5 out of 5 eggsGreat Flash Drive, Read other reviews with caution

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: This drive is FAST, yes the 64GB would be almost twice as fast, but the 32 can hit speeds up to and over 100mb/s for write. Thats good enough for me.

Cons: Build quality is not that great, but I will make that sacrifice for how fast it is. Only flash drive I ever had with great build quality was a silicone power one, but it was slow as a turtle. I will take the speed and just be careful not to drop it from my roof. The other Con is the fact that its a retractable drive, I hate them, but once again I bought this soley for speed. I knew that it was retractable before I purchased it, so I can't dock them points for something I clearly knew before I bought it. (sorry personal pet peeve, I have seen people dock stars for items that were clearly in the description)

Other Thoughts: Some people do not have a high tech level and may read reviews claiming that this will not hit desired speeds. Think to yourself... what system was he on? Cpu? ram? etc... I even saw one where they were using a adapter (this just adds another layer)

On my system this Hit if not EXCEEDED all manufacturer specs (keep in mind specs for 32gb, NOT 64gb). Write speed , the only one I care about, hit 118MB/s formated in exfat.

My setup:
4790k devils canyon cpu
Asrock extreme 6 z97 mobo
850 samsung pro SSD
3Tb Seagate HDD
32gb 2133 cas 9 ram
twin frozer 7950 gpu
750w psu
evo212 cpu cooler

Obviously my results would be much slower if I was using a Amiga from 1985. I just wanted to post this for some people on newegg who might not have super high tech level and warn them that you need to really read reviews about products like this with a grain of salt, as some peoples setups may not be able to handle the higher transfer speeds, not the flash drives fault.
using designated 3.0 port, not adapter.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: Fast. This thing reads at 200MBs and writes at 100+MBs. That's what I've been looking for. Most USB 3.0 flash drives read/write at about 20/10. That's not even a really good USB 2.0 drive. If it lasts a year, it's well worth the thirty bucks I paid for it.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for Windows to Go.

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: Uses an SSD Controller. You can make this a boot-able Windows 8.1 flash drive that will boot on any computer. Other boot-able Flash drives would cost 3 times as much and not as fast.

Cons: Bought it on sale and hard to find at the sale price

4 out of 5 eggsSolid choice for speed

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: Very fast drive, it effectively saturates USB 2.0 ports and on a proper USB 3.0 port there is a nice speed bump there if your system can handle it.
I highly recommend formatting it in ExFat instead of the FAT format it comes in especially since this is a relatively high capacity drive, and files above 4 GB require the ExFAT format.

Also it doesn't have any weird flash issues as far as I can tell. The lexar drive I had before would always start ejecting itself when attempting to transfer a large file. This one doesn't do that (which is always a plus...)

Cons: It is a bit big for a flash drive by modern standards, although given it's performance this is mostly forgivable. However, I felt I still had to take an egg off since for Mac laptop users, it does preclude you from using your second USB port...

Not a big fan of retractable flash drives, but this is mostly a matter of personal preference.

Other Thoughts: - The activity LED is relatively dim which can be a good or bad thing.
- The slider is spring loaded which is fun to play with.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Build Quality

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: High speed. Hit up to 198 MB/s read and 106 MB/s write with CrystalMark. 10/10 speeds.

Cons: Build quality is bad. I have owned this USB for less than a month and a part inside already broke. I had dropped it a few times from a reasonable desk height, until it finally broke last night. I could hear the little part that came out as I shook the USB.

A few things happened, mainly with the locking mechanism.
1. The USB once extended could be pushed back since the locking mechanism broke
2. The USB could NOT extend, getting stuck halfway.
3. USB functioned normally.

Other Thoughts: So sure this USB is lightning fast, but what good is it when you're unable to use consistently after a few drops?

4 out of 5 eggs136MB Read - 90MB Write

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: Great Writing speed. Had windows XP booted up in vmware under 15 seconds as oppose to 22 seconds on the HDD even with short stroking.

Firmware v3 of this device was recognized as a removable drive, unlike the previous version.

When the usb pops out, it makes a clear crisp clicking sound that reminds me of an old Swiss automatic knife. *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK*

Cons: Initially, I thought I had purchased the Rolls-Royce of flash drives. The reading speed was no where near as advertised. I was expecting reading speed to be close to 170MB. But 136MB is disappointing. However the writing speed blew me away.

3 out of 5 eggsFast but Fixed Disk

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: Very fast drive that is a bargain when at sale price.

Cons: I was hoping the drive would identify as removable. A January 2014 post on the Sandisk forum stated that Sandisk changed back to producing flash drives as removable. I thought that I would likely receive a removable drive so I was disappointed.

Other Thoughts: I considered sending the drive back but decided to keep it.

3 out of 5 eggswindows 7 problem

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: I didn't buy it.

Cons: I take this from their forum, reading this made the decision easy:
"Have you considered writing to Microsoft and asking them to patch their Windows 7"

If you purchase this for a windows 7 pc, you do run some risks...

5 out of 5 eggsSandisk Extreme USB 3 flash drive

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: By far the fastest USB flash drive available in early 2014 for efficiently moving entire directories of numerous files totaling several GB to/from various computers that cannot be networked.
Writing small to medium sized files to this drive via USB3 is over 20x faster than typical USB2 drives. For example, 1 GB of small to medium sized files takes about 10 seconds, versus a typical range of 200 to 1200 seconds for most USB2 drives. It is 5x faster for writing and reading large files.
Over USB2, it is 5x faster for writes and 2x faster for reads than USB2 drives.

Cons: Bigger than most and so crowds in vertically stacked USB ports

5 out of 5 eggsFurther (and final) Thoughts

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-032G-A46

Pros: See: Other Thoughts

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Odd. Everything I said in my previous post was correct.

However, I decided to reformat the drive again and afterwards all of the S.M.A.R.T. data came up showing 100% (as new) with no retired blocks.

Additionally, the data that was previously showing the new replacement drive had only 95% life left is now showing it has 100%.

Finally, the drive now benchmarks to factory specs and no longer outperforms them.

SanDisk has informed me that they only replace defective drives with new ones -- so I am at a loss to explain the original S.M.A.R.T. data and significantly better-than-spec benchmarks (which I ran/confirmed several times), but it seems that after reformatting the drive (twice) everything is normal.

This is a strange anomaly, but SanDisk has been very accommodating so I felt I should give them the benefit of the doubt.

So as of now -- no complaints.
