2 out of 5 eggsNothing but trouble with LSI controller

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Small. Cooler than 3.5" drives.

Cons: These drives do not appear to be compatible with the most recent LSI controllers. I use 9361 controller and after adding a couple of these 1TB drives get bus reset errors and one of the drives marked as bad. I disconnected drives from LSI and ran WD diagnostic which completed without any errors. Connected drives to LSI and see errors again.

TLER is not adjustable and no information available on the value used by stock firmware.

Eventually I gave up on the idea of using these drives for raided storage and will use two drives for backup stored off-site.

Other Thoughts: I do not understand how drives can be marketed for NAS installation without testing with the most common hardware RAID controller.

I really liked 2.5" form factor as it allows to install 4 drives in 5.25" slot

Most likely these drives will work OK with software RAID.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Will, it is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Hard Drives. It is good to learn that you verify the issue is not a physical disk concern by running diagnostics on your drives. Although WD Red hard drives should work properly with most NAS enclosures, please note there are many different external bridgeboard and enclosure manufacturers, each with their own command sets, levels of compatibility, and technical requirements. Because of this, Western Digital features a list of tested NAS devices compatible with WD Red drives as a basic guide for verified compatibility and support.
To ensure full compatibility and support, we would recommend that you consider verifying the compatibility section at: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810

For hardware-based RAID or NAS enclosures larger than 5-bays, we recommend considering our Datacenter Storage line of disks. Please visit the link below for further information.

2 out of 5 eggsSadly it's failing for me.

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: After first acquiring the Red WD10JFCX late Jan. early Feb, it ran fine. Installed into a Dell Inspiron N5050, the drive took the OS install well and fast. Good drive for the price.

Cons: Sadly, I do have a con about this great HDD. The one I acquired is failing after three months of usage. Ran Defraggler, S.M.A.R.T. scan, and HDD diagnostic tools. The HDD diagnostic tool came back with the result of just over 6,000MB damaged on the drive. After running the test on it, the drive is getting slower and slower. Considered a OS re-install, but by how the drive is acting, it wouldn't do any good.

Other Thoughts: Thank you Western Digital for making such good HDDs, sadly I got a bad one. :-(

Manufacturer Response:

Hello 1armbandit, it is unfortunate that you have experienced a drive failure, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you directly.

5 out of 5 eggsRAID RAID RAID!

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: - SMALL form factor, perfect for my compact server. Perfect for setting up raid arrays.

Cons: - None!

Other Thoughts: I purchased two and set them up in RAID 1 in my server. I needed the 2.5 inch form factor because I have limited space available within my server.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine in ThinkPad X200s

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: I'm not sure whether this "NASware" thing is marketing fluff or the real deal. But in any case, this drive made a fine upgrade for the hard disk in my ThinkPad X200s. It's quiet, runs cool, and best of all, has five times the capacity of the original disk that came with this machine. I have not run any speed tests, but it seemed snappy enough doing a build of a huge software package (this is on Linux).

Cons: Does not come with a free pony, let alone rainbows or unicorns or a winning lottery number. In fact, no product I've ordered from Newegg came with any of these freebies. But one can only hope.

5 out of 5 eggsWD and NewEgg, a combo Blue Chip

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Price Point crossed with WD reputation and previous user history with NE and WD. Exact match for capacity and performance of OEM drive in new laptop.

Cons: None, exactly as expected.

Other Thoughts: I purchased two of these as my Clone/Backup process for my new laptop. Using an Apricorn (also in NewEgg) USB drive adapter these two drives are in rotation as a clone of my computer. As long as those drives aren't spinning on my shelf, my ability to swap one in and recover even my OS and biometric password cache is a mere 5 minutes and #0 screwdriver away. On my rotation schedule, I boot to the Apricorn interface, and set it to clone my internal drive to the bare external drive during my downtime, next cycle, use the other drive This greatly reduces my recovery time should I have even catastrophic drive failure (unlikely as that is on these MTBF stats) as I am cloning even the updates and installed programs.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great!

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: It works well in my Mac Mini mid 2011. Read speeds are in upwards of 100 MBps sustained. It's super quiet and cool.

Cons: None so far. I didn't buy it sooner.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems Here

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Large storage space in a small form factor. Quiet.

Throughput is comparable to "high performance" laptop drives. I did not detect an noticeable speed issues with these drives compared to 7200 rpm "high performance" laptop drives used in the same system.

Slightly lower power consumption relative to 7200 rpm "high performance" laptop drives, but still a good choice for NAS systems that are "always on".

A good choice for NAS systems that can use smaller 2.5 inch laptop drives. NAS is my "use case".

Cons: None

One trade-off is a 3 year warranty for these drives compared to a 5 year warranty for some 7200 rpm "high performance" laptop drives.

Other Thoughts: I ordered 5 drives. All 5 tested ok when they arrived. All 5 are still working a week later.

Newegg definitely did not "throw these drives in a box and ship them". Each drive was wrapped in a "air pillow pack" then contained in it's own small box. All of the small boxes were then placed in a bigger shipping box with some more cushioning. Much better packaging.
