1 out of 5 eggsavoid this junk

This review is from: CORSAIR Flash Voyager GT 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFVYGT3B-128GB

Pros: nice storage amount, seemed speedy enough

Cons: failed after several months of being babied...had cheapo thumb drives that I've abused last for years...avoid corsair products

5 out of 5 eggsWorthy of the Corsair name

This review is from: CORSAIR Flash Voyager GT 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFVYGT3B-128GB

Pros: - Huge space
- Durable exterior
- USB 3
- Looks great
- High speeds

Cons: - Top isn't attached to the body so you can lose it, defeating the purpose of being environmentally resistant
- No lanyard/strap included

Other Thoughts: This flashdrive worked great. The speeds were essentially as advertised (230/130) and I never had any issues with it speed-wise.

I do have to wonder their logic of having it be formatted as fat32. I understand that maybe it is for compatibility issues, but for a drive of this size it would really make more sense to be at least NTFS out of the box. If you aren't sure of the difference, fat32 limits individual files to be 4GB (or so) in size. This might not impact most users of regular small flash drives, but for something of this size you are probably not getting it for text documents and you would want to put an 8 gb movie on it.

It is really big. This is great in that it gives me the impression it's super durable, but if you have anything plugged in the next usb slot this just isn't going in. I personally used it on the front ports of my system and it was fine, but for other ports I recommend using a usb 3 extension. This might have a slight impact on speed but it does really make dealing with the bulky size way easier.

The drive got a bit wet in the rain for me and didn't have any noticeable problems so it does seem to go along with the marketing materials. I really want to believe that with the cap in place you could probably throw this through the washer without issue, but since this drive is pricey I really wouldn't want to test it on purpose.

Personally, I used the drive for transferring large files between non-networked workstations for a solid month. It was great at big files and small files alike, and when copying from a solid state it was a dream. Mechanical drives are always an issue with lots of small files, but they copied large files like a dream.

I had no issues, even ignoring the "you didn't properly eject this drive" after impatiently yanking it the second the copy dialog disappeared.

Highly recommended if you have a need for a 128gb flash drive. It's like having a solid state in an external case, and that's awesome.

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost...Not Quite...Great

This review is from: CORSAIR Flash Voyager GT 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFVYGT3B-128GB

Pros: • “Cushy” outer design (could be a con) that is non-slip
• Capacity…128GB!
• Large file performance is great: 9 large files, 14.69GB transferred, 1min 56sec, 129 MB/s
• Indicator light is blue, not too bright – just right.
• Seems less delicate than other usb drives. Sturdy.
• 5 year limited warranty

Cons: • Big – Because it is wide, I cannot plug this unit and another one in next to it (horizontally aligned usb ports, typical on the front of computers and laptops).
• USB cap could be easily lost
• 117GB not 128GB free space. For a hard drive 128*1000*1000*1000=128000000000, which is 117GB…but, this is (flash) memory! Memory is sized 128*1024*1024*1024= 137438953472. Why do I feel cheated? Why do we put up with this?
• Preformatted with FAT32, which has limitations that the average user may not understand or know about.

Other Thoughts: Now that flash usb drives are a commodity, Corsair is looking to differentiate itself from the pack. The design stands out as a plus, but it’s also one of it’s downsides. The capacity is astounding, which is sure to draw many consumers. I really want to love this drive, but the bulkiness of the design is really a bummer.
• Comes pre-formatted FAT32, which has a 4GB file size limit for files. Formatting the drive to NTFS overcomes this.
• Performance tests performed with NTFS file system from an SSD drive, and the Corsair Voyager formatted with NTFS.
• Test #1: 9 large files, 14.69GB transferred, 1min 56sec, 129 MB/s
• Test #2: 115 files, 107 folders, 83.2MB transferred, 3.737sec, 22 MB/s
• Test #3: 6477 small (<10KB) files, ~9MB transferred, 2min 17.147sec, 67KB/s
• Test #4: 1 large file, 57.67GB transferred, 11min 27.491sec, 86 MB/s

5 out of 5 eggsFast Flash Drive

This review is from: CORSAIR Flash Voyager GT 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFVYGT3B-128GB

Pros: +Very fast read speeds on USB 3.0, and good write speeds also.

