New & Improved 2012 MagicJack Plus

Technical Details
Product Description
The magicJack Plus is another groundbreaking release brought to us by Vocaltec (formerly known as Ymax). In regards to its basic functions it is exactly the same as the original magic Jack. It works via VoIP and comes with unlimited local and long distance calling. Like its predecessor it can also be taken anywhere that you can access your computer and can be used to make calls from anywhere in the world back to the United States and Canada. Despite its seeming similarities there are several striking differences that make the magicJack plus a much better version of its younger sibling.

plug and play at its finest
All you have to do is hook it up to your computer to register an account and phone number and then into your telephone via the RJ-11 phone jack port
you are ready to go all within 30 seconds

1 out of 5 eggsBetter options out there....

Pros: 911 and other decent features

Cons: Unreliable hardware, terrible customer service

Other Thoughts: I purchased a Magic Jack Plus direct from their website. After I connected everything up (through my router), I could make a call and all seemed well. After about 5 minutes into the first call the connection seemed to drop. Follow up test calls confirmed I was getting a 1-way connection and upon hanging up I had no dial-tone from the Magic Jack. It would sometimes recover on its own OR by power reset.
All of this I can deal with as I understand issues do occur, so I contacted their live support. I was disconnected several times or sometimes just put into a waiting queue and left there. During each of those attempts to resolve my issue I was walked through numerous meaningless troubleshooting steps (reconnecting my Magic Jack to a different USB port on my PC, reinstalling the software, etc.). One of the representatives actually instructed me to power reset my broadband and router to “clear the connection” WHILE WE WERE USING INTERNET CHAT. Another asked me if I was using the USB dongle to connect the Magic Jack to my router, which I know is feasible depending on your router but I’m sure that’s not what he was asking.
I’m a network engineer by profession and although VoIP services are not my specialty I’m knowledgeable in how they work and basic troubleshooting steps. My assessment of their support structure…..incompetent. After, hours in chat I was basically disconnected without warning at the end of their published support hours (11:00 PM EST).
Magic Jack may be a fine product and I just got a dud, but there are better, cheaper options out there if you want to be left on your own to figure things out. The support experience alone was enough to turn me off. In a way I’m glad I had the issue so I learned about it up front and within my 30 day return period, rather than 6 months down the road.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage!

Pros: Cheap

Cons: The bloody thing works when it wants to and when it does work the call quality is garbage.

Other Thoughts: Look elsewhere for VOIP solutions. This will leave you frustrated and unsatisfied.

1 out of 5 eggsplus bad, original good

Pros: The original magic jack is VERY worth it the plus not so much, u can make a call out with this one

Cons: on the Plus version the cons go on and on i do reviews for a living but instead of typing out 5 pages of multiple reviews ill say this get the original magic jack and u WILL be happy if your not then ur using it wrong because i have used the original for now going on 4 years still no issues.

Other Thoughts: as for the calls being cut short ive never personaly had that happen so i dont know what these other reviewers are talking about, but i do know this if your internet dies and resets itself it cleared all my data off my magic jack plus, yet on the original nothing changed thats why i say by far get the original and be happy for life.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

Pros: Easy setup. Works without being connected to a computer. Very inexpensive service. I can't tell the difference in audio quality between this and my traditional land line. Works with my Uniden cordless phones. I was able to get a prefix for my home town!

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I have to dial ten digit numbers for all calls, even within the same prefix area.

It sounds like most of the negative reviews are not reviewing this "plus" model, but the original model.

I bought mine from a local retail. I could have saved five bucks and some tax if I had bought from Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsMagic Jack

Pros: Provided somewhat reasonable long distance service but lenght of time for a call was limited. Had to redial often to continue longer calls. "Unlimited use" advertised for a reasonable rate.

Cons: Magic Jack took my money and ran away. I had it for a year and when the renewal time came, I renewed for another year of "unlimited" use. Then my account was "suspended for review". Very very very poor customer service and it came apparant that MJ was not going to renew my account. The reason? It appears that "unlimited use" does not mean unlimited use at all. It means that MJ will determine if they are making money from you or not whether you will get unlimited use. Plainly stated, Magic Jack is a rip off. Stay away - far away

Other Thoughts: Run away - fast and don't ever consider using this.

2 out of 5 eggsBe Warned...

Pros: Cheap! It seems to work fine once you get it working.

Cons: There is NO SUPPORT from this company! When your purchase involves ongoing payments to a company this is a very bad thing...

Should something go wrong, you are left paying for new equipment.

Software/Website is a huge pain.

NOTE: These must be plugged into the MOTHERBOARD USB slots! Hubs and front panel USB ports don't work. No clue why...

I bought six of these for six locations that needed cheap - rarely used phone service. After trying over and over again to get the software to recognize the thing it finally connected and started working. Score!

Went to the next place and connected that one.
(continued)

Other Thoughts: On the third place, however, problems started - and this is why I now HATE this company. It would complete the activation process but nothing would happen. So I tried another... and another.. I called their "support" number and they said they ONLY handle payments and I'd need to use the tech support chat on the website. "Tech Support" said my account was "under review" for "too many activations" WHAT?!

Long story short, after repeated chats (YOU CANNOT TALK TO A HUMAN EVER!) they still said there was nothing they could do and since the serial numbers were associated with my CC# I couldn't use them.

In the end I had to purchase my own "replacements" to get clean serial numbers. They flat out refused to sort out their own incompetence. Just took my money and ran.

4 out of 5 eggsImportant Info!

Pros: Important Info: Magic Jack can not handle any type of usb hub because of its emulation driver... Most modern motherboards come with some type of usb hub configuration in that back of the motherboard where everything plugs in...

Plug your Magic Jack, in to one of those on board ports, the ones that usually connect to the front of the computer case.

Win 7 64 bit...

Cons: Read Pros^^

1 out of 5 eggsWorks great, Service none

Pros: Magic Jack Plus works great. It fixes problems from original Magic Jack.

Cons: My original Magic Jack Plus was sent to the wrong address. Customer service is handled by on-line Chat only. Could not get the jack reshipped after many attempts so I cancelled and ordered using another channel. Only way to get my money back was to appeal to credit card. My account with Magic Jack was then frozen. I could not get resolved with Magic Jack after many attempts. They said it would be resolved soon but after 6 months, they put a recording on my line saying my ported number had expired and I needed to renew. I could not because my account was frozen. They said it would be fixed soon. I could receive calls but could not call out because the recording would come on the line. After 3 weeks and nothing, I had no choice but to port my number to another carrier. Magic Jack then sent me an email saying it would cost $30 to port my number back! I have been hijacked.

Other Thoughts: Not worth the trouble.
