5 out of 5 eggsActual speeds READ BEFORE YOU READ ALL OTHERS

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: I don't own the 500 gigaBIT powerline, I do own the 200 nanos though.

Real quick before you continue to read all older comments that say they're getting 50-80 Mbps or 65 Mbps.

This unit is 500 Mbps.

The speeds they're looking at are more than likely 50-80 MBps

1 bit = 8 bytes

500 / 8 = 62.5 MBps

The bottom reviewers claim they're tech knowledge is high? Please, they don't even know the absolute BASIC of data.

However, if the speeds they claim are indeed 50-80 MBps and 62.5 MBps, then by all means get it! I am! Good job Netgear!

Cons: none yet

4 out of 5 eggsPerformance depends on your home wiring

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: Easy setup, plugin and ready for use!
Wired network connection in area where Wi-Fi doesn’t work.
Easy monitoring through NetGear Genie app.

Cons: Theoretical speeds of 500 Mbps are a pipe dream.
Performance is dependent on your home wiring.

Other Thoughts: I reviewed this same item on 4/15/2013. I had limited success in my home, but they worked great in my brother’s home. This particular kit performed worse than the last one. In the room where I saw a peak of 17 Mbps, I barely crossed 5 Mbps.

I should be clear: these work. I never managed to see any color other than red for my link speed in my home. The laptop I was using for this testing was usable and music played seamlessly from my server and browsing online was just fine, but watching a movie brought out a stutter or two.

I did see something strange with the firmware update tool though. It told an update was available, but I couldn’t download it because there was no update available. I would be interested in replacing the previous units at my brother’s house, but he is working fine for over a year and I don’t want to mess with that.

Let’s wrap this up…
*Did they work out of the box? YES
*Did they provide a fast connection? No
*Would I recommend them? Yes, I would recommend anyone try them and see how they work in their setup if they have a need for this type of thing.

Previous kit got 5 eggs, this one gets 4 for not meeting the bar set by the previously.

5 out of 5 eggsIbrahim H.-youre just wrong!

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: Items work out of the box. No setup really necessary. Just plug it in and go. Actual speeds vary, but is roughly the equivalent of a 10/100 wired network (speeds 50-100Mb/s) from about 5 years ago using old cat5 cabling. Instead, you're using your AC wiring to do it now, instead of having to run wiring yourself through the walls, attic, etc

Cons: GENERATES RF LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE!! If you're a HAM/Amateur radio operator like me, don't even think for a minute you're gonna work HF anymore with these things plugged in. Matter of fact, you'll hear these things belching out RF many houses down...hope your neighbor doesn't own one. Using one of these on basically unshielded cable turns your AC power lines into a very rough "antenna" and will generate all kinds of radio frequency interference on and around the low frequencies they use in order to operate. If you listen to AM radio, or have any cheap, unshielded appliances around the house that are susceptible to interference from radio waves, these babies are most likely the culprit. It's just how HOMEPLUG works.

Other Thoughts: Ibrahim H. - you're just wrong - these will work FINE on power outlets that are not on the same "Breaker". Now, if you have multiple breaker BOXES in your house - then you might run into issues, but they will still work, just at lower speeds.

IF YOUR NEIGHBOR IS A HAM RADIO OPERATOR WITH A BUNCH OF ANTENNAS IN HIS YARD - AND YOU REALLY WANT TO MAKE THEM MAD - put these all around your house - guaranteed you'll put them out of the HF business.
As a courtesy to any HF/SW/AM radio listeners or HAMS that might be near me, I ALWAYS unplug all of mine when not in use.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: Works.

Plug in and press button. Have 5 of these connected back to one acting as a "base station".

Cons: not the fastest, but i am networked together with 6 of them, at around 50-80Mbps. Still faster than my Internet link.

2 out of 5 eggsMassively Underspeed vs. what manufacturer represents

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: Works up to 65Mbps absolute maximum on same circuit 10 feet away without power strips or any other interference with a direct carrier signal - it should never be advertised as 500Mbps.

