1 out of 5 eggsAlmost works

Pros: features for price when on sale

Cons: locks up too much

Other Thoughts: Small office with less than 10 users.
Worked fine for a week or so then needed to be rebooted once every day or 2.
Plugged it into a timer so it would reboot once a night, again it worked for a week or two and again started to need rebooting once a day.
Few days later it keeps locking up every couple of minutes.
I liked the VPN feature and might take it home, maybe it'll work ok with less users connected to it.

4 out of 5 eggsAs advertised

Pros: Good feature set. Great wireless signal, VPN, guest account, lots of options.

For the reviewer above that faults the VFG6005n for not having the option to assign fixed ip addresses via DHCP. This is completely false.

Go to the SECURITY menu and then > MAC Access Control

Enable MAC Access Control set a Default MAC Access Control Action of ALLOW. Add a new device, enter in the MAC address of the device you want to assign fixed ip address and then define the ip address you want.

Optionally, you set the Default MAC Access Control Action to DENY, and then allow or deny access by MAC address to all of the devices on your network.

Cons: I cannot find an option to deny access to router configuration via a wireless connection - a good security feature.

I would like to set the router to re-boot itself on a set schedule as I could do with Tomato or DD-WRT.

Other Thoughts: Web based configuration is well organized.
Got this for under $50 - a virtual steal...

5 out of 5 eggsPretty good, minor problem

Pros: Easy to setup, just plugged in the cables, and the wired network was up. Then browsed to 192.168.10.1, logged into the web interface, and set up the wireless portion. Took me a total of 2 minute, may be less. It has been working solid for a week. The web GUI has usage graphs which is interesting.

Cons: I could not remote into one windows 7 box from another on my home network. File sharing was fine, but when trying to ping any box on the network, I get the same weird IP address back. I fiddled around for a while, but couldn't find the cause, eventually I set the router to use "custom DNS" from google, which is 8.8.8.8, and everything worked again. Not sure what was wrong, and I do have the latest v2.07 firmware.

Other Thoughts: The router can set up a guest wireless network that's isolated from the main network, and can use a 3G USB dongle as a failover network in case your ISP is down. Didn't try these features, but looked easy to setup.

Saw the VPN setup screens in the web GUI, looked fairly easy to use, but I didn't have a need for it yet.

2 out of 5 eggsOver priced wireless router

Pros: It works and it has VPN capability.

Cons: Firewall feature is not much better than the standard wireless router. VPN is a little difficult to get to work. Router is not reliable. Has to be restarted to get to work when it stops working.

Other Thoughts: If you need a firewall this router is not much better than a standard router. The only thing that makes this router worth it is the VPN appliance feature.

2 out of 5 eggsNo DHCP Reservations

Pros: Pretty much as advertised

Cons: I was very disappointed that the DHCP on this router does not allow you to reserve IP addresses so the devices on the network will always get the same address.

2 out of 5 eggsUgh. Never again.

Pros: Does work as a VPN box. Probably OK for simple setups.

Cons: Buggy, poorly documented and the setup pages are just awkward.

Other Thoughts: Have one of these in a small office setting after previous router died. Setting this up has been a pain, and the network still has some failures in handling assigned IPs - or the documentation is so poor that it has baffled a couple of experienced IT guys (and this includes googling for hints).

5 out of 5 eggsMore features then most others

Pros: I'm giving this router 5 eggs because of all the things it does, it's not the best at all of them. For a new product, it's good at being a VPN router and so far has been very stable.

Not mentioned in the Newegg description, but this router is also a PPTP VPN server.

The router generates almost no heat (much less the the Netgear routers it replaced). PPTP VPN is well implimented (both VPN types can be used simultaneously) and it has nice reserve bandwidth management. All in all it's been a good router for the price. My one call for support on the IPSEC configuration was answered very fast and firmware issues were or are being addressed.

Cons: FQDN identity in the IPSEC implementation only allows 15 characters maximum, there aren't many second or third level FQDNs that will fit, Zyxel told me that this issue will be fixed in one of the next firmwares.
The backup Cellular WAN doesn't work, they said it will be fixed in the next firmware update.
The WiFi doesn't indicate what MACs are connected or signal strength.

Other Thoughts: I bought a couple of these routers when they were a shell shocker thinking I might be able to replace my remote IPSEC Netgear FVS114 routers that crash continually requiring a lot of driving to reboot, bonus if the 3G/4G backup WAN worked with my phone. It took me several hours (see the FQDN issue above) and a firmware update to bring up the IPSEC with a centralized Netgear FVS336G, but it did finally come up and so far has been very stable.

2 out of 5 eggsVery basic

Pros: Very easy to set up.

Cons: The router is easily overwhelmed when copying files over the network. Drops periodically. Do to New Eggs return policy, I will not buy router again from here.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes you don't what you are getting until you set it up and have it all running. Its best to get something you know you can return.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Workmanship

Pros: 1. Decent Throughput.
2. Good Price for features available.

Cons: Poor quality plastic used. Antenna is very fragile. I received one of the two broken and I am in process of RMA.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh throughput SPI firewall/router

Pros: Easy setup. Great throughput. Good range on the wireless AP. Tough to find a good firewall that has the throughput for the upper tiers of high speed internet, so far this fits the bill perfectly.

Cons: admin page should be https. Sometimes when administering the device its web page will hang.
