick with unreadable file names. Then after unplugging it and reinserting it again it once again asked me to format it and it wont format it. This device just went completely crazy! I seriously need to RMA this device and I will as soon as I get back to America, but I can't do anything with it right now since I am vacationing overseas! Wow, wonderful device!.... not!

Other Thoughts: I don't know what to say.... This thing completely disappoints me and when using it the thing gets seriously HOT to even touch. I think somehow it just burned up inside the device. Nothing else makes much sense. I have never seen a memory stick like this before go completely bonkers and get nearly red hot when using it. It is so defective that it brings an all new meaning to the word defective! Thankfully it has a 5 year warranty, as when I return to california this sucker is getting RMA'd!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue occurring with the DTSE9H flash drive. This drive has an operating temperature of 32° to 140° F (0° to 60°C), so it is unlikely that it has burnt out. The description of the issue may be due to some form of data corruption, the mysterious files may actually be old files that had been previously deleted but not fully written over and the corruption caused them to come back up as such. If you have not already, try deleting the partition on the drive in Disk Management or in command prompt using diskpart commands. We are here to help and can walk you through this to see if we can get the drive back to working order. We do offer support and warranty around the globe, depending on where you are in the world and how long you plan to be there you may want to contact our support in your current area. You can find our international contact information here: http://www.kingston.com/us/company/contacts . If you prefer to wait until you are back in California, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent thumb drive

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: Good transfer speeds (for USB 2.0), very small, durable, fits perfectly on my key chain.

Cons: None (*should* be USB 3.0)

Other Thoughts: As an IT professional I tend to use this device A LOT, and where other devices have started to fail or break over time, this one shows no signs of stopping.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome product, Awesome price!

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: * Awesome design
* Durable
* Compact
* Can attach to a key chain for on the go data
* Fast data transfer for affordable price

Cons: Gets warm when used for long periods of time. Not like it burns your fingers or anything like that, it's just strangely warmer than any other USB Thumb Drive due to metal design.

Other Thoughts: I am really happy with this USB Thumb Drive! It stores a decent amount of data for the price. Seems to be very durable being enclosed in a metal case that is made for attaching to a key chain. I think the only thing I ccan complain about is that it is not 2TB or something, lol. But otherwise, I would REALLY recommend this bad boy to anyone looking for a nice usb thumb drive for a reasonable price tag.

1 out of 5 eggsActual Size is 57.6GB

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: Works perfectly out box. Nice metal enclosure to prevent it from bending in your pocket. The design incorporates a key loop so you won't lose it. Small compact size won't be a bulge in your pocket.

Cons: The product is miss labeled. I shows that it's a 64GB flash drive but when connected to Windows it only reads 57.6. Yeah, understand that it might be smaller than 64GB, but it's missing 6.4 GB of space. I actually would have been satisfied with 60GB. I purchased 64GB because I needed 60 to load a large program from one computer to another. I would change my rating to a 5 if Kingston can explain to me what happen to the 6.4GB's,

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer some clarification. Please understand some of the listed capacity is used in formatting and other functions as such would not be available for storage. Other functions for instance includes reserving some memory cells as "spares". Flash memory cells have a long but finite lifespan, these cells are held in reserve to replace any that may fail over time in the long term. The largest amount is usually due to the misconception of how GBs are determined in manufacturing versus how they are determined logically by a computer. In manufacturing a KB is 1,000 Bytes while logically on a computer it is 1,024 Bytes this is true for all storage devices. With that said 64,000,000,000 Bytes makes a 64GB flash drive and a computer calculates that to roughly 59.6GB the remainder that is "missing" is due to the formatting and other functions of the drive. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

5 out of 5 eggsNot all USB flash drives are equal

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/64GB

Pros: Bought this as a music drive for my new Subar*u. It works, is reasonably fast and with 16GB pretty roomy. It will hold a day worth of driving music. Solid real-metal housing.

Cons: None
