5 out of 5 eggsGreat Linux Support

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Kingston had good Linux support. One of the few manufactures that says so on the package.

I haven't had any issues with their thumb drives, including this one. Works great for what I use it for.

Cons: It might be a little on the slow side but I haven't compared it to other thumb drives. If I cared about the speed, I would have gotten a higher end model anyway.

The transfers seem to run very fast at first but slow done right at the end. I guess something like the data is written to buffer and then written to the flash is going on. Just something to keep in mind if you see a large amount of data transfer quickly and then it takes a while to continue.

Other Thoughts: I usually copy a few files that are a couple of gigabytes in size. It probably takes a minute or two. If you need a faster thumb drive, get one of the higher-end models.

1 out of 5 eggsNot USB 3.0 speed

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: You won't lose the cap

Cons: VERY SLOW. Whatever "USB 3.0 Complliant" means, it is certainly not referring to transfer rate (more likely the electrical implementation, which is irrelevant to the user). I get a write speed of 22MB/s, which would be considered slow for even a USB 2.0 device. Read/write speeds are not given in the specs or on the packaging. This is, simply put, a rip off.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer some clarification. The DT100G3 is an entry level USB 3.0 device that offers a 40MB/s read, 10MB/s write speed some drives may out perform this specification as you indicated. We do have performance USB 3.0 drives like out DTHX30 which offers 225MB/s read, 135MB/s write in USB 3.0 and is capped at 30MB/s read/write in USB 2.0 ports. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

1 out of 5 eggscorrupted

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: large size

Cons: When I received the item and used it for the first time it showed lower then cappacity storage space. I didn't think anything of it until i used it again several months later and it scrambled and destroyed anything that was saved on it. Attempted repair / reformat several times before throwing it away as it was far outside the RMA period. which i had played with it more when I first purchased it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. Our DT100G3 is covered by a five year warranty. If you are still able to get a hold of the drive, we can work with you on a warranty replacement. 5 out of 5 eggsGood product.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Works great. Hasn't corrupted a file on transfer yet.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: I was skeptical on the idea that there was no actual lid, but now I realize it's pretty convenient.

Also, this was no reason to dock a egg, but I could have skipped 3.0 and went for a 2.0 that was twice the size (32GB) for just a few more bucks. I honestly don't need the speed. I wasn't thinking about that at the time.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Aesthetic.

Cons: Broke in under a month. Won't even be recognized by a single computer in my house.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: The enclosure seems to be well-made. Has a hole for a lanyard, which attaches to the drive itself instead of the cover (so even if it does fall apart some day, your data is still there).

Fast. I'm using it with USB 2.0, and I get consistent 19MBPS writes for MP3s. Reads seem to be around 30MBPS, which is most likely just a limitation of USB 2.0 rather than of this particular hardware.

Cons: No status LED.

Other Thoughts: So many people complain about low speeds on this device.

Perhaps they are just using very small files, but that's not the device's fault: FAT32 is not very good at handling small files. It never has been, and it never can be. All FAT32-formatted devices slow way down, in terms of megabytes-per-second, when handling small files.

Formatting the device as NTFS may improve write speeds when lots of small files are being transferred, but would severely limits compatibility with non-Windows computers.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Nice design, no cap to loose, includes a place where you could loop a strap through to connect it to a lanyard or similar. Hasn't died yet.

Cons: Arrived with a small scratch on it. Given the packaging, it likely happened at the factory. Hardly noticeable though, and given enough use it will blend in with the other scratches I'll accumulate.

Other Thoughts: I can't comment on speed since I don't have a USB 3.0 computer at the moment, but it works fast enough for me on 2.0.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Dork Stick

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: It is usb3 fast.
Cheap on sale :).

Cons: I wish they had something to cover the usb port apon closing the unit vs leaving the port exposed.

I have a nice carry bag for my dork sticks but not every1 does.

Other Thoughts: Overall the unit is solid, fast, and a value.
