3 out of 5 eggsSlim and light

This review is from: HGST 1TB TOURO S High-Performance Ultra-Portable Drive USB 3.0 Model 0S03729 (HTOSPA10001BDB) Silver

Pros: A very small external drive, extremely slim / small, I can fit it in my pocket.

Cons: While the drive is idle (as in no work is being performed onto/off the drive) it makes a very annoying hum / spinning sound (as if it is under load but isn't). I had to unplug it while I wasn't using it so I didn't have to listen to it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive.

This review is from: HGST 1TB TOURO S High-Performance Ultra-Portable Drive USB 3.0 Model 0S03729 (HTOSPA10001BDB) Silver

Pros: Small.
Only one cable.
7200 rpm
USB 3
HGST brand
Large capacity

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Even with todays mega 6 TB drives, this 1 TB backup drive offers lots of room for all but the most extreme users. I bought this one for a client that has a lot of photos and still only uses 40 GB. They can take a lot more photos.

HGST is rated as the most reliable HDD manufacture by many reviewers to date and by golly, I have not had a single problem with the brand.

I have not run any bench marks but coping 40 GB of photos via USB 3 seemed pretty snappy. I genuinely like this product.

2 out of 5 eggsNot what I expected

This review is from: HGST 1TB TOURO S High-Performance Ultra-Portable Drive USB 3.0 Model 0S03729 (HTOSPA10001BDB) Silver

Pros: Able to back up internal drive and back up to cloud

Cons: Will not allow copying one external drive to another external drive
Copy and paste to this drive is so slow, it is not usable
Manufacturer information is woefully inadequate

Other Thoughts: I purchased the Turo S to back up an external hard drive—big mistake. The information for the drive says it has “Preloaded local and cloud backup software” which, to me, meant I could choose what to back up and where you want it to go. Wrong. The software is restricted to only backing up what is on the internal hard drive of your desktop or laptop to this or another external hard drive or the cloud. I tried using Windows Explorer to simply copy and paste an 85GB file from another external hard drive to the Turo S. The estimated time to complete the transfer was over a day. Apparently, the software interferes with the copy and paste function in Windows 8. The information in the package or on the website is virtually nonexistent about how to use the drive beyond saying the same marketing window-dressing hype about the “wonderful” features of the drive. “Now with the ultra-portable Touro-S – available in your choice of metallic colors – you can transport and back up your files on the go.” Online, under Features for the Touro S, “ultra-portable” is repeated three times and cloud storage is repeated four times in two short paragraphs and nine bullet points. The printed instructions that come with the drive say nothing about how you must use this drive. The most informative line says, “Follow the on-screen instructions to setup (sic) your local backup and to register or sign into your Touro Cloud account. Touro Cloud Backup includes free 3GB or up to 250GB for $59/yr.” That is as close as HGST gets to giving out any useful information about how this drive is set up and the restrictions for its use. The online “Quick Start” instructions are a literal picture of the same “Quick Start Guide” that comes with the drive—no new information at all. Under Support, HGST poses a number of issues, primarily about getting the drive to operate, and then gives an answer. Under “External Drive Troubleshooting tips for Touro and Touro Pro products” this line appears: “If you are connecting to a PC, use the USB ports found on the back of the computer. Avoid using USB ports found on keyboards, monitors or the front of the PC.” The cable supplied for the Touro is about 14 inches long. Limiting the connection to the back of a desktop is backward engineering. I have my drive plugged into an Anker 7-port 3.0 Hub that is plugged into the back of my desktop. Can the Touro handle that? Who knows? I had very high expectations for this drive at 7200 rpms. It looks like it will work if you want to back up your internal hard drive to the Touro (I stopped this function mid-operation) or to their cloud service (I terminated this action, as well), but if you have any other uses in mind, such as copying and pasting to it or copying from one external hard drive to the Touro, this drive is set up to actively inhibit it.
