5 out of 5 eggsDid Some Testing

Pros: Makes a Difference.

Cons: With slower microSD cards, difference may be slim to none.

Other Thoughts: I tested this device with a SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card, newegg #9SIA12K0K69872.

I used a Dell XPS M1530 laptop with SSD hard drive and an ExpressCard USB 3.0 adapter (newegg #9SIA24P13U3863). I moved a 1.6GB GoPro video file from the laptop to the microSD card and back using both USB 2.0 and USB3.0.

On USB 2.0:
Write speed: 8.2MB/sec
Read speed: 33.0MB/sec

On USB 3.0:
Write speed: 8.5MB/sec
Read speed: 39.0 MB/sec

This particular microSD card's specs on the SanDisk site give a 30MB/sec read speed and unspecified slower read speed. Clearly the SD card is doing its job just fine but it is the primary limiting factor in these transfer speeds.

USB 2.0 is capable of 35 MB/s transfers (wikipedia).

Consequently, in this particular case there's little advantage to the 3.0 interface, though the numbers show it did measurably improve transfer rates.

However, faster microSD cards exist. The best of the SanDisk cards specify a read speed of 80MB/s and write speed of 30MB/s.

In conclusion, IF you are using high-speed microSD cards, this device appears likely to confer a big advantage. If not, you may as well use a USB 2.0 card reader.

Given the price of this widget, however... why not?

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: I bought this specifically to use with the 64GB micro SD cards I use in my GoPro. It allows much faster offload of the data than the camera itself. Just simply does the job at a decent price.

Cons: Cheaply made case. Doesn't lock firmly in the "out" position, making it difficult to seat in a tight USB port. Doesn't look very rugged. I'll definitely carry it in a little ziplock bag when out in the field or on water.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tested its speed. But it's obviously much faster to access the SD card data in this device than a USB 2.0 card reader or via the camera's own USB connection.
