2 out of 5 eggsNice design, does not deliver on USB 3.0 speeds

Pros: Nice design allows for use with 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives. Includes power adapter and USB 3.0 cable.

Cons: This device has not been able to deliver the expected USB 3.0 speeds using the supplied cable. I suspect that it houses a USB 2.0 controller with a USB 3.0 plug.

4 out of 5 eggsSlick design, but no S.M.A.R.T

Pros: The best mechanical design I've seen for a dock. A huge plus is that the electronics are not exposed while the drive is powered up.

Cons: It appears that S.M.A.R.T is not implemented.

Other Thoughts: So far I've only tried this with USB 2.0.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's Great

Pros: I like that it keeps drives horizontal. Ejection method just slides drive back about 1/2" so you can lift it out. 2.5" drives accomodated by a small fold-down rail.

Seems fast enough. I had 70-90MB/s transfer rates from a 7.2K laptop drive thru a USB 3.0 expresscard adapter to this unit, which had an old SATA I drive in it. I can't think of many more ways to hobble this unit; that's plenty working against it for good speeds, and it still comes thru. If I try it with a SATA II drive I will re-post results.

Driver recognized right away, as well.

Cons: I would not advise this for someone wanting thousands upon thousands of load/eject cycles, but I would think for the average hobbyist it would be great.

It is plastic, as disclosed in the ads, so banging it around all day may not be the best for it.

It won't auto-power-down drive, so you must power down before adding/removing drive. Not really a con, just something to remember.

Other Thoughts: I don't like vertical docks to drop drives into, since all mine were formatted horizontally. Maybe that does not matter anymore, but there used to be some concern about that.

All told, with a 3.5" drive in it it's like holding a large paperback book. It also "feels" more stable horizontally than with vertical or side-mounted enclosures that sit on pedestals.

Nice that it comes with 12V adaptor, 3.0 cable, and on/off switch.

Instruction sheet is more than adequate, and reminds you to power down before adding/removing drives.
