5 out of 5 eggsNo problems after 2 years

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT256M550SSD3 mSATA 256GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I have one of these mSATAs in both my Alienware M18X R2 laptops. I have been running them for two years, and I have had zero problems. I use it for my C drive, and my OS is smokin' fast.

I reinstall Windows 7 a lot, and this mSATA has held up perfectly through a great deal of reformatting and data read/write cycles.

100% reliability in two laptops over 2 years!

Cons: Only 256GB of storage. I am switching to a 1TB mSATA for the extra storage. The 1TB mSATA costs $459. This mSATA will be converted to a very fast external storage drive.

Other Thoughts: I am just really impressed with the reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsFast SSD in Small Package!

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT256M550SSD3 mSATA 256GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Full Retail Package, screws included (many doesn't include screws).

Fast SSD, boots Windows 8 in seconds, Fast at everything I do. Easy to install, provided access to port is quick. No cables needed, not causing any clutter.

Using the benchmarking tool of a major brand SSD, this mSATA SSD actually edged out a new Pro brand of that drive installed the day before, in all but random writes. It was close in the other categories, but still the M550 was the winner. That's amazing in itself.

Cons: Will likely run warmer in PC's when installed under GPU. This isn't the fault of Newegg or Crucial, but it needs to be known, if this is going to be the case. How much that will affect longevity of the SSD will be determined.

However, it's well known that "Heat is the bane of electronics". Something to keep in mind. Speccy reports this drive's temps at 39C as I'm typing this post, my other 2.5" SSD is running at 29C. Yes, that's a difference.

In tight areas, it's best to place the screws in the holes before carefully placing in computer, then thread each a few turns to ensure that both are secured. Not really a con, but it's more noticed here. It's often hard to get screws in these tight spots after installing the drive.

Other Thoughts: This was a compromise purchase, wanted a PCIe SSD, but only had one PCIe slot & my GPU was using that. There was what appeared to be a x4 slot on MB, but actually that was in size only, it was a x1. So I was left with the alternative choice.

Being there was a mSATA port on my Dell XPS 8700 & I had a bit of extra cash to spend, decided to try it. By the time the 3 year warranty is up, something better & faster will be out anyway. Never fails.

Some would say that this is better for a notebook, but keep in mind that temps in these are higher than a PC in many instances. It will be more important than ever to regularly clean the notebook good after install.

I spoke of the 10C difference in temps in "Cons", will purchase an additional fan to address the issue. Both the GPU & this SSD will likely benefit from an extra fan.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase, it's faster than a very popular 2.5" SSD of it's same range in GB's.

5 out of 5 eggsmSATA SSD

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT256M550SSD3 mSATA 256GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The mSATA SSD does exactly what is expected. Moving to SSD, and particularly a PCIe-mounted mSATA may be the best "bank for the buck" performance dollar you can spend.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsBlazing fast

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT256M550SSD3 mSATA 256GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Originally bought this as a replacement for an existing mSATA drive that was thought to be failing in a client notebook. It turns out it wasn't, leaving me with the choice of either returning it or using it myself. I chose the latter. We installed this in a Dell Precision Workstation T1700 desktop PC, using an Addonics 4-port RAID mSATA to PCIe x4 adapter. It's set up as our primary boot drive running Windows 8.1.

Boot times are like nothing I've ever seen. We see only a flash of the Windows logo (maybe 1 second), and then the desktop appears faster than our monitor can switch modes to show it. Programs load near-instantly--at least as fast as if they were already cached in RAM. With two less (RAID) hard drives spinning, the machine is now whisper silent.

I'm floored at how fast this PC is now, simply making the one single change to move the OS to this mSATA drive.

Cons: As with any SSD product, you will pay a higher price-per-Gig when comparing them to conventional hard drives. This is only really a "con" when comparing to cheap mechanical drives.

Other Thoughts: Moving to SSD, and particularly a PCIe-mounted mSATA such as the Crucial M550 may be the best "bank for the buck" performance dollar you can spend.
