3 out of 5 eggsCHEAP BASIC "3.0" STORAGE

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: The price.
Cap is tight.
Can be labeled.
Price per gig is less than a dollar!

Cons: VERY SLOW read/write speeds! I have seen USB 2.0 flash drives that performed better!

No activity light?

Other Thoughts: I will avoid this item in the future. I have had better luck with "pricier" units - imagine that.

I'm not sure if I just got a bad batch or what. I haven't had time to test ALL 7 of the drives that I purchased yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for holding software packages

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Fast read speed, utilizing the speed of USB 3.0

Cons: Slow write speed

Other Thoughts: I have many software packages that I use that can be on the order of several Gigabytes. These flash drives have reasonably fast read speeds making them ideal for distributing the installation files to multiple computers.

It is worth noting that the write speed on these drives is painfully slow. Therefore purchase these only for the purpose of permanent file storage. This flash drive is not meant to be the Swiss army knife of flash drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat OS Installers

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Terrific speed, great bundle price. In addition, the caps fit on the back to prevent loss.

Cons: None at all.

Other Thoughts: Used solely for installing different flavors of Linux at work, so this is all I can actually validate.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid build

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Well built. The cap sits tight.
Sequential Read/Write speeds measured in Crystal Disk Mark:
USB 2: 34/8 MB/s
USB 3: 100-108 / 7-14 MB/s (100mb - 500mb test file size)

I will use these drives for the OS installs. The most important part for me - the read speed in USB 2 mode, which is pretty much at the max possible throughput. This mode is used during the installation.

The size is pretty good - not oversized, not "skinny". The cap sits thigh on the back "ring".

Cons: Slow write speeds in both USB 2 and 3.
The outside might feel a bit slippery - takes a bit extra effort to remote the cap. Especially if you gab it by wider sides.

Other Thoughts: Will work great for my intended use.

4 out of 5 eggsGood price, but slow

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Bought 3 at about $4.33 each.
Good brand reputation with a history of good customer support.
5 year warranty.

Cons: I've tested them on USB 3.0 slots with USB Flash Benchmark and initially got around 30 read and 10 write. That sounded right. But from then on I kept getting 90 read and 5 write. Strange. Maybe it's my PC that's having problems.

5 write is pretty slow, and I wish Kingston would just put the specs on their products and on their website. I went there and couldn't find it. I suppose slow speed is expected for their least expensive line of USB flash drives.

Other Thoughts: The actual size available is about 7.25 GB.

I have only owned this for 1 day so I don't know how long they will last.

I chose this over the 8gb Team bundle that is selling for slightly less and has higher advertised write speeds because the reviews said customer support for Team wasn't great, and my past experience with Kingston wasn't bad.

If you're transferring large files or many small files everyday, you will probably want a high speed model. This is probably sufficient for moving large data once in a while, or small data frequently.

3 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Inexpensive, 8GB, feels solid

Cons: Painfully slow transfer. 4.7 MB/second slow (writing, and yes you read that correctly). It's USB 3.0 compatible but that doesn't mean that it writes at 3.0 speeds. "Kingston’s DataTraveler® Generation 4 (DTIG4) features USB 3.0 for quick and easy transfers..." hahaha

5 out of 5 eggswindows 8 install

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Installed windows 8 no problem.

Cons: runs hot

Other Thoughts: I read in the reviews that this flash drive will not install win. 7, but i'm glad I didn't read that be for I bought it because it installed win. 8 with no problems in about 20-30 mins. I may have gotten lucky, but luck usually doesn't play into it when it comes to electronics like this. So it worked perfect for what I bought it for.

5 out of 5 eggsInstalling os

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Works great for data storage.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Other Thoughts: I read that it cannot be used for installing windows 7, I'm glad I didn't read that before I bought it. I used it for installing windows 8 on a new build and it worked perfectly. I don't know if I got lucky but I doubt it because electronics don't usually have luck factor into it. I installed windows 8 from it in about 20-30 mins.

4 out of 5 eggsNice price but runs HOT on USB3

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: Inexpensive
Good storage size for many uses
Form Factor is average

Cons: Drive gets hot (very HOT) when used on USB 3.0 port

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 of these to use as bootable devices (recovery). They've proven fine for that, more capacity than needed. Speeds are nothing to brag about (29 Read/10 Write) - no advantage to using on USB 3.0 port. For some reason this drive runs cool on a USB 2 port, but gets really hot on 3.0 ports. Because of the modest speeds, I'm going to use them on my 2.0 ports - those high temps concern me.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Generation 4 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DTIG4/8GB

Pros: It is working good so far. Product is exactly as advertised.

Cons: None so far. No choice on color but I can deal with yellow.

Other Thoughts: The actual formatted capacity of the 8GB is something like 7.2 GB.