+Nice rubber coating that feels good and should offer good protection against drops. It also has a nice color design on it.

+5 year warranty

Cons: -The rubber tends to collect dust on it.

-Thicker than other flash drives that have no shock protection on them. Its only a slight negative due to the fact it hasn’t been a problem for me on my desktop which has plenty of USB 3.0 ports.

-The cap does not attach on the end of it, so when you use the flash drive you will have to save the cap somewhere that you won’t lose it.

Other Thoughts: Overall I am very happy with this flash drive. This is my first portable flash drive getting these kinds of speeds, which is great. It came formatted in FAT32 and I ended up changing it to NTFS because I have some larger files to put on it. NTFS slowed the seq write speeds (109 MB/s) doing that though, but using exFAT in Windows 8.1 I was able to get the seq write speed up to 145 MB/s in the CrystalDiskMark benchmark.

My benchmarks were taken on my Desktop computer, which has a MSI Z97 Gaming 7 Motherboard, with an Intel i7-4771 cpu.

Below are the speeds I recorded using CrystalDiskMark using FAT32

Seq READ: 234 MB/s
Seq WRITE: 162 MB/s

512K READ: 171 MB/s
512K WRITE: 29 MB/s

4K READ: 4.129 MB/s
4K WRITE: 0.768 MB/s

4KQD32 READ: 5.026 MB/s
4KQD32 WRITE: 0.813MB/s

When I also benchmarked it on my USB 2.0 port, it maxed with a seq read/write speed around 43 MB/s (for large files).

I have no way of testing how long this flash drive will last, but at least it comes with a 5 year warranty and shouldn’t cost all that much to mail if I had to. I guess it depends on where you would have to send it. There is a little paper inside it that says Taiwan, which would not be good. Although I have had good support from Corsair in the past.

Another reviewer did mention trouble in the past with a previous model, I do recall reading something about that also. I have to believe they trust their product when they put a 5 year warranty on it. I do always keep copies on different devices of everything important anyways.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

This review is from: CORSAIR Flash Voyager GT 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFVYGT3B-128GB

Pros: My favorite thing about this drive is the speed. Reading a single large file was about 200 MB/s, great speed for a flash drive. The writing for a single large file was about 130 MB/s but varied a bit. When it came to small files or random reads/writes, it became slightly slower, but still very good.

The rubber casing feels sturdy and can take a drop or being thrown in a backpack without worry of damaging it.

Cons: There are some set-backs to the drive, none are critical but are worth mentioning.

Under the rubber encasing, the circuit board is protected by a very cheap plastic housing. This means that it is still susceptible to being crushed or pinched. Ideally, the drive would have had a metal shell instead of plastic, but this is not the case.

Drive comes formatted with the FAT32 file system. This means that fresh from the box, it will not be able to store a single file that is more than 4GB. The reason might be for compatibility with MAC/Linux but should be kept in mind. It is possible to format the drive to NTFS (windows) or also to a Linux friendly file system.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a great flash drive. I can see it as being a very useful tool for system administrators. You can store disk images and all sorts of install programs on this without worry about room and it will load up faster than an optical disk drive.

Additionally, media enthusiasts can store whole movies and tv shows and transfer them fast and without issue.

A warning: A flash drive of any make and model can be lost, stolen, damaged or otherwise render your data un-reachable. Always make copies of data that is irreplaceable (photos, videos, documents etc.)

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad

This review is from: CORSAIR Flash Voyager GT 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFVYGT3B-128GB

Pros: Pretty close to advertised read/write speeds. I'm seeing around 200MB/s read and 110MB/s write on Windows 8.1 on a Z68 board.
Price is not too bad vs. competitors offerings. 5 year warranty.

Cons: Bulky. No cap loss protection.

The prior model CMFVYGT3A-128GB appears to have an extremely high failure rate which may carry over to this model, so I'm a little nervous about trusting it for anything important that isn't backed up elsewhere.
