A Boatswain's pipe is actually a whistle that is made of a tube, called a gun, that directs air over a small sphere, called a buoy, with a hole cut on top(keep in mind that the pitch is not fully adjustable on these). The pitch of the boatswains whistle is controlled by placing one's hand over the hole while blowing. It is historically used to give commands by an officer on a ship.