Cons: Works up to 65Mbps absolute maximum on same circuit 10 feet away without power strips or any other interference with a direct carrier signal - it should never be advertised as 500Mbps.

Other Thoughts: I am an Electrical Engineer and misrepresenting product capabilities to consumers, while all the rage at the moment, is just very petty to push products IMO.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate after 7 months of use

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: Still working beautifully after almost 8 months of use. These things just never drop the connection ever. Speed is still great, even with a garden variety older router with only fast Ethernet, and fast Ethernet switches. I'm getting 50 to 55 mbps. These would be even better with a gigabit connection, if you have traffic that could utilize that kind of speed.

Cons: Price can be a bit high if not on sale.

Other Thoughts: I used these things to wire up my kid's desktop computer which they use a lot for online gaming with steam. How nice to not have them constantly whining about the Internet connection being down as constantly happened when they were using wireless. These are top-notch high quality units. Perfect for when you need a reliable network link with minimal lag (xbox live, steam, etc., come to mind)

5 out of 5 eggsFast, Stable, and Easy Setup

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: - Very Stable connection
- Fast Transfer speeds
- Noticed no difference in speeds or stability with AES encryption enabled
- Easy to setup. Plugged both outlets in the wall, pressed the 'security' button on the side and that was it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The distance between my outlets was only a room apart ( Less than 30 feet of wiring).

5 out of 5 eggsStill Works Great After 2 Years !

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: Internet download/upload speed is just as fast on this powerline adapter as a directly connected PC located near the router.

Used in location 2 rooms away from router with no discernible lag.

HD video (1080p and 720p) streams perfectly. Also, 1080i TV streams perfectly from our cable-card TV tuner (see Other Thoughts below).

Cons: Occasional disconnects were traced to Comcast interrupting service briefly while working in neighborhood. To recover, we only needed to unplug the powerline adapter in the living room for a few seconds then plug it back in. No need to re-set both adapters.

Other Thoughts: We bought this powerline adapter kit at a local store so we could return it at no cost if it didn't work with our home electrical wiring. The house was built in 2001 and proved to be compatible with these Netgear units, no problem.

Although there's a pretty good wi-fi signal in the living room where we have our TV and Home Theater PC, reception would occasionally drop out especially if one of us was walking around the room doing stuff.

As soon as we connected one Netgear adapter to our router in the computer room and the other adapter to our HTPC in the living room reception became very stable. It's as though the HTPC is wired directly to the router, and we get fast download speeds, lag-free HDTV and are able to do HD-quality video chat on Skype with friends at the same time. Obviously, having a Gigabit-rated ethernet port on the powerline adapter to match the Gigabit-rated ports on the router pays dividends here.

Please note that not all 500Mbps-rated powerline adapters have Gigabit ports. Many are only rated as 10/100 ports so beware of that.

A word about the TV reception. It's based on a neat little tuner box from Silicondust called the HD Homerun Prime. Instead of plugging it into a computer you use a standard ethernet cable and connect it to an ethernet port on your wireless router. Then you can watch TV or record TV programs from any computer that's on your home network (using Windows Media Center on your computer). The Netgear XAVB5101 powerline adapters work well with this setup.

Also, you may wish to consider at some point upgrading your ethernet cables to CAT-6 type as they will support better results on a Gigabit-rated home network compared to standard CAT-5 or CAT-5e cables. CAT-6 cables cost a few dollars each, no big deal.

5 out of 5 eggsJust Works!

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Nano Kit (XAVB5101)

Pros: Small size, good documentation, easy to connect. Nothing to configure. Good speed overall. Given the physical limitations of my installation, this was a very good option. This order came with a Netgear gig switch, which came in handy!

Cons: Speed could be better. I'm getting about 82Mbps when the two devices are physically close to each other. About 2 rooms away, I'm getting about 60Mbps.

Other Thoughts: Easy Peasy
