2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/128GB

Pros: Low price. Kingston tech support is good.

Cons: Doesn't work in Windows XP. Kingston tech support said it should. They will send me replacement with a different revision number.

4 out of 5 eggsKingston DataTraveler G4

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/128GB

Pros: Attractive, delivers 26.8-30.6 GB write speed for large photo inventory.

Cons: No transfer indicator light. While not essential, I like to see that a transaction is in work as indicated by a flickering LED. Case width a tad large making for at tight fit next to another USB drive, but it does not prevent use.

Other Thoughts: I subtracted 1 egg for no light.

5 out of 5 eggsHuge amount of Storage

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/128GB

Pros: Large Capacity. Reasonably fast with window xcopy or Linux cp.
Very good price! Quick Delivery

Cons: None .

Other Thoughts: I did not find copying unreasonably slow. xcopy from theDOS command line works much faster than windows drag and drop. When plugged into Linux, (Old Pentium 4 ). copy also seems reasonably fast. (when compared with other USB Sticks)
Was able to store my complete Audio CD collection on this Drive. I have a HomeTheater System. I plug this thing into my TV and my play List goes forever. I have yet to try it in my Car Radio's USB port. It replaces my TEAC 100 CD component player. It did take me a while to rip my CD to my Computer Hard Drive, after which I copied them to Kinston Flash Drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/128GB

Pros: Fast enough for me. Will transfer from my computer to the drive 250MB in about 18 sec.

Cons: Capacity shows only 115 GB, but is not a big deal to me.

Other Thoughts: Got mine for 29.99, so the price was right.

4 out of 5 eggsBig, Cheap, Slow

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/128GB

Pros: Large capacity and I got it on super-sale, so that's a plus. Overall, drives of this size for <= $30 is worthwhile, even despite the cons, and I think that using this as a basic solution for convenient mobile storage (especially at its sale price) is rewarding enough.

Cons: Depending on its usage, it can be really slow. I used it for a portable Windows build in attempts to overcome some Linux software issues and man, it's barely usable for that purpose (even in USB3 slots).

Also, when attempting to install/configure/load a Windows VHD. this thing runs hot. Like, hot hot. I've run large-scale workstations with 15.5K SAS drives and have never had one run as hot as this flash drive runs. Pretty crazy to think about, actually.

It's bulky, but that's to be expected at this size.

The plastic casing feels cheap; this is what I expected but it may be a con to others.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm the type of person to attempt reasonable solutions to tech needs as frugally as possible, and rather than re-invest in yet another SSD plus a better laptop than I currently have to get a Windows VM to play nicely with my Linux build, I decided to attempt to make this cheap flash drive work with my cheap laptop as a solution.

For me, the attempt was unsuccessful and now I'm left looking for something better.

I'm giving this product 4 stars because it's not the product's fault that my expectation of it (in conjunction with the environment I gave it) led to my expectations going unmet. Indeed, this product is ridiculously cheap, comes with an absurd amount of flash storage, and functions just fine as a USB data storage solution. For those who are attempting to use it for a portable Windows solution, I would suggest seeking out a flash drive which has better advertised read/write speeds, even if it's not one of the "certified Microsoft" drives.

Even so, it's a great flash drive, and I consider myself lucky that "failing" to achieve my original intended outcome led to something as fortunate as having a solid backup drive for big file hauls, etc. We should all be so lucky.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/128GB

Pros: Works as advertised.
128GB, USB3.

Cons: Too big.
Has a removable cap.

Other Thoughts: Used 4 these for a multiboot project. I have had absolutely no issues with any of them.

The drive is bigger than it's lower capacity USB 2 cousin. At the time of purchase this is probably due to the large capacity of the drive.

But all of these things are advertised so you're not getting any surprises here. They have been working flawlessly for over a year now.

I will be looking out for a Kingston high capacity USB 3 drive like their previous USB 2.0 models with a small metal casing with no moving parts or caps to lose.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value But Slow Write Speed

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/128GB

Pros: Lots of storage space (around 119GB reported by Windows).

Customisable with a logo.

Good warranty.

Cons: Slow write speeds.

Other Thoughts: Now that everything has moved to newer faster USB 3.0 you'd think flashdrive makers would step up the performance of their products. This model, like so many others, is stuck with slow Write speeds so if you copy a large amount of files onto the drive .... it will take .... a .... while ............
